1. used to be曾经是……(P5L1)
My grandma used to be a doctor, but she retired many
years ago.(我的奶奶曾经是一名医生,但多年前退休了。)
used to be后接表示职业、身份的名词或接形容词,强调
“过去的身份/状态,现在已改变”。
used to do sth.过去常常做某事,例如:My grandpa used to
walk in the park every morning.
be/get used to doing sth.习惯于做某事,例如:My grandpa gets
used to living in the countryside.
翻译“他曾经是一名消防员。”(firefighter消防员)

He used to be a firefighter.
2. be patient with sb.对某人有耐心(P5L4)
She is kind to everyone and very patient with people,
and she is always cheerful.(她对所有人都很友善,对人们非常
有耐心,而且总是很开朗。)
patient为形容词,with后接“人”,表示“对某人有耐
心”。
翻译“这位老师对学生很有耐心。”

This teacher is very patient with the students.
3. help sb. with sth.帮助某人做某事(P5L7)
Grandma helps many old people in the community with
their medical problems.(奶奶帮助社区里的许多老人解决他们的
健康问题。)
with后面接名词或代词,同义结构为“help sb. (to) do
sth.”。
翻译“她帮助我学习英语。”

She helps me with my English./She helps me (to) learn English.
4. take good care of细心照顾;照料(P5L13)
Grandma takes good care of us.(奶奶细心照顾我们。)
强调“用心、细致地照顾”,后接人或事物(如家人、宠
物、物品等),同义短语为look after … well。
care about关心(侧重情感上的在意,例如:My mum always
cares about my studies.)
翻译“妈妈细心照顾我的妹妹。”(younger sister妹妹)

Mum takes good care of my younger sister.
5. be strict about sth.对某事要求严格(P5L40)
Mr Li is strict about our schoolwork …(李老师对我们的
学业要求严格……)
后接名词(如schoolwork, rules等),若强调“对某人要
求严格”用be strict with sb.。
翻译“我的妈妈对我的日常作息要求严格。”(daily
schedule日常作息)

My mum is strict about my daily schedule.
6. work out解决(问题);算出(答案)(P5L43)
If we cannot work out a difficult maths problem, he will
encourage us to think about it in a new way.(如果我们解不出一
道数学难题,他会鼓励我们用新的方式思考它。)
后接名词(如problem、maths exercise等),侧重通过思
考、计算完成难题。
work out还可表示“锻炼身体”,例如:He works out in the
gym every weekend.
翻译“他花了十分钟算出这道数学题。”

It took him ten minutes to work out the maths problem.
7. encourage sb. to do sth.鼓励某人做某事(P5L45)
… he will encourage us to think about it in a new
way.(……他会鼓励我们用新的方式思考它。)
encourage后接to do作宾语补足语,不能接动词-ing形
式。
用括号内单词的适当形式填空。
She always encourages me (read) more books.

8. give up放弃(P5L47)
Never give up, and you’ll be successful.(永不放弃,你

后接名词或动词-ing形式,表示“放弃某事/做某事”。

 My favourite family member is my grandpa. He retired a few
years ago but stays cheerful daily—he shares interesting work
stories to make us laugh at meals. My grandpa is really smart;
he can fix almost any broken household items(家居用品), from
my toy robot to the old clock. He’s strict about my study but
never harsh. When I struggle with difficult subjects, he patiently
walks me through them step by step and encourages me not to give up. Whenever I’m frustrated, he gives me strong support and tells me persistence(坚持) leads to success. I deeply admire him for teaching me practical skills and showing me how to be kind and determined(坚定的).
