三、(30 分)阅读理解
A
For thousands of years, people have looked up into the night sky and wondered if humans could live on other
planets. While Mars is often discussed, Venus, the Earth’s closest neighbor, is also an interesting planet to study.
Venus is often thought of as the Earth’s twin sister because the size and composition of the two planets are
similar. But Venus has some of the most unusual conditions in our solar system .
Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system because its thick air is full of CO . It holds heat like a blanket
and keeps the planet’s surface temperature at about 465°C.The air on the planet is so thick that if you try to move
your arms quickly, you will feel resistance like swimming in water.
Similarly, it is hard to overlook the high air pressure on Venus, which is about 92 times stronger than that on
Earth. To experience that pressure on Earth, you have to travel more than 914 metres down into the ocean.
Even time works differently on Venus: It takes Venus about 225 Earth days to travel around the sun, and 243
Earth days to rotate on its axis . The sun rises once every 117 Earth days, meaning that you can only enjoy about
two sunrises every year. What’s more, the sun rises in the west and sets in the east!
So if humans try to live on Venus, we will face many challenges and it is nearly impossible with the
technology we have now. This exactly reminds us that Earth remains the only known planet with conditions
perfectly suitable for life. For our future, it’s necessary to protect it by making less pollution and saving resources .
Let’s take care of our beautiful blue planet—the only home for humanity together!

The Chihuahuan Desert in West Texas is larger than any other desert in North America. The winters there are
cool and summers are very hot. This area is also home to a mysterious phenomenon called the Marfa Lights.
The Marfa Lights are bright lights that appear in the night sky all of a sudden and then fly to faraway places
and disappear. They are about the size of basketballs and are often described as white, blue, yellow, red, or other
colors. The lights sometimes even get close to people’s houses. One woman who lived on a farm told the story of
what she experienced one night. She was in bed and suddenly she saw the lights shining through her bedroom
window. She watched them change color for a few minutes. Finally, they went away. Pilots who used to train in
the desert in the 1940s also reported that they once saw these mysterious lights.
What causes this phenomenon People have different opinions on this. A popular interpretation is the lights
might have something to do with headlights from cars on the road nearby. Scientific research also suggests that
some of the lights are caused by the refraction of light between layers of air that have different temperatures.
However, not all of them can be explained so easily.
Anyway, people will continue to study the lights to find out where they come from. No matter what these
lights really are, they are as mysterious today as when they first appeared. But it is certain that the mystery behind
them will be solved one day.
