Favorite Books for Young Readers The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses by Paul Goble
(For ages 5 to 8)
Everywhere you look in The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses, there’s a tiny, precise and
lovely detail—a plant, a bird, a lizard, a shell and of course the great horses. This story of a Plains Indian girl who runs away with a band of wild horses, and eventually becomes one of them, won

the Caldecott in 1978. The recognition was well-deserved for its insightful portrayal (描写) of the bond between the human spirit and the wilderness.
Hello Lighthouse by Sophie Blackall
(For ages 4 to 8)
Waves roll by, seasons come and go, keepers tend to their duties, and through it all, the
lighthouse stands tall, sending its light out into the darkness, signaling hello to all the ships at sea. The Caldecott winner Sophie Blackall does a significant job showing the timeless nature of
lighthouse life—and the change that’s coming.
The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander and Kadir Nelson
(For ages 6 to 9)
One of the most—if not the most—beautiful books on this list. Kadir Nelson’s fancy,
photorealistic paintings pair with Kwame Alexander’s powerful words for a tribute (致敬) to

author and an artist,” Nelson said.
Harlem by Walter and Christopher
(For ages 9 and up)
This poem by Walter Dean Myers—a revered elder of children’s literature—celebrates Harlem, where he grew up, full of“ colors loud enough to be heard” and songs first heard in the villages of“Ghana/Mali/Senegal”. His son Christopher’s vivid illustrations, part paint and part collage (拼贴画), don’t talk down to kids, instead pulling them into a lively city.
21 .What is the focus of the book The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses
A .The girl’s strong connection with nature.
B .The girl’s artistic talent in drawing horses.
C .The girl’s expertise in training wild animals.
D .The girl’s close relationship with her family.
22 .Whose book is recommended for 4-year-old kids
A .Paul Goble’s. B .Sophie Blackall’s.
C .Kwa me Alexander and Kadir Nelson’s. D .Walter and Christopher’s.

Have you ever struggled with a task because two arms just weren’t enough If so, you
might like a new device that can really lend a helping hand. You wear this robotic arm, and then control it with the muscle you use to breathe.
Currently, the robotic arm is worn in the middle of your chest, but it can also be placed
above your shoulders or at your side, depending on what you want to do with it. Engineer Giulia Dominijanni, part of a team at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne ( cole
Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL), helped create the device.
In the past, robotic arms were designed to replace lost arms, with brain signals controlling them. This new device allows users to control an extra arm while still using their real arms. For this reason, the team designed it to be controlled by breathing.
The robotic arm can sense the movement of your diaphragm (膈膜), the muscle that helps you breathe. When you breathe in, the robotic arm stretches; when you breathe out, it retracts (缩回). Breathing normally keeps the arm in the same position.
Before making the actual arm, the EPFL team created a virtual reality (VR) model.
Volunteers learned to control this virtual third arm using breath sensors. The tests showed that people could easily look around and talk while using the arm.
After successful VR tests, the team built a simple robotic arm that functions like the virtual one. Early tests showed that users could comfortably operate the extra arm alongside their own
arms.
However, researchers are still exploring how well people can control this robotic arm
without affecting the use of their natural arms. Jacob George, a director at the University of Utah’s robotics center, notes, “When you’re adding something new on your body, it’s unclear how much the brain can do with that. But in time it becomes possible to control the new arm well.” And
scientists at EPFL believe that understanding this could benefit those with disabilities or people

A .They feature affordable prices. B .They are operated by breathing.
C .They can deal with our health issues. D .They are controlled by brain signals.
25 .Why did the EPFL team create a VR model
A.To test the newly-invented arm’s actual function. B.To figure out how the robotic arm work.
C .To attract more volunteers. D .To cut its production cost.
26 .What is Jacob’s attitude to the robotic arm
A .Uncaring. B .Doubtful. C .Positive. D .Unclear.

Research in human-vehicle interaction has shown even systems designed to automate
driving are far from being error-proof. Recent evidence points to drivers’ limited understanding of what these systems can and cannot do as a contributing factor to system misuse. A recent study
tackles the issue of over-trusting drivers and the resulting system misuse from a legal viewpoint. It looks at what the manufacturers of self-driving cars should legally do to ensure that drivers
understand how to use the vehicles appropriately.
One solution suggested in the study involves requiring buyers to sign end-user license
agreements (EULAs), similar to the terms and conditions that require agreement when using new software products. But this is far from ideal. The agreement may not provide enough information to the driver, leading to confusion about the nature of the requests for agreement and their
implications. Further, most end users don’t read EULAs. A 2017 study shows 91 percent of people agree to them without reading. Among young people, 97 percent agree without reviewing the
terms.
The issue is that, unlike using a smartphone app, operating a car has serious safety risks,
试卷第 6 页,共 15 页
whether the driver is human or software. And human drivers need to consent to take responsibility for the outcomes ofthe software and hardware.
“Warning fatigue” and distracted driving are also causes for concern. For example, a driver, annoyed after receiving continuous warnings, could decide to just ignore the message. Or, if the
message is presented while the vehicle is in motion, it could represent a distraction. Given these limitations and concerns, even if this mode of obtaining consent is to move forward, it likely
won’t fully protect automakers from their legal liability should the system malfunction (发生故障) or an accident occur.
Driver training for self-driving vehicles can help ensure that drivers fully understand system capabilities and limitations. This needs to occur beyond the vehicle purchase. Recent evidence
shows even relying on the information provided by the seller is not going to answer many
questions. All of this considered, the road forward for self-driving cars is not going to be a smooth ride after all.
28 .What do we learn from research in human-vehicle interaction
A .Automatic driving systems are by no means immune to errors.
B .Driverless vehicles are likely to be misused by some people.
C .Self-driving car manufacturers are not aware of the legal matters involved.
D .There is a long way to go before humans can interact with driverless vehicles.
29 .What is the problem with requiring buyers to sign end-user license agreements
A .End users, young and old alike, find the terms complex to interpret.
B .Most end users sign them without bothering to read the terms.
C .Many people are often confused by the wording of the terms.
D .Most end users do not understand the terms after reading them through.
30 .What would drivers do when they suffer from “warning fatigue”
A .Waste no time keeping the car moving. B .Rest a while to avoid fatigue driving.
C .Take no action despite repeated warnings. D .Take note of the message though fatigued. 31 .What should be done to help drivers fully understand system capabilities and limitations
A .Training them to be experts in vehicle automation.
B .Familiarizing them with the systems through training.
C .Broadening their knowledge of accident-prevention mechanisms.

D .Facilitating their access to the information provided by the seller.

The world of children’s publishing is tough. Print sales are struggling, and profits are thin. Because of this economic reality, many publishers lean heavily into “sure things”—like celebrity books, series, and popular IP projects.
Parents seek suitable books for their kids. Ben Okon, while enjoying reading with his son, found most books underestimated young readers. Instead of ABCs, he desired books on concepts like personal finance for kids. Nicole Filippone, whose daughter had sensory processing disorder (SPD), searched for books to make her feel accepted but couldn’t find any.
In the past, they might make up their own stories, tell them to their child at bedtime, and
leave it at that. But now, easy access to print-on-demand companies like Amazon KDP and
Ingram Spark has given parents a way to create the books they want. If they can’t buy it... they can write it!
Traditional publishers claim there’s low demand for such books. Are these parents losing money The answer is absolutely “No!” Ben’s books have been already sold almost $60,000 in preorders. Nicole sold thousands of copies, and has become an influencer in SPD with 350,000 followers across multiple platforms.
Parents need these children’s books for just a few short years—when their kids are at the
right age to learn from them! Traditional publishing moves so slowly that if the authors above had tried to go that route, their own kids would likely have been too old for picture books before they hit the shelves. When you’re a parent out to solve problems, you don’t have the luxury of being
patient!
The explosion of self-publishing has opened the door for unknown authors to create books that fill those gaps in the market that traditional publishers can’t or won’t fill. And parent authors are the very people who discovered those gaps in the first place. There are always more stories to be told.
32 .Why do many publishers focus on “sure things” according to the passage
A .To meet public demands. B .To attract renowned authors.
C .To handle the financial stress. D .To advocate popular IP projects.

34 .How does the writer illustrate the popularity of self-publishing books
A .By giving examples. B .By defining concepts.
C .By making comparisons. D .By presenting studies.
35 .Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A .New publishing hits the Markets. B .Parent authors help fill shelf Gaps.

In European terms, it’s barely a baby — but Boston is one of the oldest cities in the US. It has gnarled streets, a slow, rumbly subway and red-brick buildings that date back to the
revolution. But behind the history is a modern approach to city management that’s making life easier for its citizens — and it’s all thanks to .
Earlier this week, Uber, a successful car-booking platform, announced that it would its data with Boston, making it the first city in the US to receive data from the firm. Starting in two weeks, then updated every quarter, Boston will get zip codes in which Uber rides begin and end,
the timing of rides and the distance travelled.
Jascha Franklin-Hodge, the city’s chief information officer, says Uber’s data will help his team assess the impact of city development on residential , measuring commute (通勤)

The Uber data set will a wide range of others in Boston’s store. Like cities
around the world, it has collected data from its public transport system, cellphones and taxi
records to quietly transform and itself. For example, it is already using data from the
public transport system to understand the impact removing an overpass in south Boston is having on local residents. “Cities have used data forever really,” says Alan Wiig of Temple University in Philadelphia. “What’s now, what this announcement signifies, is the speeding up of

how quickly cities can use data.”
Other cities are also seeing the advantage in pooling data to make life for

solutions can make residents’ lives easier, but they can also give managers new insights (洞察) into their cities. Chris Osgood of the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics in Boston says wiring 320 downtown parking spots with occupancy sensors not just by letting drivers find open spots through an app called Parking but by helping the city managers see where they needed to change their policies.
Osgood and his team a number of spaces that were constantly occupied, and
reduced their maximum occupancy time from 4 hours to 2 hours. Other spots were underused, and had their maximum times bumped up .
“We have trash cans throughout the city that are sensors,” Franklin-Hodge says. “They can inform us in real time when they are getting full. As we analyse that data over time, it lets us where to put resources to collect trash.”
Franklin-Hodge says he expects more private companies to join Uber. “The city can’t just look inwards at its own databases,” he says. “It has to recognise that consumer services are
generating (生成) data that’s valuable to us. The Uber is the tip of the iceberg.”

Grandma Agnes is ninety-nine years old and still lives in the same house she’s lived in for more than sixty years. She was one of thirteen children raised on a farm, and now, she is rather set in her ways. For twelve years, Grandma Agnes enjoyed the company of her dog, Snoopy. The
black-and-white spotted mutt (杂种狗) was a constant presence in her home and yard. As time went on, Grandma Agnes began showing signs of dementia (老年痴呆). My family worked
together to keep her living independently yet safe.
试卷第 13 页,共 15 页
It was heartbreaking for my dad when he removed the battery from her car to prevent her from driving with her still-valid license. After that, every visit ended with Grandma insisting he buy her a new battery, claiming hers was “dead again.” Dad would no d and promise, though he knew she’d forget.
Three years ago, Snoop y passed away. My dad, Aunt Carol, and Uncle Ed tried to help Grandma understand. They held a small funeral in the backyard. Uncle Ed framed a photo of Snoopy with “Rest in Peace” written below and stuck it on the fridge. Yet during daily visits, Grandma still asked about Snoopy, accusing neighbors of stealing him because she “heard his barking.”
Caring for someone with dementia is emotionally exhausting. For years, Dad warned me before each visit: “She might not recognize you or your kids.” We’d patiently answer the same questions repeatedly. Grandma Agnes is still stubbornly independent, but she struggles to make sense of the world. Still, she insists on living alone and never stops asking about Snoopy.

A few months ago, Uncle Ed came up with a good idea and bought a robotic dog for
Grandma Agnes. The new Snoopy looked almost the same as the old one, with black-and-white fur and a wagging tail. When Grandma touched its head, the robot barked softly and rubbed
against her hand. “Oh, Snoopy! You’re back!” she cried, holding it close. From that day on, she “fed” it every morning and talked to it while sitting in the yard. Though the robotic dog couldn’t run or play, its programmed warmth seemed to comfort her. She stopped accusing the neighbors and even smiled more often.
Everyone was pleased that Grandma Agnes liked “Snoopy” a lot. Last Sunday, I visited her with Dad. She didn’t recognize me, but she cheerfully introduced her “good boy” to us. The

robotic dog sat beside her, its head resting on her lap as she hummed an old song. Dad whispered, “Technology may not cure her illness, but it gives her peace.” Watching Grandma gently stroke
the robot’s fur, I realized how something as simple as a machine could reconnect her to lost love and memories. Science, in its own quiet way, had become a bridge between her fading world and the care we longed to provide.
范文 2
A few months ago, Uncle Ed came up with a good idea and bought a robotic dog for
Grandma Agnes. When the lifelike, black-and-white spotted robotic dog was placed before her,
Grandma froze. Her eyes widened in shock. Then, a faint smile spread on her wrinkled face.
“Snoopy ” she softly murmured, reaching to touch its head. The dog barked gently and wagged its tail. Since then, it has become a constant companion in her life. She took it for walks around the
yard, chatting about farm days.
Everyone was pleased that Grandma Agnes liked “Snoopy” a lot. It’s heartwarming. She
showers the robotic pet with love, as ifit were the real Snoopy. The empty look in her eyes has
turned into a spark of joy. During visits, we often find her on the porch, the robotic dog at her feet, as she shares childhood stories. This simple yet smart idea has brought back companionship. Such is the meaning of technology, which gives us hope, showing that love and memories can shine
through, even with dementia.
