Many English learners like to write long sentences in their compositions (作文).
They want to impress others with their vocabulary and mastery of grammar. But remember, “wordy” sentences, or sentences that are unnecessarily long, can prevent us from communicating clearly. In a good sentence, every word should serve a purpose and appear in the right place.
Let’s look at an example of a wordy sentence: “There is currently a lively, ongoing debate (辩论) among many university teachers and other experts who study human nature, during which arguments are being presented about what it means that so many young people who live in our society today are so interested in stories about superheroes.” Can you easily understand this 46-word sentence Well, you’re not alone if you can’t. In one interview, only 25 percent of people understood it.
Now, compare it to this simpler sentence: “University teachers are discussing why young people like superhero stories.” See It’s much easier to understand and still shows the same meaning.
Here are some tips to help you avoid wordy sentences.
Tip 1: Use active verbs instead of passive ones. For example, say “The family bought a new car.” instead of “A new car was bought by the family.”
Tip 2: Avoid wordy phrases. Instead of “as a matter of fact”, just use “in fact”.
Tip 3: Put sentences together when possible. For example, instead of “Ann likes the book, and her best friend Margot likes it too,” say “Both Ann and her best friend Margot enjoy the book.”

31.I’m Albert Bandura, but you can call me Bert. This is the space where I can help you with your daily life problems, one-on-one. Go ahead and ask away!
Dear Albert, I think I am quite active and energetic. I’m always ready to take part in school activities. However, some of my classmates try to keep me out of these activities. They even laugh at me when they win prizes. This makes me feel upset. What should I do Tony
Hi, Tony, I understand how you feel. It hurts when others don’t include you or laugh at you. But please remember, being active and willing to join school activities is a great thing! You should feel proud of yourself for trying your best and showing courage. I once had a similar experience. When I was in my school’s track and field (田径) team, I sometimes felt out of place (不自在的) and was made fun of because of acting differently. Later, I joined the school quiz team instead. There, I met new friends who accepted me, and I finally felt like I belonged. It taught me that everyone has their own group out there where they fit in. Sometimes, people laugh because they don’t understand others or want to feel better about themselves. Here are some of my suggestions. Try not to let their words stop you from doing what you enjoy. You can also make friends with classmates who share your interests. If the problem continues, try talking to a teacher. They can help you find a good solution and make sure everyone feels included. 38.【答案】Dear Joanna,
I’m sorry to hear that you have lost the election and failed to become a Chinese Communist Youth League member last week.
Maybe you didn’t prepare well enough for the election, or there were other excellent competitors who did better. Don’t be sad; failure is just a step to success.
Here are some suggestions for you. First, work harder at your lessons and try to get better grades. Second, take part in more class activities to show your kindness and ability. Third, talk with your teachers or friends when you meet problems.
I believe you will do better next time. Keep trying and never give up.
Albert
