The North American Prairie was once one of the largest grasslands on Earth. Today much of it lies beneath cities or croplands or roadways. Yet parts of the prairie are still there.
Just east of the Rocky Mountains lies a stretch of short grass prairie. There you will still find prairie dogs. You’ll see short grass and big yellow sunflowers. You could see a snake glide past or a hawk circling overhead. And you might even catch sight of a rabbit.

These plants and animals are all important to this prairie ecosystem. An ecosystem can be described as the soil, rocks, plants, animals, water, climate, land, and all the processes that link these things together.
All living things work together to keep a prairie ecosystem healthy. These species might not survive in a different ecosystem. But all are right at home here, getting everything they need from the prairie.
