always in hand as if it were some magic self-defense tool capable of protecting me from all evil in the world.I also love my laptop, because it holds all of my writing and thoughts.Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices and truly communicate with others. On occasion, I teach History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas.Because I want students to thoroughly study the materials and exchange their ideas in the classroom, I have a rule — no laptop, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance, some of them were not happy. Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences with students misusing technology. There's a bit of truth to that. Some assume that I am anti-technology.There's no truth in that at all.I love technology and try to keep up with it, so I can relate to my students. The real reason is that I think there are very few places where we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas.Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas.I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration.I want them to think differently and make connections between the course materials and the class discussion.I've been teaching my history class this way for many years. The evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create.Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep course materials beyond the classroom.I'm not saying that I won't ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I'm sticking to my plan.A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up. 1.What upset some students most at the beginning A.The topics for class discussions.B.The requirements for idea exchange.C.The materials chosen for the course.D.The ban on electronic devices in class. √2.Why are the students asked to give up technology in class A.To push them to be more involved.B.To make connections with information.C.To explore their potentials to study better.D.To introduce them to more complex themes. √3.What can be inferred about the author's classes A.They are well received and highly assessed.B.The study environment is far from satisfactory.C.They show his attitude against high technology.D.The managers are promoted by attending the classes. 根据第四段中“The evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create.” √4.What message does the author really want to convey A.He will stick to this practice until he changes for a new job.B.Technology is an effective way to relate teachers to students.C.Unpleasant experiences can be the beginning of some new rules.D.A few hours of technology-free dialogue will harvest a lot. √BSometimes a book comes along that isn't just “interesting” or “well done” — it's a book where it seems like the author looked into your brain and wrote a book specifically for you.A book like that for me was released last week. It's called 100 Things We've Lost to the Internet, written by editor Pamela Paul.Paul lists 100 things we used to do that the Internet has either changed or taken over completely: writing letters, printing newspapers, the joys of being bored, and not having all the knowledge in the world in your pocket. As I often accumulate random knowledge, certain entries on the list — Being the Only One, Figuring Out Who That Actor Is — hit me where I live; remembering detailed facts is no longer nearly as impressive when everyone has the capability to find the answer in seconds. On and on the list goes, with every minor shift adding to the pile. What this book does so well is illustrate the growth of that pile; while any individual item might be no big deal, the collected set is significant. It's a list of ways in which the world now is different from the world then.Obviously, Paul isn't saying that everything back then was better.Time marches on, after all, and it's tough to argue against the many benefits that the Internet has brought into our lives. But that isn't really the point. It's not about whether it used to be better. It's that it used to be different.100 Things We've Lost to the Internet is a fun read for those of us who share some of Paul's memories and experience. We remember what it was like and we like to remember. The landscape has shifted, and no doubt it will shift again as technology's advancement continues apace (高速地).This book serves as a reminder of the simple truth that when gains are made, sometimes something is lost. 5.What is the purpose of the text A.To review and recommend a good read.B.To comment on the effect of the Internet.C.To argue for the viewpoint of a new book.D.To urge the readers to value what they have. √6.Which might be entries on Paul's list A.Maps and Eye Contact.B.E-pay and Compact Disks.C.Postcards and Homeschooling.D.Photos and Washing Machines. √7.What does the underlined part “hit me where I live” in paragraph 3 mean A.Prove what I'm good at.B.Introduce how I grew up.C.Describe the place I live in.D.Speak out what is on my mind.√解析:句意理解题。根据第一段中的“it's a book ...for you”和第三段中的“As I often accumulate ...hit me where I live”可知,作者认为一本好书的作者似乎就在洞察你的内心,由于作者经常积累各种随机的知识,故入选该书的某些事物吸引了作者;由此可推知,Being the Only One, Figuring Out Who That Actor Is应该是说出了作者的心声。 8.What conclusion has the author drawn after reading Paul's book A.Things in the past are better.B.There're no gains without pains.C.The Internet is a double-edged sword.D.Technology is constantly changing the world. 根据最后一段中的“This book serves as a reminder of the simple truth that when gains are made, sometimes something is lost.” √CWi-Fi has become an integral part of our fast-paced everyday lives. Thanks to Wi-Fi, we no longer have to be restricted to the Internet with cables. But have you ever stopped to wonder how it works Wi-Fi uses radio waves to transmit information between your device and a router (路由器) via frequencies. Two radio-wave frequencies can be used, depending on the amount of data being sent: 2.4 gigahertz (千赫兹) and 5 gigahertz. What does that mean, though Well, a hertz is just a measurement of frequency. For example, let's say you're sitting on a beach, watching the waves crash to shore. If you measured the time between each wave crash, you'd be measuring the frequency of the waves. One hertz is a frequency of one wave per second. One gigahertz, on the other hand, is one billion waves per second. The higher the frequency, the greater the amount of data transmitted per second. The two Wi-Fi frequencies are split into multiple channels so as to prevent high traffic and interference. When it comes to sharing the data across these channels, well, that's when the magic computer science happens. The first step in the process is initiated by you. When you access the Internet on your device, it transforms the information you've requested into binary (二进制) code, the language of computers.Everything computers do is based in binary code, a series of 1s and 0s.When you click on this article, your request is translated into a bunch of 1s and 0s.The frequencies travel across the radio channels mentioned earlier and are received by the Wi-Fi router that yourdevice is connected to.The router then transforms the frequencies back into binary code and translates the code into the Internet traffic that you requested, and the router receives that data through a hardwired Internet cable. The process repeats itself until you have loaded this article — or anything that requires the Internet. 9.What is the author's attitude to the Wi-Fi access A.Favorable. B.Tolerant.C.Doubtful. D.Unclear. √10.Why does the author mention “sitting on a beach” in paragraph 2 A.To make a prediction.B.To clarify a concept.C.To present a fact.D.To offer a reason. √11.What is the focus of the last paragraph A.The significance of measuring frequency.B.The method of transmitting information.C.The function of translating binary code.D.The principle of sharing data. √12.What can be a suitable title for the text A.When Does Wi-Fi Exist B.What Does Wi-Fi Transmit C.How Does Wi-Fi Work D.Why Does Wi-Fi Matter Five Ways to Stop Wasting Time OnlineHere are five ways you can use to improve your concentration online.Track your productivity. If you track your productivity at your computer, you might be surprised at what you find. __13__ I recommend that you use a free time tracking software to do it.Never just browse (浏览信息) to start. One pattern I've noticed is that many people have tendencies that right after school, after work or coming home from dinner they power up their computers and just browse.Don't do that.Don't do it just to see what's new. __14__ Break the habit — you don't have to always be productive, but at least be aware and don't let the time be to remember. The landscape has shifted, and no doubt it will shift again as technology's advancement continues apace (高速地).This book serves as a reminder of the simple truth that when gains are made, sometimes something is lost.5.What is the purpose of the text A.To review and recommend a good read.B.To comment on the effect of the Internet.C.To argue for the viewpoint of a new book.D.To urge the author drawn after reading Paul's book A.Things in the past are better.B.There're no gains without pains.C.The Internet is a double-edged sword.D.Technology is constantly changing the world.CWi-Fi has become an integral part of our fast-paced everyday lives. For example, let's say you're sitting_on_a_beach,_watching the waves crash to shore. When you access the Internet on your device, it transforms the information you've requested into binary (二进制) code, the language of computers.Everything computers do is based in binary code, a series of 1s and 0s.When you click on this article, your request is translated into a bunch of 1s and 0s.The frequencies travel across the radio channels mentioned earlier and are received by the Wi-Fi router that your device is connected to.The router then transforms the frequencies back into binary code and translates the code into the Internet traffic that you requested, and the router receives that data through a hardwired Internet cable. The process repeats itself until you have loaded this article — or anything that requires the Internet.9.What is the author's attitude to the Wi-Fi access A.Favorable. B.Tolerant.C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.10.Why does the author mention “sitting on a beach” in paragraph 2 A.To make a prediction.B.To clarify a concept.C.To present a fact.D.To offer a reason.11.What is the focus of the last paragraph A.The significance of measuring frequency.B.The method of transmitting information.C.The function of translating binary code.D.The principle of sharing data.12.What can be a suitable title for the text A.When Does Wi-Fi Exist B.What Does Wi-Fi Transmit C.How Does Wi-Fi Work D.Why Does Wi-Fi Matter Ⅱ. Five Ways to Stop Wasting Time OnlineHere are five ways you can use to improve your concentration online.Track your productivity. If you track your productivity at your computer, you might be surprised at what you find.__13__ I recommend that you use a free time tracking software to do it.Never just browse (浏览信息) to start. One pattern I've noticed is that many people have tendencies that right after school, after work or coming home from dinner they power up their computers and just browse.Don't do that.Don't do it just to see what's new.__14__ Break the habit — you don't have to always be productive, but at least be aware and don't let the time be wasted.__15__ Research, as well as personal experience, has shown that taking breaks can improve your effectiveness.I recommend a break every 20 to 30 minutes.Personally, I like to do simple yoga stretches or take a quick walk.Power down. When I'm trying to focus on a task, I turn off my cell phones, computer and TV.Pick the electronic device that needs your focus.__16__ I go a step further and lock my computer every time I get up.I don't take my breaks at my computer: I separate my work space from my rest space.Close your browser.Similar to the previous item, stop leaving your web browser open when you're trying to work.Remove your temptation by closing the web browser. However, you may want to browse websites.__17__A.Always begin with a purpose.B.Use that to complete your task.C.Don't take your breaks at your computer.D.But you have to make the calm decision to open it.E.Do something different to relax yourself at fixed periods.F.You need to make sure you begin effectively when you first sit down to work.G.In an 8-hour day, how much time do you spend on emails, chatting or surfing the web UNIT 根据第四段中“The evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create.” 根据第一段中的“it's a book ...for you”和第三段中的“As I often accumulate ...hit me where I live”可知,作者认为一本好书的作者似乎就在洞察你的内心,由于作者经常积累各种随机的知识,故入选该书的某些事物吸引了作者;由此可推知,Being the Only One, Figuring Out Who That Actor Is应该是说出了作者的心声。 根据最后一段中的“This book serves as a reminder of the simple truth that when gains are made, sometimes something is lost.”
