If you are interested in polar exploration, you must have heard of Roald Amundsen, the first explorer to reach the South Pole.
Born on July 16, 1872 in Norway, Roald grew up with his other three older brothers. His father, a businessman in the shipping industry, died when he was just 14. The teen had dreamed of becoming an explorer. He followed his mother’s wish to become a doctor until she died when he was 21. Then Roald left school to go after his dream of exploring
His adventure on a Belgian research ship in 1896 was his first real polar exploration. When the ship got stuck in ice, the people on board were forced to spend winter in terrible conditions. But Roald used his skills to find fresh food, and showed himself to be a capable explorer. This was perhaps one of the or most important experiences that would lead him to become an Arctic(北极的) explorer.
Roald had planned to be the first man to reach and explore the North pole. However, hearing that Robert Peary had already reached there, Roald changed the plan and decided to go to the South Pole. In January, 1911, Roald’s ship arrived at the Bay of Whales in Antarctica. His team set up camp there and prepared for the trip to the South Pole. The team set out to reach the South pole months later. At first, they travelled quickly, but soon they had to pass over mountains and avoid dangerous places. Walking in the hutongs of Beijing, you’ll see a yard enclosed(环绕) by a group of houses and walls on the four sides. ___▲___ “Si” means east, west, south and north and “he” shows the traditional values of Chinese families.
The big gate was painted red, because red is the symbol of luck and happiness. Behind the gate, a large screen wall would stand. In the centre of the Siheyuan, the courtyard was planted with trees and flowers, with two stony paths leading to the houses on each side.
The whole building usually faces south, with a main room on the northern side, an opposite room in the south, and eastern and western wings(厢房) on each side. The old usually live in the main room which has good lighting and temperature all year round, while the young would live in other wings.
Today, influenced by social changes, most houses have been taken down while the others that remain till these days are mostly improved to make them fit for today’s modern living. This makes Siheyuan a valuable memory of the old Beijing City.
Luckily, architects(建筑师) have been trying to achieve a perfect mix of the modern and the traditional culture. For example, the places where athletes stayed during the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing were designed in the shape of Siheyuan.
Siheyuan’s symmetry(对称的) design and shared spaces show the values deep in Chinese people’s hearts, such as belief in balance, the importance of family and respect for older people. No matter how society has changed, Siheyuan is always seen as a symbol of China’s rich culture. When you come to Beijing, do visit a Siheyuan to feel the heart of Beijing’s culture!
