　　At the age of 85， famous Chinese archaeologist Fan
Jinshi， was awarded by UNESCO for her contribution to the
protection of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang.
　　Called the “daughter of Dunhuang”， her story with the
caves started 60 years ago. In 1963， Fan， then a 25－year－
old Peking University graduate， had the chance to work at the
Mogao Caves.
　　“Seeing Dunhuang for the first time was breathtaking. But
only when truly staying here did I realize that inside the caves is
a world of divine(神圣的) beauty while outside is a land of
blowing sand and yellow earth，” Fan told Gansu Daily.
　　Back in those days， the Mogao Caves were almost
completely cut off from the world. Fan and her coworkers had
to live in mud houses and drink salty water. They stayed inside
the Caves to copy murals(壁画) and do whatever they could to
protect and restore them. In 2011， after 40 years of hard
work， a report on 10 Mogao Caves by Fan’s team was finally
published. It was known as China’s first professional report on
cave archaeology.
　　As time passed， Fan found a serious problem. The
increasing number of tourists visiting Dunhuang might harm the
caves， causing the murals inside to fade. Something needed to
be done to preserve Dunhuang’s heritage.
　　In the late 1980s， Fan found computer technology by
chance. She realized that this might preserve the Mogao Caves
forever. After over 30 years of exploration， the Dunhuang
Academy built a digital database to protect cultural relics(文物)
there， allowing Dunhuang’s art to live forever and to step out of
the caves to meet the world.
　　“In my whole life， I’ve only done one thing： protect and
promote the world cultural heritage of the Mogao Caves，” she
told People’s Daily. “My heart belongs to Dunhuang.”

　　Gu Fangzhou was born in June， 1926. He studied at
Peking University as a medical student in 1944. After graduation， Gu made the decision to work to help improve public health.
　　In 1955， polio broke out in Nantong， Jiangsu Province.
It paralyzed(使瘫痪) 1，680 people， mostly children aged
below seven. It spread to neighbouring areas and resulted in 466
deaths. Gu was asked to lead polio research in 1957. “At that
time， the only way to prevent polio was to invent a vaccine(疫
苗)，” said Gu.
　　In 1959， Gu succeeded in developing the first polio live
vaccine. Later， he developed the “sugar-coated(糖衣) pill”
vaccine in 1962. It not only tasted better but was much easier to
keep. In order to test the vaccine， Gu himself tried the vaccine
and later his one-month-old son was vaccinated. This
inspired his team to vaccinate their kids. They became the first
group of people in China to try a polio vaccine. “If we don’t
believe in what we produce， how can others believe in it？”
said Gu.
　　Later， the sugar pill was popular in China. It saved
millions of people， especially kids. In 2000， the World Health
Organization(WHO) announced(宣布) that China was already a
polio-free country. “We feel satisfied. I can tell people that I
tried my best， and your kids will no longer get polio，” said
Gu. “That’s all we hoped for.”
