March is the month to learn from Lei Feng in China. Lei Feng is probably one of the most famous Chinese soldier (士兵). He helped many people during his 22 years of life. Even though he died over 60 years ago, the "Lei Feng spirit" still encourages Chinese people to do volunteer work. In 1963, Chairman Mao called on the nation to learn from Lei Feng, and March 5th of every year has been named as "Lei Feng Day".
During this month, a group of Malaysian (马来西亚的) students, studying at the Changsha Social Work College, volunteered to serve passengers at the Changsha Railway Station with their Chinese schoolmates. They carefully helped passengers get on the train safely and book tickets. They also provided waiting rooms for special passengers and solved problems for them.
"I was so excited when I was called a ‘living Lei Feng'! That was the highest praise (赞扬) for me as a volunteer!" said Lan Zhicong, the Chinese name of an international student from Malaysia. He learnt about Lei Feng's stories when he was in Malaysia. After coming to Changsha, Lei Feng's hometown, he became a "living Lei Feng" and continued the "Lei Feng stories" with his actions. "Volunteering is about giving, but I've gotten a lot, too," he said.
This year, Changsha Social Work College held an activity called "Learn from Lei Feng in Lei Feng's hometown". Many volunteer teams of teachers and students did different volunteer jobs at stations, communities or schools to pass on the Lei Feng spirit.
