Grammar Rules
情态动词本身有一定的含义,表示说话人对有关行为或事物的态度和看法。情态动词所表示的情态有:命令、允诺、义务、可能、需要等。我们所熟悉的can和may都属于这类词。情态动词一般无人称和数的变化,后面接的动词需用原形,否定式是在情态动词后面加not。

你应当听从医生的建议。
如果你想保持健康,就不应该吃太多垃圾食品。
should表示建议或劝告,意为 “应当”,可用于肯定句、否定句和疑问句。
否定形式should not (shouldn't) 表示 “不应” 的意思。
(1) As a student, you should finish your homework
on time every day.
作为一名学生,你应当每天按时完成作业。
(2) We should take care of our parents when they
get old.
父母年老时,我们应该照顾他们。
should还可以表示责任或义务,意为 “应当,应该”。

can
(1) You can leave early today.
(2) You can't put the milk in first.
你今天可以早点走。
你不能先倒入牛奶。
can表示“请求允许” 和 “给予许可”,意为“能,可以”,可用于肯定句、否定句和疑问句。
否定形式cannot (can't) 表示 “不能,不可以”,语气弱于must not (mustn't — 不应该 / 禁止)。

(没有禁止的含义)
TIP
could表示请求允许时,语气更委婉,比can听起来更有礼貌。

can的一般疑问句的构成及其回答
请问我们现在能回家吗?
可以。(表示允许) / 不行。(表示不允许)
(1) My dad can speak three languages: Chinese,
English and French.
我爸爸会说三种语言:汉语、英语和法语。
(2) I can finish reading this storybook in two days.
我可以在两天内读完这本故事书。
can还可以表能力,意为 “能够,可以”。

need
(1) If she wants anything, she need only ask.
(2) You needn't wait.
如果她想要什么,只需要说一声就行。
你不必等待。
need作情态动词时表动作的必要性,意为 “需要”,可用于肯定句、否定句和疑问句。
否定形式need not (needn't)比较常用,表示 “不需要” 或 “不必要”。

need的一般疑问句的构成及其回答

是的,你必须报告。(表示必须做) /
不,没必要。(表示没必要)
(1) I need to get some sleep.

我需要把房子打扫一下。
need也可以作行为动词,意思也是 “需要”,常用于 need to do sth. 结构。
(3) You don't need to leave now. It's still early.
你没必要现在就走,时间还早。

(1) She must learn to manage her time better.
(2) You mustn't talk loudly in the library.
她必须学会更好地管理自己的时间。
图书馆内禁止大声喧哗。
must表说话人主观上的必要性或义务,意为 “必须”,可用于肯定句、否定句和疑问句。
否定形式must not (mustn't)表示 “不应该” 或 “禁止” 的意思。

must的一般疑问句的构成及其回答
明天我必须在六点半之前来吗?
是的,你必须在那之前到。(表示一定要) /
不,你不必在那之前来。
(表示没必要,相当于You don't have to.)
(1) I have to leave because of the bad weather.
因为天气不好,我不得不离开了。
(2) You don't have to get up early tomorrow because
it's the weekend.
你明天不必早起,因为明天是周末。
have to表客观上的必要性,意为 “不得不;必须”。可用于肯定句、否定句和疑问句。
have to
否定式为do not (don't) have to,相当于needn't。
have to和must的区别:
All passengers must wear seat belts.
have to 侧重于客观需要,含有 “不得不,被迫” 之意。
must 侧重于说话者的主观看法,认为有必要或有义务去做某事。
My bike was broken yesterday, so I had to walk to
school.
昨天我的自行车坏了,所以我只能走路去学校。
所有乘客都要系安全带。

had better
(1) You'd better get some sleep.
(2) You'd better not waste any more of your time.
你最好睡一会儿。
你最好别再浪费你的时间了。
had better表示劝告或建议,意为 “最好……”。
had better一般不用于疑问句中,但可用于否定句中,其否定形式为had better not,表示 “最好不要……”。
