Learning a skill like painting and kung fu in ancient China began with a disciple ceremony (拜师礼).
First, the student’s family would visit the teacher politely. They would talk about the
student’s good character and love for learning, and promise the student would follow the teacher’s rules. Only after the teacher agreed would they prepare shu xiu, a traditional teacher’s gift. It
included celery, lotus seeds, red dates, red beans, dried meat and longans.
On the ceremony day, the place was tidy, with a table for the teacher and a memorial tablet (纪念牌位) of the teacher’s own teacher. The student wore clean clothes, got down on his knees, and performed the kowtow ceremony. The student held the gift with both hands, bowed down
until his forehead touched the ground, and stayed in that position for a few seconds before getting up. This action was repeated three times: the first was for knowledge, the second for guidance, and

the third for care. Then, the student offered a cup of warm tea with both hands above the head.
After the teacher drank the tea, the student became a disciple and might get a small return gift like a brush or a tool.
After that, the student often lived with the teacher’s family, doing chores first before practicing skills.

Many teenagers close their books or give up easily when they meet difficulties again and
again. They easily believe that their efforts are useless and finally stop challenging themselves.
This common but harmful state (状态) of mind—giving up because of repeated failures—is called learned helplessness.
The idea was first proved by Seligman, a famous American psychologist (心理学家), in his dog experiment in the 1960s.
He put some dogs in a closed box with no way out. Then he gave them small electric
shocks (电击) that the dogs could not avoid. Try as they might, the dogs could not run away or
stop the pain. Later, Seligman opened a clear door in the box—the dogs could easily escape if they wanted. But surprisingly, they just lay there and gave up trying at all.
The experiment showed that repeated failure could make living things lose the courage to try, whether animals or humans.
Such a state mainly comes from three kinds of wrong thinking. First, people hold a strong
belief that they can hardly change the results no matter how hard they work. Second, they only
connect failure with their own weaknesses but pay little attention to outside conditions, such as the environment or unexpected accidents. Third, they only see their mistakes but hardly realize the
progress they have made. For example, a runner feels upset about not winning the running race but fails to notice his running speed has improved.
He developed another idea “learned optimism (乐观)”, which means optimism can be learned and trained as a useful life skill. To help people learn it easily, he designed the
classic ABCDE method, which helps people build optimism by guiding them to question negative
试卷第 8 页,共 15 页
thoughts and take positive action.
Learned helplessness is not a final state. By using the scientific method, setting small and clear goals, and praising our own progress, we can build optimism little by little. Failure is not a final judgment, but a chance for us to think and improve.
31 .What’s the correct order of Seligman’s dog experiment
①The dogs gave up trying even with an open door.
②The dogs got electric shocks they couldn’t avoid.
③The dogs were put in a closed box with no way out.
A .②→③→① B .③→②→① C .③→①→② 32 .What did the experiment with dogs show according to the passage
A .Repeated failure did harm to dogs’ courage.
B .Dogs gave up easily when facing difficulties.
C .Electric shocks caused dogs’ health problems.
33 .Which thinking may cause learned helplessness
A .Tom believes he can improve by practicing every day.
B .Lucy thinks her failure was due to nervousness this time.
C .Peter thinks his failure is because he’s just not smart enough.
34 .Which sentence can be put in the
A .As a result, nobody wants to face their mistakes.
B .Besides, Seligman did more experiments on animals.
C .However, Seligman’s later research brought people hope.
35 .What is the writer’s main purpose of writing the passage
A .To explain three kinds of wrong thinking among teenagers.
B .To tell teenagers a famous psychologist’s funny experiment.

C .To introduce an unhealthy state and help teenagers fight against it.

Brazilian artist Vik Muniz uses everyday objects in unusual ways. Through his art, Muniz makes people think differently about their everyday lives, even their own rubbish.
In 2007, Muniz worked on a two-year project at one of the world’s largest landfills (垃圾填埋场). Until it closed in 2012, Jardim Gramacho got about 70 percent of the rubbish from Rio de Janeiro. About 3,000 rubbish pickers worked there. Their job was to collect the rubbish that they
试卷第 11 页,共 15 页
could sell to recycling companies.
Their work was dirty and dangerous. Most of them only got between $20 and $25 a day, but many were proud of their work. Valter Dos Santos, who worked there for more than 25 years, told Muniz “I am proud to be a picker. And what we do prevents great harm to the environment. Even one small bottle matters a lot!”
Muniz became friends with these workers. They allowed him to take their photos for artistic portraits (肖像). The workers then helped Muniz recreate huge images (图像) of these photos.
They made the images colorful and deep with materials from the landfill.
Why create such huge images from rubbish Muniz said he wanted to change people’s lives with the same materials they deal with every day. A work of his sold for $50,000 at a London art sale. And Muniz gave the money to the pickers’ organization.
In 2010, director Lucy Walker created a movie about Muniz’s project called Waste Land. The film won great popularity and helped make people learn about the garbage collectors’ lives. The collectors also began to see themselves differently, “Sometimes we see ourselves as so
small,” says Irma; a cook at Gramacho, “but people out there see us as so big, so beautiful.”

The 2026 CCTV Spring Festival Gala wowed people with the program Wu BOT, where humanoid robots performed traditional Chinese kung fu together with young artists, making it a big hit of this year’s gala.
The robots are designed and produced by Unitree Technology, a leading Chinese tech
company. These Unitree H1 and G1 robots performed difficult movements on stage, such as
drunken boxing and nunchaku (双节棍)—once thought impossible for machines. With
high-precision (高精度的) control and smooth movement design, the robots moved smoothly and worked naturally with human performers.
The most memorable part was the 1.8-meter-tall H2 robot. Unlike other robots, not only did it wear a heavy costume, but it held a magic golden stick. What’s more, it even stood on a “cloud” made of robot dogs! This creative idea brought a classic Chinese story The Monkey King to life
with modern technology.
At the 2025 gala, the company’s robots could only perform simple group dances. This year, however, its H1 and G1 robots completed kung fu movements without any difficulty and seemed like real kung fu masters.
Wu BOT is more than just a fun stage act. It helps young people understand traditional
Chinese culture, especially kung fu, in a new way. It also shows the public the latest developments in China’s humanoid robot technology. In the future, such technology will be widely used in
public places like schools, hotels, restaurants and so on.

Say No to Plastic Pollution
Plastic makes our life convenient, but it brings serious harm to sea animals. As the pictures show, people often throw plastic bottles and trash carelessly. These plastics flow into the ocean,
and sea creatures may mistake them for food or get tangled in them, which puts their lives in great danger.
To stop plastic pollution, we can take three simple but useful actions. First, we should carry reusable water bottles and bags to avoid using single-use plastics. Second, we need to sort rubbish correctly and recycle plastic items. Third, we can tell our family and friends about the harm of
plastic pollution.
Let’s take action now!
