Learn all about chips made for AI
AI 芯片到底强在哪
In this age of rapid AI technological advancement, most people would know the name NVIDIA, a prominent (著名的) US technology company.
For a long time, NVIDIA has been dominating the graphics cards (显卡) industry with its advanced computer chips. Earlier this year, it became the first chipmaker to have a market worth of 2 trillion dollars (about 14.5 trillion yuan), showing fast growth due to its focus on developing chips specifically designed for running AI models.
What is an AI chip
The uniqueness of AI chips comes from the GPU, or graphics processing unit, which is the core (核心的) component of a graphics card. It was developed by NVIDIA in the late 1990s.
Initially designed for video game development, it presents surprising computing power. Unlike a
central processing unit (CPU), which can only process one piece of data at a time, a GPU can
process many pieces of data at once, which is called “parallel processing (并行处理)”. This allows a GPU to handle complex tasks, such as rendering (渲染) high-resolution graphics and processing large amounts of data, much more efficiently than a CPU.
Therefore, gamers buy GPUs to get a better video game experience since GPUs can help
create 3D characters and scenes that run smoothly and look realistic. People also saw the value of GPUs in solving complex calculations required for cryptocurrency (加密货币) mining. That’s
why the price of GPUs doubled or even tripled between 2019 and 2021.
Nowadays, as GPUs prove to be key to AI model training, more advanced AI chips are
being made for specialized AI panies such as OpenAI and Google use AI chips to
speed up and enhance (增强) their AI, machine learning, and deep learning algorithms (算法).
These chips are especially useful for improving the performance of large language models. With their excellent ability to handle numerous pieces of data at a time, the sky’s the limit for AI chips.
For everyday people, AI chips in our phones allow AI processing to happen on the device rather than in the cloud. This makes data processing faster, safer, and more energy-efficient.

Whether you’re looking for a job, a house, or a romantic partner, there’s an app for that. But as people increasingly turn to digital platforms in search of opportunity, Daniela Saban, an associate professor of operations, information, and technology at Stanford Graduate School of Business, says it’s time to take a critical look at the role of algorithms (算法). She explores how properly designed algorithms can improve the fairness and effectiveness of matching processes.
Saban has focused much of her research on what she calls “matching markets,” and she’s been particularly fascinated by online dating. In one study, she and several coauthors partnered with a major U.S. dating platform to explore how updates to the app’s algorithm could improve outcomes for romantic hopefuls looking to spark new connections.
Analyzing data from the app, Saban developed a model that not only prioritized potential
matches based on a user’s preferences but also took into account the likelihood that the person on the other side of the potential match would be interested. “I not only want to show you people that
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
you will like, I also want to show you people that will like you back,” Saban notes. Factoring in users’ history, activity levels, and this two-sided approach to preference led to a substantial
increase in matches during field experiments in Texas. “Our algorithm increased the number of matches by 27% in Houston and by over 37% in Austin,” Saban says.
Similarly, when working with the volunteer matching platform VolunteerMatch, Saban
identified an imbalance in how volunteer opportunities were being distributed. Some organizations were receiving an overwhelming number of sign-ups, sometimes even more than they needed,
while others struggled to attract any volunteers at all. By adjusting the search algorithm to
consider the number of volunteers an organization needs and has already received, Saban and her team were able to ensure a more reasonable distribution of volunteers across opportunities.
The technical details of algorithms may be complicated, but our commitment to fairness
and equity doesn’t have to be. If we want algorithms to work for good, we need to make conscious choices about how we design them.
26 .How do people search for opportunities nowadays
A .By learning algorithms.
B .By making use of online tools.
C .By developing critical thinking.
D .By analyzing the matching processes.
27 .What do we know about the model Saban developed for the dating app
A .It has attracted more users to the app.
B .It makes a user’s preferences a top priority.
C .It focuses on two-sided preference matching.
D .It presents more potential matches to the users.
28 .On what basis did Saban adjust the algorithm of VolunteerMatch
A .The preferences of the volunteers.
B .The popularity of the organizations.
C .A match between volunteer and organization types.
D .A balance between the demand and supply of volunteers.
29 .Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A .The Power of Digital Matchmaking

A new study published in the Journal of Remote Sensing has revealed that current satellite systems underestimate total CO2 emissions (排放) from U.S. thermal power plants (热电站) by 70% (±12%). The research, led by scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, highlights remote sensing technology, the core technology of current satellite systems, has important gaps, including poor spatial resolution, limited precision, and infrequent revisit cycles. It also suggests that next-generation satellites — designed with a resolution of 0.5km, a precision of at least 0.7 ppm, and daily monitoring capabilities — could reduce errors to below 20%. This advancement would significantly enhance global carbon accountability.
Thermal power generation accounted for 46% of the global increase in CO2 emissions in
2021, emphasizing its critical role in climate action. Current satellites, including NASA’s OCO-2 and OCO-3, have difficulty detecting small facilities, which make up 94% of coal-fired power
plants and 97% of gas-fueled plants. The study analyzed data from 1,060 U.S. power plants using 2021 satellite data and found that existing systems recorded only 29% (±12%) of total emissions, mainly from larger facilities.
The researchers used Gaussian plume models and high-resolution ERA5-Land
meteorological (气象的) data to account for time variability in plant operations and atmospheric disturbance, thus bettering emission estimates. The study also assessed approaching missions like the European Union’s Copernicus Anthropogenic CO2 Monitoring Mission (CO2M), set to launch in 2025 with 0.7 ppm precision, 4 km2 resolution, and 5-day revisit gaps, as well as China’s
TanSat-2, which is designed for 1 ppm precision and daily global coverage. Through considerable tools and profound research, these new systems could detect 52% and 44% of total U.S. power
plant emissions, respectively, marking a significant improvement over current capabilities.
Accurate emission lists are vital for the Paris Agreement’s Global Stocktake, which
measures progress toward limiting global warming to 1.5°C. “Current satellites provide unreliable data, weakening climate commitments,” stated Dr. Cheng Tianhai, the study’s corresponding
试卷第 8 页,共 14 页
author. “Next-generation systems could fill these gaps, making emissions measurable and actionable.”
30 .Which writing technique does paragraph 1 skip
A .Offering statistics. B .Making contrasts.
C .Giving a definition. D .Quoting a study.
31 .What causes inaccurate CO2 emission data
A .Recording methods are outdated. B .Monitoring facilities are lacking.
C .It is difficult to track small devices. D .It is hard to detect large equipment.
32 .What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A .The methods of precise monitoring. B .The advances in emission detection.
C .The increases in China’s CO2 emissions. D .The mechanisms of emission monitoring.
33 .Which words can best describe future satellite systems
A .Precise and reliable. B .Adaptive and portable.
C .AI-powered and super-fast. D .Predictive and data-based.

Vertical (垂直的) farming can date back to as far as 2,500 years ago. The hanging gardens of Babylon are considered one of the first examples of vertical farming. About 1,500 years later, the Aztecs developed a form of hydroponic (水培的) farming. 34 In the 1600s, French and Dutch farmers grew Mediterranean fruits on walls that maintained heat to help the fruits
survive colder conditions.
Controlled environments for food production are not new. 35 In 1999, Dickson Despommier and his graduate students explored the concept of vertical farming as a way to feed growing urban populations, leading to the broader use of the term in the 2010s and 2020s.
Vertical farming as a practice really didn’t become popular in the United States until around 2020, but it has been used in countries like Japan and the Netherlands for decades, according to
Koga, where greenhouses (the early form of vertical farming) in general are a much more integral

part of their culture and food production. 36
Today, much of the work in creating more nutrient-rich food through vertical farming
comes down to science. 37 Currently, researchers are working to create seeds that are best suited for an indoor, controlled environment.
38 For instance, FFAR invested some $7.5 million in the PIP consortium to
research varieties specific to indoor planting. “We’ve adapted plants through history,” Reich told Built In. “We need to try to see if we can adapt plants specifically to indoor agriculture, to see if that makes it more economically practical for the future.”
A .The research witnesses more than one sponsor.
B .This practice was copied by many other farmers.
C .They created floating boats to grow crops on waters.
D .Yet the term “vertical farming” caught on much later.
E .The older industry shapes vertical farming’s operations.
F .Conventional methods adjust seeds for weather and soil.
G .Thus, vertical farming is adopted to reduce greenhouse gases.

Grandma Agnes is ninety-nine years old and still lives in the same house she’s lived in for more than sixty years. She was one of thirteen children raised on a farm, and now, she is rather set in her ways. For twelve years, Grandma Agnes enjoyed the company of her dog, Snoopy. The
black-and-white spotted mutt (杂种狗) was a constant presence in her home and yard. As time went on, Grandma Agnes began showing signs of dementia (老年痴呆). My family worked
together to keep her living independently yet safe.
It was heartbreaking for my dad when he removed the battery from her car to prevent her from driving with her still-valid license. After that, every visit ended with Grandma insisting he buy her a new battery, claiming hers was “dead again.” Dad would no d and promise, though he knew she’d forget.
Three years ago, Snoop y passed away. My dad, Aunt Carol, and Uncle Ed tried to help Grandma understand. They held a small funeral in the backyard. Uncle Ed framed a photo of Snoopy with “Rest in Peace” written below and stuck it on the fridge. Yet during daily visits, Grandma still asked about Snoopy, accusing neighbors of stealing him because she “heard his barking.”
Caring for someone with dementia is emotionally exhausting. For years, Dad warned me before each visit: “She might not recognize you or your kids.” We’d patiently answer the same questions repeatedly. Grandma Agnes is still stubbornly independent, but she struggles to make sense of the world. Still, she insists on living alone and never stops asking about Snoopy.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右:
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

A few months ago, Uncle Ed came up with a good idea and bought a robotic dog for
Grandma Agnes. The new Snoopy looked almost the same as the old one, with black-and-white fur and a wagging tail. When Grandma touched its head, the robot barked softly and rubbed
against her hand. “Oh, Snoopy! You’re back!” she cried, holding it close. From that day on, she “fed” it every morning and talked to it while sitting in the yard. Though the robotic dog couldn’t run or play, its programmed warmth seemed to comfort her. She stopped accusing the neighbors and even smiled more often.
Everyone was pleased that Grandma Agnes liked “Snoopy” a lot. Last Sunday, I visited her with Dad. She didn’t recognize me, but she cheerfully introduced her “good boy” to us. The

robotic dog sat beside her, its head resting on her lap as she hummed an old song. Dad whispered, “Technology may not cure her illness, but it gives her peace.” Watching Grandma gently stroke
the robot’s fur, I realized how something as simple as a machine could reconnect her to lost love and memories. Science, in its own quiet way, had become a bridge between her fading world and the care we longed to provide.
范文 2
A few months ago, Uncle Ed came up with a good idea and bought a robotic dog for
Grandma Agnes. When the lifelike, black-and-white spotted robotic dog was placed before her,
Grandma froze. Her eyes widened in shock. Then, a faint smile spread on her wrinkled face.
“Snoopy ” she softly murmured, reaching to touch its head. The dog barked gently and wagged its tail. Since then, it has become a constant companion in her life. She took it for walks around the
yard, chatting about farm days.
Everyone was pleased that Grandma Agnes liked “Snoopy” a lot. It’s heartwarming. She
showers the robotic pet with love, as ifit were the real Snoopy. The empty look in her eyes has
turned into a spark of joy. During visits, we often find her on the porch, the robotic dog at her feet, as she shares childhood stories. This simple yet smart idea has brought back companionship. Such is the meaning of technology, which gives us hope, showing that love and memories can shine
through, even with dementia.
