知识点一　平方根的定义
1．一般地，如果一个数x的平方等于a，即x2＝a，那么这个数x叫作a的平方根，或二次方根．求一个数的平方根的运算，叫作开平方．
练习1　(教材P40例1变式)求下列各数的平方根：
(1)144; (2)0.004 9; (3)； (4)3；(5)104.

知识点二　平方根的性质
2．(1)正数有两个平方根，它们互为相反数．
(2)0的平方根是0．所以0的平方根只有一个，就是它本身．
(3)负数没有平方根．
练习2　已知一个正数的两个平方根分别是2x－1和x－5，求这个正数．
【解】根据题意，得(2x－1)＋(x－5)＝0，
解得x＝2，
所以2x－1＝3.又32＝9，
所以这个正数为9.

1．正数a有两个平方根，其中正的平方根叫作a的算术平方根．

知识点二　算术平方根性质的应用
2．(1)正数的算术平方根是正数，负数没有算术平方根.0的算术平方根是0.
(2)算术平方根的双重非负性：只有非负数才有算术平方根，且它的算术平方根也是一个非负数，所以算术平方根本身大于等于0，算术平方根的被开方数也大于等于0，即≥0，a≥0.
(3)一个正数的算术平方根的平方等于这个数本身，即()2＝a．
(4)一个数的平方的算术平方根等于这个数的绝对值，再根据这个数的正负去绝对值符号，即＝|a|．
