John Cruitt, 62, spent decades tracking down his third-grade teacher.
He wanted to talk with Cecile Doyle about 1958 — the year his mother, who was seriously ill, passed away.
Her death came just days before Christmas. Cruitt had been expecting to go home from school and decorate the Christmas tree.
Doyle tells Cruitt at StoryCorps in Monroe, N. Y. “And you just don’t know how you’re going to go on without that person.”
When Cruitt returned to school, Doyle waited until all of the other children left the room at the end of the day, and told him that she was there if he needed her.
“Then you kissed me on the head,” Cruitt says. “And I felt that things really would be OK.” “Well, Cruitt, I’m so glad that I could be there with you for that time,” says Doyle, 82.
Decades after his mother’s death, Cruitt began to think more and more of Doyle. He finally wrote a letter:
Dear Mrs. Doyle,
If you are not the Cecile Doyle who taught English at Emerson School in Kearny, N. J., then I’m embarrassed, and you can neglect the letter. My name is John Cruitt, and I was in your
third-grade class during the 1958-1959 school year. Two days before Christmas, my mother passed away, and you told me that you were there if I needed you. I hope life has been as kind to you as you were to me.
God bless you.
John Cruitt
Doyle says his letter, which arrived in February, could not have come at a better time. Her husband, who passed away this August, was struggling with Parkinson’s disease.
“Well the funny thing is, when I finally wrote to you again after 54 years, I typed the letter
— I was afraid my penmanship wasn’t going to meet your standards,” Cruitt says as Doyle laughs. “John, what can I say — I’m just glad that we made a difference in each other’s life.”

As students draw near the midterm season, so do their feelings of anxiety and stress. With deadlines approaching, it’s easy to become wrapped up in essays and exams, but Arthur
Lyhne-Gold, a student at the University of Edinburgh, found the poems may be the means to calm that stress.
His idea blossomed from the concept of“the Poetry Pharmacy (药房)”, which was a shop that, instead of offering pills or prescriptions, gave customers books of poetry to solve their own problems. Calm, comfort, inspiration: whatever they were searching for, there was always a poem to help them find it.
Arthur brought this concept to campus, handing out 400 free poems with various themes to brighten the day of students. Students could always find him giving out poems outside the Main Library, especially when the midterms and Edinburgh winters got them down.
His project was rooted in personal struggles. During a study abroad year in Canada, he
battled loneliness and seasonal depression. Arthur said, “I tried medical recommendations like
light therapy but they weren’t as helpful. Instead, I found so much comfort in some songs, some
literature, and some poetry.” He then began to hang posters around campus with poems relating to
the theme of seasonal depression and decided to expand on the idea of “the Poetry Pharmacy” ,when he came back to the University of Edinburgh.
While many dismiss studies in arts as less useful as those in science, Arthur argues for the unique value of arts and poems. He explains that, “there is a tendency in Western medicine to
compartmentalise things: You have a cardiologist (心脏病医生), a dentist, but never someone
looking comprehensively.” On the contrary, as he claims, arts can arrange all the things and words to bring peace to people and cure their body as a whole. “In a way, poetry is medicine.”
24 .Who was “the Poetry Pharmacy” originally intended for

Imagine waking up feeling anxious and hopeless. You think, “I’ll never be happy. Nothing I do matters.” The more you focus on these thoughts, the worse you feel. But what’s really going on Are your thoughts causing your feelings, or is it the other way around
For centuries, people have debated the cause of emotional suffering. Is it childhood trauma (创伤) A chemical imbalance in the brain A lack of love and connection Every school of
psychology has its own theory, with hundreds of ideas but little conclusive proof.
Over 1,700 years ago, the Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus proposed a different theory.
He argued that it’s not life events that upset us, but our thoughts about them. This idea became the foundation of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT suggests that if you change the way you think, you can change the way you feel. It’s an exciting claim — but is it true We decided to test it using data from a new mental health app.
In our first study, we analyzed data from 290 testers of the Feeling Great app. Unlike
traditional studies that rely on broad, retrospective (回顾性) surveys (asking how you’ve felt over the past two weeks), our app measured users’ negative thoughts and feelings in the here and now, using new, extremely sensitive scales. This distinction is crucial. By tracking moment-to-moment
changes, we could test if negative thoughts (e.g., “I’m a failure”) actually cause negative feelings or ifit’s the other way around. On average, users who reduced their belief in their negative
thought to zero experienced an 87% reduction in seven negative emotions during their first
session. Our data strongly supports CBT’s central idea that thoughts shape emotions far more than emotions shape thoughts.
To ensure that our findings were solid, we conducted a second independent study with
1,393 users of an AI-enhanced version of the app. The results Practically identical. Interestingly, with the larger sample size, we did detect a small but statistically significant effect of emotions
influencing thoughts — but the effect was barely detectable and far weaker than the impact of
thoughts on feelings. This suggests that emotions can sometimes influence thoughts, but the effect is minor in comparison to the power of thoughts to shape emotions. And that’s a discovery
Epictetus would have been proud of.
28 .What is the central idea of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) discussed in the article
A .Changing how you think can affect how you feel.
B .Life events are the main cause of our emotional struggles.
C .Childhood trauma is the root cause of emotional distress.
D .Emotions shape thoughts more than thoughts shape emotions.
29 .What was different about the Feeling Great app study
A .It focused on physical symptoms.
B .It tracked thoughts and feelings in real-time.
C .It asked users to recall past emotions.
D .It tracked emotions over a long period.
30 .What did the second study show
A .Users’ emotions were unchanged.
B .Emotions greatly affect your thinking.
C .Thoughts and emotions are unrelated.
D .Thoughts have a stronger effect on emotions.

Drawing inspiration from the Dallas-based Daddy Stroller Social Club (DSSC) — a support network for fathers — Brandon Shaw composed an 83-page typewritten letter that was addressed to his father. From the Blacklit bookstore, Kalvin Bridgewater led 15 dads in an emotional event
where the men dug into what they hated, loved, misunderstood and appreciated about their fathers as they grew up.
Launched by Bridgewater in 2021, DSSC started with roughly 30 fathers attending each gathering before surging in popularity following the viral success of two online videos in April 2024. Today, events regularly draw over 150 participants, fostering connections among dads as they share parenting journeys and offer mutual emotional support.
DSSC’s appeal is broad, attracting dads from various professions, including doctors,
engineers, and electricians. The group emphasizes emotional support, with members regularly
checking in on one another. As Shaw shared, the group provides a space where men can be open, asking, “How are you feeling ” Shaw, who joined the group when he first became a father, said it has made him more patient and understanding.
After earning certification as a birth doula (产妇陪护师) to better assist his wife through pregnancy (孕期), Bridgewater now also leads workshops for fathers to ensure DSSC allows
mothers some time for themselves. At a May event held by DSSC, planned right before Mother’s Day, mothers were given a break while fathers spent time bonding with their children.
Brandon Shaw described the experience as transformative, saying it helped him connect
with his own weaknesses, something he had previously kept hidden. He sent the letter he wrote to his father for Father’s Day. It will arrive soon. He said he doesn’t expect a response and just hopes his father reads it. As Bridgewater puts it, fatherhood is just about “being honest and sharing”.
32 .What can we learn about DSSC from the first two paragraphs

How to ‘Shift’ Big Feelings
Emotions are a fundamental part of what makes us human. The current wisdom in therapy (心理治疗) and on social media is that we should face negative emotions head on — and that if
we don’t, they will go bad inside of us. There’s no doubt that 56 (cope) with stressful
situations through long-term avoidance is harmful and can lead to more psychological distress, but
not all avoidance is bad.
Sometimes, it’s best not to choose between approaching or avoiding, but to shift between
57 two intentionally. Avoidance can allow the intensity of a negative experience 58 (decrease). It can also provide distance 59 helps us see the experience from a broader
perspective.
How can you figure out whether to avoid or to face up to your feelings Dr. Kross, an
emotion researcher, suggested asking yourself, “Is 60 I’m doing making me feel better about the problem in front of me Is this issue still a concern 61 I take some time away from it ”
If you find that shifting your focus brings you relief and your concerns don’t resurface down the road, that 62 (count) as working. You might say something regrettable at a party, for instance, but instead of worrying about it, you distract yourself by watching funny videos that night.
When we use the word “you,” it is almost only to refer to other people, Dr. Kross said. But when you use it on yourself, it’s a strategy 63 (know) as distanced self-talk, which can be a powerful way to regulate negative emotions. So instead of saying “I am stressed out,” which
may cause your heart to race, tell yourself “ 64 are stressed out.” This casts you 65 the role of“someone else,” and may help you feel more sympathy and understand others’ feelings.

It had been a beautiful afternoon, Rose had entered the nursing home with her 72nd
birthday cake, excited to see her friend Arthur, who was also 72 years old. For the past five years, they had been inseparable, sharing meals, finishing each other’s sentences and dancing to their
favorite song, Just the Tuo of Us, on Rose’s old radio.
But Arthur wasn’t where they usually met. He always greeted her with hand-picked flowers when she returned from the hospital. This time, he was nowhere to be seen. When Rose asked the staff, they told her that Arthur’s nephew had taken him away while she was at the hospital.
Heartbroken, Rose returned to her room, filled with memories of Arthur. She sat on the
edge of her bed, her eyes fixed on the wall where they had hung a picture of themselves during a picnic last summer. For two nights, she lay awake, the darkness of the room mirroring the
emptiness in her heart. Staring at the windows, she missed the days when Arthur was by her side.
She found a note from Arthur with an address in Springfield, Virginia, but the last part of the house number was unclear. Despite the uncertainty, Rose was determined to find Arthur. She held the radio tightly as she left, thinking it could be the way to find him.
Rose used her $50 savings to buy a bus ticket to Springfield. However, she ended up in the wrong Springfield, in Missouri, not Virginia. With only $15 left, she was in a difficult situation. However, Rose didn’t give up. She asked around at the bus station. A bus driver told her how to get to the right Springfield. Finally, she made it to the right Springfield, Virginia, but she still had no exact house number. Rose had an idea. She remembered that Arthur loved their favorite song,

There has been quite a pandemic developing, while most people’s attention has been on
covid-19. The lockdown has worsened a problem that has been spreading in many developed
nations for decades — loneliness. Loneliness increases the risk of heart disease, strokes and
dementia. Those who say they are lonely are likelier to be depressed five years later. In addition, lonely people can become more unfriendly towards others. Part of the problem results from
contemporary employment. Globally, two in five office workers feel lonely at work. This rises to 3 and 5 in Britain. Recreating a common society may be difficult when the pandemic ends. People may try the chance to be with their neighbors and colleagues for a while. But the trend is clear.
Technology means that people can get their entertainment at home and work there, too. It is
convenient, but it also leads to loneliness. Society will be handling this trade off for decades to come.

years, I typed the letter

根据第二段中“His idea blossomed from the concept of “the Poetry Pharmacy (药房)”, which was a shop that, instead of offering pills or prescriptions, gave customers books of poetry to solve their own problems. Calm, comfort, inspiration: whatever they were searching for, there was always a poem to help them find it. (这个创意源自“诗歌药房” 的理念——这家特别的店铺不提供药片或处方,而是为顾客奉上诗集,让他们在诗歌中寻找自己的答案。无论是平静、慰藉还是灵感,人们追寻的一切,总有那么一首诗能帮助他们找到)”可知,“诗歌药房”最初的目标人群是为个人问题而挣扎的人们。故选 C 项。
25 .细节理解题。根据第四段中“His project was rooted in personal struggles. During a study
abroad year in Canada, he battled loneliness and seasonal depression. 故选 A 项。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Arthur Lyhne-Gold, a student at the University of Edinburgh, found the poems may be the means to calm that stress (爱丁堡大学学生 Arthur

根据最后一段中“This suggests that emotions can sometimes influence thoughts, but the effect is minor in comparison to the power of thoughts to shape emotions. (这表明情绪有时会影响想法,但与想法塑造情绪的力量相比,这种影响微不足道。)”可知,第二项研究表明想法对情绪的影响更大。故选 D。
31 .主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是结合第三段中“Over 1,700 years ago, the Greek Stoic
philosopher Epictetus proposed a different theory. He argued that it’s not life events that upset us, but our thoughts about them. This idea became the foundation of cognitive behavioral therapy
(CBT). CBT suggests that if you change the way you think, you can change the way you feel. It’s an exciting claim — but is it true We decided to test it using data from a new mental health app.

Brandon Shaw described the experience as transformative,
saying it helped him connect with his own weaknesses, something he had previously kept hidden. He sent the letter he wrote to his father for Father’s Day. It will arrive soon. He said he doesn’t

Rose walked slowly down the street, her eyes searching for any sign of Arthur, her heart pounding with a mix of hope and anxiety. The warm melody seemed to be a beacon, guiding her through the unfamiliar place, as if leading her to a long-awaited reunion.
