I was standing in front of an old wooden building, and my friend said, “Check it out! It has no nails (钉子).” I took a closer look and was really surprised. “How on earth does this stay together ” I thought.
The “trick” is called sunmao. This is an ancient technique (技术) with a history of about 7,000 years. The oldest sunmao parts turned up at the Hemudu site (河姆渡遗址) in Yuyao, Zhejiang.
How does sunmao work It looks simple: two pieces of wood are shaped, so one slides (滑动) into the other. But sunmao structures are super strong! In fact, many of them are even stronger than those with metal bolts (金属螺栓). Shanxi’s Pagoda of Fogong Temple (应县木塔) is a shining example. It has been through over 40 earthquakes and 200 bombardments (轰炸) in 900 years! Today, it’s still the oldest and tallest wooden structure in the world.
Throughout its history, craftsmen have produced more than a hundred styles of sunmao. There is also a whole set of methods, such as how to measure (测量) wooden parts and how to put them together.
But is sunmao a thing of the past Of course not, and it’s still alive and well. There are some modern uses of sunmao today. For example, some phone cases (手机壳) borrow the trick, which allows users to take them apart with ease. Packaging (包装) designs do it too, so we can use less plastic and tape. Rocket design uses sunmao-style parts to prevent heat damage during flight and scientists are even considering using sunmao to build a lunar base (基地).
34.Why does the writer mention (提及) the Pagoda of Fogong Temple

D. There are fewer than a hundred types ofsunmao styles.
36.Which of the following is NOT a modern use of sunmao

C. Making phone cases easy to take apart.
D. Preventing heat damage for the rockets.
37.We can read this passage in the ________ part of a magazine.

①Before each exam season, all you can think about for days is studying, preparing, and trying to get the best scores. Even after the exams, some new worries seem to pop (突然出现) into your mind. You may wonder, “Did I write that correctly Why did I even waste time on that question ”
②But this stressful (有压力的) exam period also teaches you important life lessons. Check out what these lessons are, and keep them in mind. They are more important than exams and will last a lifetime. Time management (管理) is the first lesson you can learn. Before exams, you plan hours for each subject — sometimes even giving up fun activities or gatherings to study. This helps you learn not only how to use time wisely, but also how to stick to your timetable.
③Resilience is the second lesson that exams give you. There are moments you want to give up when you prepare for your exams, but you push through and keep trying. That’s resilience: the strength to face difficulties without giving up, even when things are quite hard.
④Finally, exams build self-awareness (自我意识). You have to stay calm when surprises happen — like unexpected (意外的) questions or lower grades. Exams help you know yourself better — how you study, what motivates (激励) you, and what holds you back. The awareness is the first step towards growth.

I was pleased at having run away from Long John Silver. Suddenly, I heard some men talking close by. The voices got closer and I recognized (识别) Silver's voice, so I hid. I listened to Silver and the other man, Tom, talking.
"Silver, " said Tom, "I will not join the mutiny (叛乱). I cannot. " They were interrupted (打断) by a scream. "What was that " asked Tom in great fear.
"That was Alan, " answered Silver. "Have you killed Alan " cried Tom, "Kill me too! "
Tom turned his back on Silver and walked towards the beach. But Silver threw a branch (树枝) at him. Tom fell face down on the ground. Then Silver stabbed (刺) him twice with his knife. Two honest men were now dead because of Silver.
I moved away quickly and quietly. I arrived at the bottom of a hill. I saw a figure moved quickly from tree to tree. My heart beat fast. It was getting closer to me. I felt afraid.

"No, Flint's dead, " I answered. "But some of his crew (船员) are here, sadly. "
"Not a man with one leg " he asked in a tremulous voice, with his pale face and scared eyes.
"Silver " I asked. "Yes, he's the cook and their leader. "
I explained the whole situation to him.
"You're a good boy, Jim, " he said. "I have made a boat, and I keep it by some white rocks near the beach. I was on Flint's ship with Billy Bones and Long John Silver. Flint came to this island with six strong sailors (水手) to bury (埋) his treasure, but when he returned, he himself was alone, and the six all died. 46.Last month, I decided to buy a second-hand bike on an online second-hand trading platform (平台). After searching online for a long time, I finally found a bike. The pictures showed it in good condition, and the price was very low. The seller said that it had no big problems.
When I met the seller, I checked the bike. It looked pretty good. However, as I took it for a short test ride, I found that the brakes (刹车) didn’t seem to work properly. The seller told me that it could be easily fixed. Finally, I decided to buy it.
On my way home, I took the bike to a local bike shop to get it fixed. The repairman told me that even if the brake problem wasn’t big, it would still cost me some money to fix it. This cost made me realize that buying second-hand things may not always be as cheap as I thought.
My experience of buying a second-hand bike was a mixed one. On the positive side, it offered the chance to own a special thing at a lower price. On the negative (消极的) side, the quality problems and unexpected (意料之外的) costs were also things I had to face.

Animals are our good friends. It’s important to protect them. They help keep the ecosystems balanced and make our world better.
However, animals are in danger now. It is difficult for them to have babies. They don’t have enough food to eat or places to live. Moreover, air and water pollution also make animals live hard. Natural disasters can also be a problem.
We must take action now. The government should make laws to protect animals and build more nature reserves. As students, we can tell people the importance of protecting animals and never buy things made from animals.
