Growing up, I disliked writing. It was the last thing I wanted to do and it’s one reason why I pursued science in the first place. In high school, I hated writing essays. For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my disordered thoughts into fluent sentences and I often received papers marked with lots of corrections. I began to wonder if I was simply not cut out for writing. And that was OK. I didn’t have to be good at everything.
I focused instead on my love for math and science. I took comfort there, knowing objective truth could be found if I searched methodically. In college, I studied engineering and joined a research lab to gain hands-on experience. My first project was to improve the efficiency of a magnetic component. Despite initial disappointing results, I continued through many designs. Eventually, we developed a design that halved energy losses. I was delighted — until my professor told me to write that research paper.
I knew that if I wanted to become a researcher, I would need to spend time penning papers. But I was scared of failing. In a panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab for help. We set a goal for the paper, and I carefully wrote an outline. But when I asked him for feedback (反馈), I soon found the paper covered in red marks. He explained that red didn’t mean I was a bad writer. Writing isn’t a one-and-done thing. It requires revising your work, often several times. Suddenly it occurred to me, “Hadn’t I done the same thing when I was searching for an efficient design ”
I polished my paper’s outline into sentences and paragraphs, guided by feedback. Though my first draft wasn’t perfect, with help, I enjoyed the process of improving it. Writing has since become one of my favorite parts of research, helping me organize my thoughts. I’ve even started writing popular science articles, which I never could have imagined during my early struggles with essays.

A. Collecting. B. Reviewing. C. Composing. D. Polishing.
26. What did the author learn from his writing and research
A. Both require trial and error. B. Both need inspiration and teamwork.
C. Both are about following fixed rules. D. Both are stressful and time-consuming.
27. What is the author’s attitude toward writing now
A. Bored. B. Uncaring. C. Ambiguous. D. Enthusiastic.

The rich aroma of freshly roasted coffee filled the air inside a quaint stone cabin in the eastern Chinese village that houses Frank Sterzer’s café: Bamboo Coffee Roasters.
After more than 20 years as an engineer and executive with leading automobile companies in Germany and China, Frank has found a new calling and fulfillment in the village of Maoli near Ningbo in Zhejiang province. Inspired by his lifelong love of coffee, a passion for roasting beans prompted Frank to turn what had been a hobby into a thriving business. “Zhejiang’s countryside has excellent infrastructure and beautiful landscapes, and I find it the ideal place to start my business,” Frank says. Maoli is located less than a 30-minute drive from the Ningbo city center, striking a pleasing balance between urban convenience and rural tranquility.
For Frank, the experience of sipping a cup of coffee while enjoying a slice of handmade cake and gazing at the countryside, captures the type of serene lifestyle he hopes to share with visitors. “Bamboo Coffee Roasters is a place to share the charm of this mountain village with visitors from all over the world,” he explains.
The café is named after the abundance of bamboo around Maoli, while its logo was inspired by a photograph Frank took of a nearby bamboo forest. He has also created a small coffee factory behind the shop front, where excellent beans from around the world are neatly stacked next to gently humming roasting machines. He roasts 10 metric tons a year. All these have become key components of the café’s success.
Since opening in June 2024, Bamboo Coffee Roasters has quickly become a popular destination, attracting visitors from near and far including international travelers taking advantage of China’s expanded visa-free policies. Frank’s own family took advantage of this policy, with his mother and siblings visiting last year.
Before the Spring Festival, the café was welcoming guests from allover, including nearby cities like Hangzhou and Shanghai. “We came to Ningbo for local delicacies and business, purchasing local produce. A new study from Nottingham Trent University (NTU) indicates that people who are more facially expressive are generally more likable and socially successful. The research, which analyzed over 1,500 natural conversations, suggests that complex facial muscle movements can strengthen social bonds and improve social interactions.
In the initial phase, researchers engaged with 52 participants in video calls designed to get a range of everyday situations, such as humor, embarrassment and conflict. The participants were further challenged to maintain a still face while their partners attempted to stimulate movement, testing their ability to control facial expressions.
Following these interactions, the participants recorded short videos, where they aimed to achieve specific social goals, like disagreeing with someone but without being disliked. These clips of videos were then rated by over 170 independent observers, assessing the readability of the emotions and expressions displayed.
The researchers applied the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), a method for measuring facial muscle activity, to evaluate each participant’s expressivity (表现能力). Afterwards, the study extended to analyze an existing database of natural video conversations between 1,456 strangers, where the participants rated their conversational partners’ likability. The study revealed that individuals who were more expressive were more likable by both independent observers and their conversation partners. Additionally, these expressive individuals were easier to read and more skillful at using facial behaviors to achieve their social goals.
“This is a study to examine facial expression in real-world interactions,” said the study’s lead author, Eithne Kavanagh. “Our evidence shows that facial expressivity is related to positive social outcomes. It suggests that more expressive people are more successful at attracting social partners and building relationships. It also could be important in conflict resolution.” The research highlights the significant role which facial expressions play in successful social interactions.
32. How did the researchers examine the participants’ ability to control facial expressions
A. By asking them to make complex facial muscle movements.
B. By asking them to watch humorous videos and keep a still face.
C. By having them use facial behaviors to achieve their social goals.
D. By having their partners try to make them produce facial movements.
33. What were the participants asked to do after the first stage
A. Rate the videos of other participants. B. Engage in further social interactions.
C. Assess the readability of their own emotions. D. Record short videos under specific conditions.
34. What can we learn about the FACS
A. It is a tool to assess facial muscle activity. B. It decides the social success of individuals.
C. It improves the likability of facial expressions. D. It is a method for promoting participants’ likability.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. FACS: A New Method for Social Science B. Facial Expressions: Important for Social Success
C. The Development of Facial Muscle Movements D. The Way to Be Likable and Socially Successful

Everything about moving day was a puzzle. I didn't know anything about our new building on a new street. Our old life was broken into pieces and packed up in piled boxes. I wondered if it would ever fit back together again.
Mom introduced me to our new neighbours, the Chens. Mrs Chen worked with Mom at the job she'd just started. Mr Chen was a famous craftsman(匠人) from China.
Mom said it was a fresh start, but it felt broken to me. I just wanted things to go back to how they had been before.
After the first day at my new school, I walked home alone. Mom had told me she had to work. I was still hoping she'd meet me after the bell. I had to open the door myself with the new key. I felt a bit hungry and went straight into the kitchen, ripping tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate. My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground.
“Benjamin” cried Mom from the doorway. I didn't hear her come in. “What just broke ” she asked, kneeling to pick up the pieces. In her hands, I recognized the shattered pieces. It was Grandma's bowl. “I can't believe you broke this,” she said.
“Well, I can't believe we have to live here now! I can't believe I have to switch schools, and I can't believe you didn't even meet me after my first day” I ran into my room, slamming the door behind me.
The broom swept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom's bedroom door closed behind her. I sneaked out into the kitchen and found the fragments in the dustbin. There were so many pieces in here, but maybe I could put them back together. Turning the pieces, I tried to match them, but this bowl would never look the same again.
“I'm sorry I yelled,” said Mom, as she opened her door. “Please just throw out the pieces. We can't make a fresh start with broken things.”
As I wandered down the hall, Mr Chen was emptying his garbage.
