While you might find it hard to believe, many experienced educators are voicing support for shorter school days. Looking around the globe, you’ ll quickly see nations with leading

academic results practicing it
Professor Michael Baker of the University of Toronto conducted a study on school hours.
His research, involving 18 countries and over a million students, suggested that increased studying hours resulted in only slightly improved academic results. He argues for fewer school hours,
believing that a reduction could lead to less burnout in students.
The Finnish approach is often considered groundbreaking, with their students normally
outperforming those of the same age worldwide. The country s secret trick includes shorter school days coupled with more creative learning ways. Dr. Pasi Sahlberg, a Finnish educator and author, connects Finland’s academic success to these practices. He states that children should have
sufficient time for play, rest, and family, contributing to a balanced life.
Japan is another country on the high performing list, with its students regularly topping
international academic levels. They too operate with fewer school hours, choosing a more
content-rich, concentrated curriculum (课程). Dr. Yoshihiko Baba, an education policy adviser for the Japanese government, argues that this concentration of rich content over longer hours is a
valuable contributor to their success.
Still, many educators disagree, stating concerns about working parents, child management, and access to meals for lower-income (低收入) families. Yet, in a period when flexibility is key, these problems could be addressed by creative community solutions.
As information continues to pour in, schools should remain open to changing their schedules for the improvement of student well-being and academic performance.
You’ ve seen how shorter school days could be the key to improving student well-being and academic performance. It’s about making the hours count rather than counting the hours. So,it’s
time to reflect: Shouldn’t we be rethinking the school day length After all, if the goal is to
educate well-rounded, happy students who stand out academically, a shorter school day might just be the solution we’ ve been searching for.
28 .What did Michael Baker find in his research
A .Students concentrate more on philosophy.
B .Studying longer makes little difference.
C .18 countries support longer school hours.
D .Many students are suffering from burnout.

Last week, the Los Angeles Unified School District became the largest in the country to approve (批准) a districtwide cellphone ban (禁止). For teachers, this is great news. For many kids, however, it’s less welcome.
Smartphones will undoubtedly distract students’ attention from exploring the unknown or close reading Shakespeare’s plays. A 2023 study by Common Sense Media showed that teens
check their phones more than 100 times a day on average. On top of the hundreds of notifications (通知) lighting up screens and disturbing (扰乱) class lectures, teens now spend 4.8 hours on
social media each day.
Yet many parents remain wary of (持谨慎态度) banning phones during the school day. They are afraid that doing so would cut off the communication between them and their
children-not only when picking up and dropping off children, but also in the event of an
emergency. But that’s not enough of a reason to continue permitting device usage on campus.
Schools have managed to function without smartphones for centuries-without their absence causing any disaster. For concerned parents, equipping their children with traditional cellphones, also known as“ dumbphones”, might be the best option. Schools, meanwhile, could ensure they
have parental notification systems that work during emergencies.
Additionally, there are already schools that have benefited from the ban. At Bethlehem
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
Central High School near Albany, N Y, for example, academic progress has improved since a
cellphone ban was applied last fall. Students are less distracted and more focused on their studies. And in states such as Flotida and Indiana, cellphone bans are moving from individual schools to statewide policy (政策). California’s leaders are also considering a statewide policy of their own. All the better; the next generation should learn to enjoy the life of the mind, not just the screen.
32 .What is the purpose of paragraph 2
A .To question the necessity of phones in school.
B .To provide reasons for Los Angeles’ ban on cellphone use in schools.
C .To illustrate the consequences of teen’s phone addiction.
D .To present the problems with banning teens’ cellphone use.
33 .What does the author think of parents’ concerns about the ban
A .They are unnecessary and solvable.
B .They are reasonable and understandable.

A .It can really make a big difference.
B .Its effectiveness remains to be seen.
C .It is far from being a statewide policy.
D .Its application should suit local conditions.
35 .What can be the best title for the text
A .To Ban or Not to Ban: It’s Not a Simple Question
B .Keeping Phones from School It’s Not That Easy
C .No Phones in Schools: It Matters to Your Children
D .Want Your Kids Focused Put Your Phone Down First

classmates, she decided to run for (竞选) monitor. She was very happy when their head teacher, Mr. Johnson, announced she won. She dreamed of leading her class to be the best in the whole school.
However, problems came one by one. During self-study time, some classmates talked
loudly; some even played music. Jane would stand up and tell everyone angrily, “Be quiet! It’s
study time!” But her loud orders didn’t work. Tom, who was supposed to clean the blackboard,
often “forgot” . Jane shouted to remind him of his duty, which only made Tom quite embarrassed and unhappy. Jane also announced her plans for group study after school, expecting everyone to join in it. But obviously most students weren’t interested and complained about the extra “work”.
Jane felt more and more disappointed and helpless. Her direct orders seemed to push people away instead of bringing them together. Her dream of a top united class seemed to be broken by
the daily problems.

“dumbphones”, might be the best option. Schools, meanwhile, could ensure they have parental
notification systems that work during emergencies.(几个世纪以来,学校在没有智能手机的情况下也能正常运转——没有智能手机也没有造成任何灾难。 故选 A 项。

fast-paced world.
As for me, I integrate lifelong learning into my daily life. To begin with, I make it a daily habit to read books on various topics, ranging from literature to science, which can sharpen my critical thinking and affect my character shaping. Additionally, joining clubs allows me to gain hands-on skills such as gardening, bridging theory with practice. Moreover, field trips, like visits to museums, offer me an immersive learning experience and bring abstract knowledge to life.
What’s equally worth mentioning is that I also subscribe to e-learning courses to expand knowledge beyond the school curriculum.
In conclusion, in a world of constant changes, we should never cease to learn. Only by refreshing our knowledge and updating our skills continuously can we stay adaptable and
competitive.

67 . Mr. Johnson noticed Jane was in low spirits. He gently asked her to stay after class.
答案第 12 页,共 14 页
Sensing her disappointment, he shared his own early struggles as a teacher. “True leadership,” he said softly, “isn’t about shouting orders. It’s about respect and teamwork. Try listening more and talking with your classmates.” Jane felt a little hope as Mr. Johnson encouraged her to find wiser ways to win their trust. His words were like a ray oflight, brightening her confusion. She realized she needed to change her methods to bring everyone together.
With a clear mind, Jane returned to her duties in a new way. Instead of shouting out
commands, she arranged time to chat gently with her classmates and listen to their ideas and
suggestions. She also grouped the whole class for cleaning duties to ensure fairness. To encourage a quiet environment for self-study, she herself kept learning quietly, setting a good example.
Feeling their voices heard and understood, more students joined the study groups willingly.
Gradually, the noisy classroom became quieter. Hopefully, Jane came to realize it was respect and cooperation that could build up the strong team in her dream.
