Dear William,
I'm thrilled to hear about your school's plan to introduce Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
culture. I truly wish my advice would be of much help to you.
For the event, you could start with a lecture by a TCM expert. They can vividly explain the basic
theories like Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, and share common TCM treatments. Another great idea is
to set up a hands-on area where students can try making their own herbal sachets. It's not only fun but
also gives them a taste of TCM applications.
I sincerely hope the event will be a huge success and that students will develop a deep love for TCM
culture.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Just then, their coach stepped onto the court. Speaking calmly but firmly, he reminded them that
winning was not the only goal. True sportsmanship, he said, meant respecting each other, learning from
mistakes, and staying united. Gradually, the players calmed down, their anger turning into reflection.
They realized they had fought bravely and would come back stronger. A fire was lit inside them. Their
hands came together in a powerful team cheer. They shouted, “We are Class 1! We never give up!”
Returning to the classroom, they decided to do something special together. The loss still hurt, but
now it became a source of power. They set a new goal—to train even harder for next season. They made a
training plan, signed their names on it, and stuck it on the wall. “This is just the beginning!” one of them
shouted. Determination filled the room. Though they had lost the game, they had won something
greater—an unbreakable spirit that would carry them to future victories.

W: Mark, I heard you went to Myanmar after the earthquake. Did you go as part of an official
medical team
M: Actually, no. I went independently with a group of volunteers. The earthquake left so many
people injured. Local hospitals urgently needed extra hands. We helped treat people who
couldn’t get help before.
W: That must have been tough.
M: Yes. But when we saw the injured people walk again after treatment, we felt so happy. It
made all the hard work worth it.

W: It’s my pleasure. Oh, James. Hold on a minute. There is something I’ve been meaning to ask
you.
M: What’s that
W: In the past three weeks, you’ve started speaking up in class. You were so quiet last semester.
What made this change happen
M: Well, I studied hard every day and I know more answers than I used to. In the past, I kept
quiet because I didn’t really understand the material.
W: I must say that I, along with several of your other instructors, am very impressed with how
you’ve changed recently. Be sure to keep up the good work.
M: Thanks for the vote of confidence. Anyway, I guess I should leave. I have a P.E. class now.

M: What made you become a sports presenter, Maria
W: I’ve always loved sports — like training the women’s football team at college. A guy who
worked for a newspaper came to interview me, and he suggested I make a good sports
presenter. That’s where I started. Then I did a tour of a television studio to see what it was
like.
M: I see! How did you prepare for your first time on live TV
W: I was nervous! I went for a long run, which made me feel calmer. Afterwards, I felt really
uncomfortable seeing the recording of myself, although I’m used to it now.
M: What are your concerns when appearing on TV
W: For me, it’s suddenly not knowing what I’ve planned to ask next when I’m talking to
sportspeople. Some presenters make mistakes when they’re trying to say long names and
things, but that hasn’t happened to me.
M: I hear you’re doing a new TV program soon.
W: Yes. I got the idea from watching kids in my hometown doing amazing new sports like
underwater basketball. So I’m going around the country, having a go at some of these
activities.

Welcome to this week’s edition of What’s Playing. A new play, The Calling, is scheduled
to open to the public tomorrow. I was part of a group of critics who were invited to watch
yesterday’s final rehearsal before the official opening. The Calling is about a young boy growing
up in southern Texas, who has a love of movies and acting. After traveling across the country for
many years, he finally finds himself in Los Angeles, where he hopes to fulfill his dream of
becoming a star. Unfortunately, the storyline feels old, and there are no surprises to save the day.
The only positive aspect is the performance of newcomer Kevin Winston. Winston has appeared
in a few short films, but he makes a strong impression in his first stage performance. He can’t
save the whole play, but he does provide some hope for good things to come. For our listeners
who still want to see The Calling, you can buy tickets by visiting the website.2026 届高三英语学科模拟考试

Actions to reduce food waste
When Tayshan Hayden-Smith was growing up in London public housing, he dreamed of becoming a football
player, and the family’s small garden became his training ground. He improved his skills in his mother’s flower
beds. For a time, in the backyard and in his heart, football was everything, and by the time he was 20, he was
playing professionally in Austria.
Then, on a June evening in 2017, he got a text from his sister: a picture of Grenfell Tower, the housing project
across the street from their home, consumed by a fire. “All my friends were in Grenfell Tower and the surrounding
area,” he says. “That was the moment I decided I wasn’t going to extend my contract and I needed to be at home.”
When Hayden-Smith moved back to London, he sought to bring comfort to his old neighborhood, and found
inspiration in his mother’s garden. An overhead highway runs through the community, and underneath it,
Hayden-Smith found a plot of land covered with garbage. He and his partner began cleaning and planting it, and
others joined in. For a neighborhood struggling after destruction, the little plot of land beneath the highway became

a symbol of regrowth. Hayden-Smith and his friends named it the Grenfell Garden of Peace.
Soon they would transform five other blighted (疏于治理的) spaces into public gardens, and Hayden-Smith
realized he’d grown into an activist. He launched a new nonprofit called Grow to Know in 2020. The organization is
devoted to making green spaces more accessible to underprivileged people and educating a diverse, new generation
of outdoor activists.
insects that threatened the profitability of sugar plantations. Unfortunately, the toads never got a taste for the insects.
They did, however, turn out to be poisonous to predators (捕食者), especially snakes.
The story of the cane toad is a classic example of an ecologically destructive invasive (入侵的) species. In the
short term, anyway. But the long term might be different. In 2004, researchers discovered that Australian snakes
with a lot of exposure to the toads in their habitat were trending toward smaller mouths — mouths that made them
unable to eat the largest, most poisonous toads. Instead, those snakes could successfully prey on smaller, less
poisonous young toads.

To achieve this, we have to tap into things that young people are already engaged in,” Hayden-Smith stresses.

If Nike did a campaign and the first hundred people who come to this event get football boots, I’d be the first one
there. How do you create that same feeling around nature and flowers and gardening ”
While, theoretically, eradicating an invasive species ought to be cheaper than managing it or adapting to it,
simply being “native” or “invasive” isn’t enough to tell you whether a species should be eradicated.
We have many examples of the relationship between invasive species and their new home environments
functioning in ways that might not guarantee an automatic eradication policy. The endangered bird, the
southwestern willow flycatcher, nests successfully in invasive tamarisk plants. Invasive trees in Puerto Rico do a
better job of establishing forests on heavily degraded former lands than do native trees. Invasive birds help spread
the seeds of native plants around the Hawaiian Islands.
There’s a reason that working with plants is so meaningful, Hayden-Smith thinks. “In the garden,” he says,

boundaries and barriers come down.”

C. A memorial to fire victims.

D. A sign of hope and recovery.
The ability of invasive species to adapt and the ability of invasive species to be beneficial as well as harmful
have led a handful of scientists to begin speaking out about the possibility of handling invasive species in a different
way. Instead of jumping immediately to eradication, they suggest, the ideal course of treatment should, at least,
begin with a more thorough examination of the full range of impacts each invasive species has on its new home.
As biologist Mark Davis wrote in the journal Nature, “Nearly two centuries on from the introduction of the
concept of nativeness, it’s time for conservationists to focus much more on the functions of species, and much less
on where they originated.”

Developing this skill requires practice. It involves pausing before reacting, assessing situations objectively, and
consciously choosing productive responses. Over time, this approach becomes habitual, leading to better outcomes

can always control how we respond—and that makes all the difference.

C. Ignoring minor issues can lead to bigger ones.
D. Positive reactions weigh over the problem itself.
4. What is the significant value of Festinger's Law
A. It helps people better address life's challenges.

C. It provides useful guidance for different tough situations..
D. Protecting species based on their native origins.

Have you ever noticed how some people seem to handle difficulties calmly while others let small problems ruin
their entire day This difference often comes down to how we respond to challenges. American social psychologist
Leon Festinger proposed a famous theory later known as "Festinger's Law", which states that 10 percent of life's
events are beyond your control, but 90 percent are within your control.
To explain this, let's examine two events. First, imagine a business professional who has an important
presentation. On the way to work, they spill (洒) coffee on his shirt. If he reacts with depression, rushes angrily, and

arrives hurriedly, his presentation may suffer from failure to concentrate. Now, consider an alternative response: he
calmly cleans up, changes clothes, and uses the extra time to review his notes. The initial problem is the same, but
the outcomes differ dramatically because of his reactions.
A. The benefits of reducing stress.
B. The impact of immediate reactions.
D. The methods to practice Festinger's Law.
C. The desire to control personal feelings.
The influences of Festinger's Law extend beyond individual situations to interpersonal relationships as well. In
family conflicts, for instance, an unpleasant response to a minor disagreement can increase tensions, while a patient,
understanding approach often leads to resolution. Similarly, in team projects, how members respond to setbacks—
whether with blame or constructive problem-solving—can determine the group's ultimate success.

When a conversation becomes emotionally intense, most people instinctively react in one of two ways: they

Catch the signs early. Flooding rarely hits all at once. It builds in small ways. The key skill is learning to

making things worse. Use breaks to stay grounded. A break gives both people space to return to a more thoughtful
