Hi Yaming ,
One more week to go! I’m so excited to see you. I’ll meet the Zhaos as soon as I land in shanghai. I’ll be staying with their family for two weeks, and I’m a little nervous! Mr and Mrs Zhao are both in their forties, and they have a son who is younger than me. His grandmother also lives with them.
Could you give me some advice Should I bring a gift In America, we usually bring the host something small, like food. Is that a good idea Also, what are the right table manners What are some good conversation topics in China Is there anything else I should know I’m worried about doing something silly. It could give people the false impression that I’m a rude person. First impressions are so important that I don’t want to say or do anything wrong!
I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon!
Cheers,
Tina

Hi Tina,
So glad to hear about your upcoming trip! Don't be nervous— Chinese hosts are generally very understanding with foreign guests. Here's some advice.
Bringing a gift is necessary. Something from America or nice tea would be perfect. Remember to use both hands when presenting it.
Sample
For table manners, you should wait for the elders to eat first. Try all dishes offered, and avoid sticking chopsticks upright in plimenting Mrs. Zhao's cooking will be much appreciated.
Good conversation topics include food, Chinese culture, and school life. It's best to avoid politics or private information. Showing interest in their son's studies or the grandmother's health would be thoughtful.
A few extra tips: take off your shoes when entering the house, and remember that being respectful to elders is highly valued in Chinese culture.
Most importantly, relax and be yourself! Your thoughtful nature already shows you're a wonderful guest. The Zhao family will surely appreciate your efforts.
Have a fantastic time in Shanghai!
