The opera of Dream of the Red Chamber (《红楼梦》), the first opera adapted from an 18th-century Chinese novel under the same name, returned to San Francisco in mid-June, 2022, six years after its world debut (首演). The opera, developed for the Western audience, has received international praise since its first performance.
Zhang Meigui, a 28-year-old opera singer, played the role of Daiyu in the opera. To show the audience a fresh version (版本), she had been preparing for half a year. “I’ve watched the video of the first production many times. I think the performance of the singer (playing Daiyu) is excellent, which is very challenging and requires a lot of skills,” she said. “For example, Daiyu finds her world more and more helpless as her health continues to worsen. She sings, ‘When spring is gone and beauty is spent, who cares for the dying flowers ’”
“The singer needs to keep the high notes (高音) with a soft sound, which requires more breath support and air control,” said Zhang, “Some parts of the music are more powerful and require a very expressive sound.”
Bright Sheng, the opera’s composer, explained in an interview why Daiyu sang in a loud voice. “Music carries feelings that words cannot explain or say. To me, it has to be loud crying, beating her chest as she looks up at the sky to ask these questions. ” For the new production, Sheng said he made some changes. He said, “A great opera is not only a big musical theatre in action, but also a perfect mixture of music and drama.”
“There’s no boundary in the world of music. It can connect people with different backgrounds. I hope American people will be touched by this opera and experience the beauty of Chinese culture,” Zhang added.

Late on a rainy Saturday evening, the City Museum reported a theft: a valuable 19th-century oil painting named Twilight by the Lake had disappeared from its exhibition hall. The painting was put in a glass case with a high-tech lock, and only three staff members and one special visitor could get into the hall that day.
Detective Clara Voss got to the scene at once. She noticed that the glass case was fine—no scratches or cracks—and there were no signs that someone had tried to break the lock open. The security camera in the hall had been turned off at 7: 15 p. m., just 45 minutes before people found the painting was lost. The museum’s security system noted that the last person to enter the hall before the camera stopped working was Dr. Elena Marek, the curator who was good at 19th-century art.
The three suspects were asked to answer questions:
1. Dr. Elena Marek: She said she had checked the painting at 6: 30 p. m. to get ready for the next day’s exhibition. “I left the hall at 6: 45 p.m. to go to a meeting with the museum director” she told the detective. She showed her notebook with detailed notes about the painting’s condition, but there were light blue ink marks on her hands.
2. Jake Torres: The museum’s electrician He said he was repairing the lights near the exhibition hall around 7 p. m. “I didn’t go into the hall—I only fixed the ceiling lights outside,” he explained. His toolbox had wires, a screwdriver and a small can of oil, but no one could prove where he was at that time.
3. Ms. Lila Chen: A visiting art expert who had asked for special permission to study the painting. She said she spent 30 minutes watching the painting from 5: 30 p.m. “I left the museum at 6 p.m because the rain became heavier,” she said. She showed a photo of the painting she took but the photo showed the painting’s frame was a little tilted—different from how it looked in the morning’s security video.
Detective Voss checked everything carefully. She found that the high-tech lock needed a special access code and a fingerprint scan to open. Only Dr. Marek and the museum director had both, but the director was at a meeting in another city that day. She also found that the blue ink on Dr. Marek’s hands was the same as the ink used on the labels at the back of museum paintings. When she checked the storage room, she saw a roll of new labels with its first sheet missing—and the sheet was later found hidden in Jake’s toolbox.
“Let’s put all the clues together ” Detective Voss said “Dr. Marek, you didn’t go to the meeting at 6:45 p.m.—you stayed in the hall and copied the access code with the blue ink labels. Then you asked Jake to turn off the security camera by saying there was something wrong with the lights. Jake, you used the oil in your toolbox to make the lock easy to open quietly, and you stole the painting while Dr. Marek drew the front desk staff’s attention away. Ms. Chen’s photo proved the painting had already been moved before she left, which was just the time you planned the crime.
Dr. Marek and Jake admitted their crime. They had planned to sell the painting secretly to make money, thinking the heavy rain and the turned-off camera would help them hide what they did. But the blue ink marks and the missing label sheet made their crime known to everyone.
32.Why did Detective Voss not believe Dr. Marek’s words about her meeting
A. There were no meeting notes in her notebook.
B. The museum director said there was no such meeting.
C. Her hands had blue ink marks matching the museum’s labels.
D. She could not explain why the frame was tilted in Ms. Chen’s photo.
33.How did Ms. Chen’s photo help Detective Voss solve the case
A. It recorded the exact time when the two thieves stole the painting.
B. It clearly showed the appearance of the two thieves in the exhibition hall.
C. It told the detective that Ms. Chen had worked with the two thieves secretly.
D. It showed the painting’s frame was tilted, proving the painting had been moved early.
34.Which is the correct order of the events of the theft
a. Jake Torres turned off the security camera of the exhibition hall.
b. Jake used oil to open the lock quietly and took the painting away.
c. Dr. Marek and Jake Torres planned to sell the stolen painting secretly for money.
d. Dr. Marek copied the access code of the painting’s glass case with blue ink labels.
e. The valuable painting Twilight by the Lake was found missing from the City Museum.
A. c-d-b-a-e B. c-d-a-b-e C. e-c-d-a-b D. e-c-b-a-d
35.What might be the reason that the two thieves chose Saturday evening to steal the painting
A. They could ask Ms. Chen to help them move the painting without being found.
B. The museum was crowded with visitors and it was easy to hide themselves in the crowd.
C. The director was in another city and could take charge of the museum’s security work on time.
D. The heavy rain and the turned-off security camera could help them cover their tracks and avoid being caught.

Do you know what Oscar is When did it start Maybe you can find the background of the awards in the following passage.
The awards started in 1929. Their full title is "The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards". The Academy is a group of people who have worked in the film industry for many years. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was a huge success and it won the award for best foreign language film in 2001. It also won several technical awards for its amazing "flying" people. We expect to see more awards for Chinese film in the near future.
It's time for the Oscar again. Once more, the stars will dress up in their finest and go to Kodar Theater. There, they will find out who had won the awards for best actor, best actress and best director. Millions of people watch the awards every year to find out who the winners are.
