Want to eat healthier Maybe a new type of rice can help you! A study published in February 2024 said that Chinese scientists had used gene editing to create a special type of rice that produces coenzyme (辅酶) CoQ10.
What exactly is CoQ10 It’s an antioxidant that our bodies make. It also helps us stay healthy and is especially good for our hearts. As we get older, our bodies make less of it, so having extra CoQ10 in our food can be really good for us. Usually, rice and other plants don’t make much CoQ10. Instead, they make something called CoQ9.
After studying more than 1,000 plant species and using machine learning techniques, the scientists used gene editing to create a new rice type that can make CoQ10.
Their study also showed that the new rice grows just as well as regular rice. According to the study’s co-author Xu Jingjing, this rice stays nutritious even when it’s cooked. That means we’ll get the health benefits when we eat it. If you eat this special CoQ10 rice every day, you can get about 1 to 2 milligrams of CoQ10. That’s almost the same amount you’d get from eating meat! So, this new rice can be a great addition to our daily diets.
Another Chinese scientist, Zhao Qing, said that their research not only helps us understand how plants have changed over thousands of years, but also shows us new ways to improve other crops using similar techniques.
