US high school students take on decades-old murder cases
他们在社会学课堂上学习破解谋杀案
A group of high school students from Tennessee, US, are making a difference in a series of unsolved murder (谋杀) cases.
试卷第 3 页,共 14 页
Back in 2018, Alex Campbell, a teacher at Elizabethton High School, tasked his sociology class with a project: to solve a cold case, potentially (可能地) linked to a serial killer (连环杀手). Now, a new set of students have decided to pick it up where the other students left off and see
what new developments could be made, reported the local news network WCYB.
Elizabethton in northeast Tennessee is a small city. During the 1980s, police officers tried to look into the murders of multiple redheaded women whose remains were discovered in
Tennessee and nearby states. However, they never succeeded.
Campbell believed that revisiting these cases would not only make his sociology class more engaging for his students but also provide them with a meaningful mission. “The No 1 thing about being a good teacher is you’ve got to have the students interested in your subject,” he told Yahoo News. He also believed that doing the project would let students learn how to research and
understand how someone’s upbringing (教养) could impact who they become, which is a very appropriate (恰当的) topic for a sociology class.
The students talked to professional investigators (调查者), collected evidence (证据), and reconstructed an almost four-decade-old mystery to uncover the killer behind the murders. While the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has supported the student’s hypothesis (假设), no formal charges (指控) have been brought against the suspect (嫌疑人) as of yet.
“Even though the person we think might be guilty (有罪的) might not be around, these women still deserve (应得) justice,” Marlee Mathena, a senior student, said to WCYB.
Their efforts have become the focus ofthe iHeartRadio true crime podcast series titled Murder 101 – serving as an exemplary (典范的) demonstration of project-based learning and a reimagining of high school education.
21 .What can we know about Alex Campbell’s class project
A .It focuses on the study of serial killers.
B .It involves cases over the past 40 years.
C .It was inspired by a podcast series.
D .It has the support of crime investigators.
22 .What is the primary purpose of the project, according to Campbell
A .To help local police solve cold cases.
B .To engage students in sociological learning.
试卷第 4 页,共 14 页
C .To draw public attention to unsolved murders.
D .To investigate the psychology of criminals.
23 .What do the students believe is the significance of their project
A .Bridging the inequality gap.
B .Ensuring the suspect faces consequences.
C .Seeking justice for the victims and their families.
D .Improving their research and investigative skills.

My school has a big garden, and every class is responsible for taking care of a small part of it. Our class’s garden plot is near the playground, and we’ve been working on it since the start of the school year. Taking care of the garden has been a lot of work, but it’s also been a lot of fun.
At first, our plot was just a patch of dirt. Our teacher, Ms. Green, told us we could grow whatever we wanted. We had a class discussion, and everyone voted to grow tomatoes, carrots, and sunflowers. Ms. Green said those were good choices because they’re easy to grow and we could eat the tomatoes and carrots when they’re ready.
The first thing we did was dig the soil. Some of us had never used a shovel before, and we laughed when the dirt flew everywhere. Then, we planted the seeds. Ms. Green showed us how
deep to put them and how far apart. She said, “Seeds need space to grow, just like people do.” We watered the seeds every day, and after about a week, we saw small green shoots coming out of the dirt. Everyone was excited. We took turns checking on them every morning.
As the plants grew, we had to pull out the weeds that grew around them. Weeds take water and food from the plants, so we wanted to make sure our tomatoes, carrots, and sunflowers got
everything they needed. One day, we noticed some bugs on the tomato plants. Ms. Green said they were aphids, which are bad for plants. She showed us how to spray them with a mixture of water and soap, which is safe for the plants but keeps the bugs away.
Last month, we picked our first tomato. It was red and round, and we all took turns holding it. Then, we cut it into small pieces and shared it. It tasted so much better than the tomatoes from the store! The carrots are still growing, but they’re getting big. The sunflowers are tall and have
big yellow flowers that face the sun.
试卷第 5 页,共 14 页
Taking care of the garden has taught us about responsibility and patience. We learned that growing things takes time and effort, but it’s worth it. Every time we look at our garden, we feel proud of what we’ve accomplished.
24 .What is the writer’s class responsible for at school
A .Cleaning the playground.
B .Taking care of a part of the school garden.
C .Organizing school events.
D .Helping younger students.
25 .What did the class decide to grow
A .Potatoes, onions, and roses.
B .Tomatoes, carrots, and sunflowers.
C .Cabbages, beans, and daisies.
D .Apples, pears, and tulips.
26 .What did they do first to start their garden
A .They picked ripe vegetables.
B .They sprayed bugs with soap and water.
C .They dug the soil and planted seeds.
D .They built a fence around the plot.
27 .What did they learn from taking care of the garden
A .How to cook vegetables.
B .Responsibility and patience.
C .How to sell plants.
D .How to use garden tools.

A school in Shaanxi has found an innovative way to teach its students
原来思政课可以很“好玩儿”!
“In 1840, with its ships and cannons (大炮), the British Empire breached (冲破) China’s ancient gates...” explained Cao Xinjie, as he tapped the classroom screen with his fingers. The 17-year-old from Qujiang No 1 High School in Shaanxi was acting as a “virtual museum guide”
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
for an ideological and political lesson (思想政治课), taking his classmates on a journey through the history of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Through interactive VR technology, the
struggles ofthe Chinese people for independence and liberation came alive before their eyes.
The students took a virtual tour of The Road of Rejuvenation exhibit at the National
Museum of China. This exhibition explores several historical eras experienced by Chinese people, starting with the Opium War in 1840.
The students found this VR learning experience highly engaging and way more fun than
regular textbooks. “Previously, abstract phrases like ‘The CPC is the backbone (中坚力量) of the Chinese revolution’ were difficult for us to relate to. However, immersing ourselves in the
museum’s photos, artifacts and stories offered us clear insight (见解) into why only the CPC could save China,” Cao told Teens.
Jiang Jiaomei, the course teacher, believes that the key to a more targeted and appealing ideological and political course lies in immersive learning and engaging activities.
For instance, Jiang likened the CPC to the most powerful “start-up team” in Chinese
history. Dividing the students into groups, she asked them to create a “business strategy” for the CPC’s founding, centering around its “entrepreneurial (创业的) background, goals and
competitive advantages”.
Cao’s classmate, 17-year-old Li Jiatong, found the comparison quite novel. “The struggle of the CPC does mirror that of an entrepreneurial team. By framing it that way, we can remember the CPC’s origin, aspiration (志向) and mission more vividly,” she said.
“Immersive interactions can fuel (激发) students’ enthusiasm, and through these innovative activities, they can easily absorb the knowledge,” said Jiang. “In this way, they could build a
stronger connection with the CPC and develop a greater sense of patriotism (爱国精神).”

Imagine a lively setting, full of laughter and curiosity. That was the scene and sounds of my classroom as I guided young minds through different adventures.
At our school’s learning center, I led a program that ranged from simple art projects and
sports games to hands-on science experiments. We painted colorful pictures, kicked soccer balls across the field, and watched vinegar and baking soda fizz in clear cups. Every activity turned our classroom into a place for discovery and fun.
I enjoyed spending time with the kids I was helping and learning alongside. That was my favorite part about the program. One memorable class involved making bubbles (肥皂泡). The children ran after the floating bubbles, shouting with delight, and I felt like a child again, caught up in their wonder. That simple game showed me how small joys can turn a normal day into
something special.
The positive effect of our classes rippled throughout the school. Other students noticed how happy our classroom sounded. They began to join in, and soon the entire learning center felt
warmer and more welcoming.

However, as I started this journey, I found it hard to stay calm when the children became
noisy. But as I spent more time with them, I learned patience, kindness, and how to show empathy (同理心). I discovered that gentle words and clear instructions could turn disorder into order. My “little friends” taught me as much as I taught them.
The energy and joy that filled the room not only impacted the children but left a
long-lasting mark on me. They made me realize that education goes beyond textbooks. It’s about caring for each student, fanning their curiosity, and discovering the wonders ofthe world, one
activity at a time.

C .To highlight the joy of teaching kids.
D .To explain the importance of teamwork.
34 .What does the underlined word “rippled” in paragraph 4 mean
A .Shook. B .Spread. C .Differed. D .Ended.
35 .What can we learn from the author’s story
A .Teaching is learning. B .Think twice before you act.
C .Hard work pays off. D .A miss is as good as. a mile.

The announcement of the “Go Green” campaign brought a wave of joy that ran through the students. The room was filled with discussions and activity as soon as Miss Tina left the class.
Everyone had ideas for the upcoming campaign.
The campaign invited the students to share their creativity through planning different
activities at nearby places that had lost their beauty due to pollution and climate change. It
required the students to participate in two groups. One group would work by the riverside and the other would revive a public garden.
Alena immediately expressed her interest in joining the former group. Asad joined the latter group with excitement.
On a bright Saturday morning, all the students, along with their teachers, excitedly reached their respective spots.
The riverbank had always been one of Alena’s favourite places. But the spot, once beautiful and peaceful, was now covered with litter. Plastic bags were floating on the river. There were
dried plants by the riverside, and the biodiversity was almost destroyed. This left all the students in great sadness. However, they were inspired by the motivation of restoring the place’s charm, making it clean once more.
All the kids brainstormed ideas before starting on their work. The students organised a
clean-up drive, wading (跋涉) along the banks and pulling the trash from the river with the help of nets with long poles. Colourful recycling bins along the riverside were set up, all labelled with
“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. They also designed posters and warning signs, showing how plastic

pollution was harmful for fish and other wildlife, and posted them along the riverbank at various places.
As for the other group, they selected the main city park, a popular public spot. But, over time, pollution had had a bad effect on the park and it had lost most of its greenery and there was litter everywhere.

W: About two years ago I went with my class on our first school trip — five days in Paris! There were about thirty of us and four teachers. We all went in one big coach from our school in London. The teachers told us to be at school at four thirty in the morning. Everyone was there on time, but the coach didn’t arrive until five o’clock and we didn’t leave until five thirty! We were very cold and tired.
Anyway, the coach was very comfortable and we watched a DVD and listened to some
music on the journey. We had some sandwiches and drinks with us, so we went straight to Paris without stopping. The hotel was very old, but our room was nice and the bed was great! I shared the room with three other girls.
When we went shoppingI tried to practice my French a few times but sometimes I didn’t know the right words and spoke in English instead! The shops were great — I bought lots of
presents, such as a dress for my mother, a bag for my dad and a T-shirt for my little sister!
I think what I enjoyed most was the boat trip. I took lots of photos of my friends and the wonderful art galleries. I was sad to leave Paris. I had a lovely time there.
