Maya Merhige is making her major waves in swimming. She is now the third-youngest
person to complete an athletic challenge known as the Triple Crown. At the age of 16, she swam 23 miles across the English Channel in the UK with a time of 11 hours, 39 minutes.
Merhige had already completed the other two Triple Crown swims. At age 14, with a time of 10 hours, 48 minutes, she became the youngest female to swim the 20-mile Catalina Channel in California. The next year, she completed the 20 Bridges swim in New York City, a distance of
28.5 miles, in 8 hours, 43 minutes.
Open-water swimming became her passion at age 9 when she got involved with Swim
Across America, a nonprofit organization that funds cancer research. “I’ve been feeling as I’ve
gotten older that nearly everyone is touched by cancer, and it’s become more important for me to raise money for this cause,” Merhige, now 17, told The Week Junior. Since she started, she has
raised more than $100,000.
One of her favorite swims was crossing the 28-mile Ka’iwi Channel in Hawaii. She swam it at age 15, making her the youngest person to do so. It took her more than 27 hours to complete it, and she faced strong winds and jellyfish.
Although the physical and mental challenges of her sport are difficult, Merhige says her
greatest fear is not finishing a swim. Now she sets her sights on completing the Oceans Seven by 2029, and with her Triple Crown swims, she has four more to go. As she considers the journey
ahead, Merhige said it helps to “constantly remind myself to stay in the moment.”
24 .What do we know about the Triple Crown
A .It is for young athletes. B .It is a charity event.
C .It is a swimming challenge. D .It is an indoor competition.
25 .How did Merhige’s involvement with Swim Across America influence her
A .It made her passionate about swimming.
B .It helped her overcome her fear of jellyfish.
C .It taught her how to swim in the open waters.
D .It inspired her to raise funds for cancer research.

Wimbledon’s tennis court has seen its share of rivalries (较量). But for David Almog, a behavioral economist at Northwestern University, the more fascinating rivalry is judges vs
machine.
How AI oversight affects human decision-making is an important issue. Drivers and traders already routinely see their poor judgment corrected by AI.
Much of this correction happens out of the public eye, making it hard to analyze. But,
according to Mr. Almog, “Tennis is one of the most visible settings where final decision rights are entrusted to AI.” Hence he and his colleagues studied nearly 100,000points from 700 matches
worldwide, both before and after the introduction of Hawk-Eye ball-tracking system in 2006.
Hawk-Eye, now used in most top tournaments, uses cameras around the court to create a 3D model of the ball’s track and display it on screens. Players can challenge calls, with
Hawk-Eye’s decision considered final.
The analysis from Mr Almog and his colleagues showed that Hawk-Eye oversight has
motivated human judges 8% less mistakes. Such an improvement is to be expected, the
researchers say, given the heightened watchfulness accompanying the threat of public shaming.
Most of the error reduction occurred during rallies (回合) that follow a successful serve (发球) and return. However, when examining serves — especially those landing within 20mm of the line — the error rate surprisingly increased. It turned out judges had switched strategies. Before
Hawk-Eye, judges were more likely to incorrectly call a serve out, but afterwards, they tended to let out balls go unchallenged. For every 100 mis-hit serves, post-Hawk-Eye judge left 39
unchallenged, compared to 26before.
This shift makes sense; missed faults are less destructive than wrongly calling “out,” which ends the point early and may cause dissent (异议) from players and crowds. It seems that human
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
judges take the less reputationally risky option, even if it leads to more incorrect calls.
Tennis’s clear outcomes offer a simple model for AI oversight. But Almog warns similar patterns likely occur in medicine and law. These industries must consider the social costs of
errors: judges may under-sentence, doctors over-diagnose. The effect of decision-making are far-reaching. Stay tuned!
28 .According to Almog, what’s the rivalry between judges and machine
A .Judgment accuracy. B .Rule observance.
C .Caution in match calling. D .Decision-making speed.
29 .What did Hawk-Eye lead to when dealing with serves
A .Few misjudged serves overall. B .More unchallenged near-line serves.
C .Players have more dissent. D .Judges trust their own calls more.
30 .Why did judges make a shift after introducing Hawk-Eye
A .To justify Hawk-Eye’s judgments. B .To lower reputational losses.
C .To speed up decision-making. D .To please players and crowds.
31 .What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A .Human judgment is always better than AI.
B .Hawk-Eye’s accuracy is beyond challenge.
C .Technology could replace human judgement.
D .Blind trust in AI may misguide decision-making.

At age 15, Zhao Yicheng has taken the speed climbing community by storm following his two stunning climbs of 4.68 and 4.65 seconds — unofficially faster than US athlete Sam Watson’s 4.74-second world record set at last year’s Paris Olympics.
Zhao’s record-breaking moment happened during a trial event for China’s national team on March 26. Since the event was not approved by the International Federation of Sport Climbing
(IFSC), his achievement was not officially recognized. Nevertheless, evidently Zhao has emerged as one of China’s most promising speed climbers.
Born in 2009 in Suzhou, Zhao’s journey with speed climbing began at age 5, when a friend dragged him to a climbing gym. What started as a weekly hobby soon occupied his weekends. By
试卷第 7 页,共 14 页
9, he had already won medals at multiple youth events. After winning the 2023 IFSC Youth World Championships in Seoul, South Korea, Zhao had to choose between school and sports. At that
time, he was a top middle school student, but he chose to dedicate four to eight years to speed climbing to see how far he could go.
In September 2023, Zhao joined the Shanghai speed climbing team. During the 2023-24
winter camp, his times improved from 5.4 seconds to 4.99, reaching the “sub-five” milestone. He kept that strong momentum in the 2024 season, clocking 4.93 seconds to win the national speed climbing championships in September.
Zhao credits his quick progress to scientific training and active thinking. After his first
winter training camp with the national team, he emerged transformed. “The team’s environment pushed me to train smarter. The nation’s best climbers are here, and every session demands your absolute best,” said Zhao. Between training sessions, Zhao reads history books, sci-fi stories, and a biography of basketball legend Kobe Bryant. When he can’t sleep, he watches climbing videos to study others’ movements. “Climbing isn’t just physical. It’s a mental game. Without active
thinking, you can’t reach the top level in any sport,” Zhao said.
For now, age rules stop Zhao from competing in international events, but he sees the delay as an opportunity to improve his performance. “Next year, I’ll compete internationally in peak
form to strive for honor for my country,” he told Xinhua.
32 .Why were Zhao Yicheng’s record-breaking climbs not officially recognized
A .Because the event was not admitted by the IFSC.
B .Because he was too young to qualify for world records.
C .Because his times were slower than Sam Watson’s record.
D .Because he competed in a national championship instead.
33 .What can be inferred about Zhao’s decision to focus on speed climbing over school
A .He wanted to break records immediately.
B .He prioritized his passion despite being a top student.
C .His family pressured him to pursue sports professionally.
D .He struggled academically and needed an alternative path.
34 .What contribute to Zhao’s rapid improvement in speed climbing
A .Natural talent and early training. B .Support from his school teachers.

C .International competition experience. D .Scientific training and mental discipline.

I worked at a local university and our office was staffed with a few student workers. One of the students was on a football team that needed a member. She overheard me talking about how I had always wanted to play football, but never got the chance. The student offered to let me come and try out.
I was excited and scared. Excited at the thought of doing something I had always wanted to do, but scared I was too out of shape and too old to keep up with athletic twenty-year-olds. There was no harm trying out, though. I agreed to be on the field for practice.
My husband and children thought I was crazy but I didn’t care. It was something I had to do for myself. It was a now or never moment.
My job at the university was secretary, so I spent all day there, sitting and typing. Doing
homework all evening after sitting all day caused a big loss to my health. My son was playing
high school football, my daughter took some dance classes and I had all the mom responsibilities too. Between going to games, dance classes, and house work, finding time for me seemed
impossible, but I knew playing football with kids would be the only chance.
I showed up with butterflies in my stomach and low expectations on the selection day. I
was slow and I was out of breath very easily, but my desire to do this made me drive forward.
Once the coaches and the players sized up my abilities, they would determine the position I’d
play. Surprisingly, no one else showed up to compete for that position, so without question, it was mine.
I couldn’t have been happier! They took my shirt size, number and my team name. I chose “Mama Platt” because it is what a couple of the students called me, and I chose my dad’s football number from high school: 74. I still remember the moment when I stood in a sport ing goods store picking out athletic shoes. Was this really happening I couldn’t believe it. These girls were
actually going to let me be a part of the team!

I started practicing early every day. I arrived early, jogging laps and stretching sore
muscles. My legs ached, and my lungs burned, but I kept going. Every drop of sweat reminded me that a big game was coming, and I had to be ready. Some younger players helped me with my
stance and catching. “You’ve got heart, Mama Platt,” one said after I finally caught the ball. That moment lit something inside me. With the first game of the season just around the corner, I trained even harder, hoping I could truly contribute to the team.
The first game of the season came. I stood on the field in my “Mama Platt” jersey, number
74 glowing. I could almost feel some skeptical glances, but I knew I had to focus on the game for my team, especially for myself. During the whole match, we work together, chase the ball
actively. The buzzer sounded as I goaled a ball. The whole team erupted in cheers. Teammates held me up, chanting “Mama Platt!” My family screamed from the stands, and I laughed, sweat dripping down my face. Finally, I was part of a team — and we’d won.
