Last year, my husband and I decided to make our 12-storey building more of a community. We live in a small rented apartment in Park Merced, a large housing development. I would call us lower-middle-class. A lot of nurses, bus drivers, and tradesmen live here, many of them 1st or 2nd generation immigrants.
We’re all renters. Renters come and go and tend not to see the buildings they live in as their
试卷第 4 页,共 13 页
home. But it can be done. We started with a monthly two-hour social in the building lobby (门厅) on the second Friday of each month. Some people came, between 15-30 each time. The events
lasted two hours, but there wasn’t much to do besides talking, eating snacks and drinking juice. The socials were nice, but most residents gave them a miss.
Then one day I was on the nearby campus of San Francisco State University. A young man from a social club for students had a big sign about “Building Community”. I asked, “How do you do that ” He said they tried to get people to share something about themselves with at least one
other person. That made much sense to me.
I bought a large world map. At the social, I taped it on the lobby wall with signs saying
“Where We’re From. Put a green sticker where you were born and yellow stickers where your
grandparents were born.” People put up their stickers and looked where other people came from. We left the map up overnight, and the next day, Saturday, more people played. I planned to leave the map and stickers up for a month or more. They certainly made the lobby more interesting than the housing project look it usually has.
I see there will be challenges, but I also know a strong community will help us live good lives. I have the time and energy to do this work.

From Scotland to Cornwall, an organic, regenerative collective of the UK farmers is

looking to pair up with sustainable businesses that need access to land and tools. Pitch Up! was founded in 2021 by Tim May, of Kingsclere Estates (庄园) farm in Hampshire. It offers land, resources and expertise to businesses with big ideas for sustainable projects. The idea is to copy nature’s “closed loop” system, with waste being reused to create a booming circular (循环的)
farming community.
“Our goal is to have a diverse mix of enterprises (企业) all operating off the land — using each other’s byproducts or waste, and sharing knowledge, equipment and experience,” says May. “Nature thrives (兴盛) on diversity; it also fuels economic resilience (韧性), helps create a
closed-loop system, and builds stronger rural communities. As farmers, we have an abundance of land and natural resources, and we want to share those resources and bring more people on to the land.”
Pitch Up! has already helped to launch a handful of businesses. Balcaskie Estate covers
2,000 hectares of land in Fife, Scotland, and has hosted markets, a butchery, and pop ups by Scotland The Bread, an organization that works to get more people eating better bread.
Rosie Jack, Balcaskie’s business development manager, says, “We know that there’s a real demand for rural land so our message is, ‘We have land, come and use it!’ We really do welcome approaches from businesses of all shapes and sizes.”
This year, the Pitch Up! farming collective is keen to hear from more cooperative
enterprisers. “We are looking for sustainable businesses at all stages ofthe business life cycle, but particularly those that have an idea of how they can fit into the circular systems in place at a Pitch Up! farm,” says May, “It might be a cheese maker for example, who can add value by using the
organic milk from the mobile dairy business here.”

The field of anti-ageing medicine has exploded in recent years due to discoveries about the fundamental biology of ageing, which are translated into experimental therapies (疗法). The latest fountain of youth comes in the form of vaccines (疫苗) against age-related conditions — cancer, heart disease, dementia and more. The first of these could be available by the end of the decade.
All-purpose anti-ageing injections are also in development.
The upsides of such vaccines are clear. Anything, limiting the impact of age-related
conditions on people who live into old age and the loved ones who often end up caring for them, has to be welcomed. They also promise to lessen the effect on the increasingly societal and
economic costs of these diseases.
But as with all anti-ageing interventions, there are potential downsides too. If millions of
people live significantly longer, we risk a population explosion on a planet with overstretched
resources. If the vaccines merely delay the beginning of age-related conditions, they will only
postpone the burden on people and society. And as Nobel prizewinner Venki Ramakrishnan told
us earlier, a long-lived society is likely to become less dynamic. These are familiar fears. The
common response is to focus on increasing health span, which means people living for longer, free from the diseases of old age, then suddenly declining and dying.
We won’t know the outcome until the therapies have been widely used, at which point it
might be too late to put the genie back in the bottle. But there is really no turning back anyway. If vaccines and other anti-ageing therapies work and are affordable, they will be used. Besides,
nobody would argue that innovations like antibiotics, vaccines and advanced diagnostics were a bad idea even if they marked the beginning of our era of age-related diseases. Similarly, we
shouldn’t fear life-saving medical advances on the basis of unintended consequences. If we can make lives longer and less painful, the downsides are a price worth paying.
12 .Why is the field of anti-ageing medicine growing rapidly
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
A .The biology of ageing is better applied.
B .The trend of healthy lifestyle is growing.
C .The demand for longer life is increasing.

A .By increasing the workforce. B .By reducing healthcare expense.
C .By curing people of diseases. D .By boosting economic growth.
14 .What does the underlined phrase “put the genie back in the bottle” mean
A .To stop the process of ageing totally.
B .To create a new medical breakthrough.
C .To remove the impact of the therapies.
D .To delay the development of technology.
15 .What is the best title for this article
A .Can Anti-Ageing Medicine Really Work
B .What Is the Risk of Anti-Ageing Medicine

I hated writing as I grew up. But I couldn’t avoid it: learning English was a must in high school. For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my disorganized thoughts into fluent sentences. I tried my best but my teachers would return my papers littered with red. I was
frustrated to no end. 16 And that was OK. I didn’t have to be good at everything.
17 I liked it when objective truth could be found if I searched properly. In
college, I joined a scientific research lab. However, the joy was short-lived as I had to write a research paper about our findings.
I knew that ifI wanted to become an academic, I would need to spend time penning papers. But with my awful track record with writing, I was scared of failing. In a panic, I asked a graduate

student in my lab for help. We defined a goal for the paper, and I carefully wrote an outline. But when I asked him for feedback, I soon found the paper covered in red marks. 18
Before I could give up in defeat, though, the graduate student explained those red marks
didn’t mean I was a bad writer. 19 It requires revising your work, often several times. I kept improving the outline of my paper, eventually turning it into sentences and paragraphs. My initial draft wasn’t perfect. I had buried a few key takeaways, and the introduction was missing important context. But with help, I finally made it.
From then on, writing became one of my favorite parts of research. 20 But I came around. All it took was some trial and error.
A .I should view it in a positive way.
B .“Never again,” I screamed inside.
C .Writing isn’t a one-and-done thing.
D .I soon realized writing was my strength.
E .Maybe I just wasn’t meant to be a writer.
F .I switched to the world of math and science.
G .I had never imagined it in my wildest dreams.

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for
swimming in the waters. More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse sill, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea
becoming consumed by waste. One weekend,Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and
picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with aching legs and arms,
Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently. Noticing their low spirits,
Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened ”Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice,“It’s those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and
comforted,”Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.”“Just two of
us.”complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other.Suddenly, an idea lashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes,that’s the point! We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.
