Today’s robots do everything from building car s to exploring Mars. They go to places humans are unable to and handle dangerous or messy jobs that we’d rather avoid doing. Who knows what
could be possible with robots in the near future Check out these amazing robots both past and present…maybe one will inspire the roboticist in you!UNIMATE
A robot arm might not sound that exciting, but one forever changed how cars are made. The
Unimate started to work in a car factory in New Jersey in 1961. Soon, it had spread around the United States, Europe, and Japan, putting cars together faster than people could. The first
Unimates helped build 110 cars per hour—more than double the rate achieved before! Robotic arms are still used in factories today.SOJOURNER
Sojourner, the first of NASA’s robotic explorers, called rovers, landed on Mars in 1997. About the size of a microwave oven, Sojourner measured wind and weather and sent back more than 550
photos of Mars. The rover was designed for a week-long task but kept going for 83 Martian days (85 Earth days).COLOSSUS
Colossus is a fire-fighting robot. It sprays more than 660 gallons (2,500 liters) of water per minute and can carry more than 1,000 pounds (450 kg) of gear (装备). In 2019, Colossus helped put out the fire in Paris’s famed Notre Dame Cathedral. When areas grew too dangerous for human
firefighters, the robot rolled inside to save the day.SPOT
Spot’s four legs let it climb stairs and handle rough ground, and its five pairs of cameras can be used to examine places too dangerous for humans. In 2022, archaeologists in Pompeii,

Extremely authentic-looking prosthetic (假体的) eyes can now be 3D-printed in a fraction of the time it would normally take to produce the eyes by hand, scientists demonstrate in a new study.
The new technology can create a prosthetic eye in just 90 minutes, compared with the eight hours it would normally take a skilled technician, or ocularist, to produce one by hand. The
3D-printed eyes require five times less labor to make than traditional methods, the scientists behind the technology wrote in a new paper published in the journal Nature Communications.
The 3D-printed eyes also look more natural than traditional prostheses; this could help improve a patient’s self-confidence in using the devices. “Patients are very conscious about
wearing a prosthesis, and they don't want others to notice,” Johann Reinhard, lead study author and a researcher at the Fraunhofer
Institute for Computer Graphics Research in Germany, told us. “With these more realistic eves, it might help them to participate more in society,” he said.
The new printing approach involves taking a specialized image of a patient’s empty eye
socket and of their healthy eye. These images are then processed and used to draft blueprints that can be sent to be 3D-printed in the lab. These 3D-printed eyes closely replicate the color, size and structure of the patient's healthy eye and are particularly good at capturing the colored part of the eye, known as the iris, and the white part of the eye, called the sclera. Once finished, the eyes take

15 to 30 minutes to be installed by an ocularist, Reinhard said.
“About 80% of adults in need of prosthetic eyes could theoretically have one made this
way, either due to a birth defect that causes an eye to be small or missing or because they’ve lost an eye,” the team said. “However, this wouldn’t be possible for all patients, such as those who
have a very complex eye socket, as the software wouldn’t be able to find a matching shape for the prosthetic eye,” Reinhard said.
“More data are needed to see if this technique could also be used to make prosthetic eyes for children, which would require more regulation,” Reinhard said.
24 .Which of the following words can be best used to describe the 3D-printed eyes
A .Eco-friendly. B .Time-consuming. C .Fit-of-all. D .Realistic-looking.
25 .How does the author develop his idea mainly in Paragraph 2
A .By justifying an idea. B .By giving examples.
C .By providing evidence. D .By making a comparison.
26 .Which statement is true about a 3D-printed eye
A .The patients prefer to show off their prosthetic eyes.
B .Every adult in need of a prosthetic eye can’t possibly have one.
C .It normally takes a skilled technician, or ocularist, to produce one.
D .The installment of one is 5 times faster than a traditional prosthetic eye.
27 .Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A .3D-printed Eyes——a Better Alternative
B .3D Printing—a Promising Technology
C .3D-printed Eyes—a Source of Confidence
D .Prosthetic Eyes—the Hope for all Blind People

Five times stronger than steel, spider silk’s unique qualities were recognized by the Ancient Greeks—and more recently, scientists have looked at applications from medicine to engineering. Now, a Japanese startup, Spiber, has begun to change the textile industry with this remarkable
material.
The company started by making a substitute in the lab that is similar to spider silk in
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
structure. After studying thousands of different spider species and other silk-producing life forms, Spiber successfully produced an alternative to spider silk. This breakthrough was achieved by
fermenting (发酵) a mixture of water, sugar, and nutrients with special microbes to produce
protein polymers (聚合物). These polymers are then made into fibers, paving the way for a range of innovative fabrics.
However, shifting from lab to practical application presented challenges. In 2015, Spiber
partnered with The North Face Japan to produce a limited-edition run of 50 “Moon Parka”jackets to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landings. But during the design process, the team
discovered that spider silk became smaller when exposed to water, and had to transform the
protein to make the fiber suitable for an outdoor jacket, which took them four years to perfect.
Currently, the company uses sugarcane and corn for its fermentation process—crops that use large volumes of land and change food resources. To reduce its environmental impact, Spiber is developing a process called “biosphere circulation” that will transform deserted clothes made from natural materials like cotton into the sugars needed for fermentation.
With approximately 100 billion yen ($783 million) in funding, Spiber plans to significantly speed up its production of protein polymers by the end of 2025. “Mass production will help bring the price of fibers down and allow Spiber to expand beyond the high-end designer market and thus we have the means to create solutions to enable more circular fashion,” says Higashi, head of
business development at Spiber. “It’s our mission to bring those solutions to the world.”
28 .What breakthrough did Spiber achieve in the early research
A .It mixed various protein polymers. B .It produced a silk making machine.
C .It identified different spider species. D .It created a replacement for spider silk.
29 .What was the challenge in making the “Moon Parka” jackets
A .High design costs. B .Spider silk’s sensitivity to water.
C .Limited raw materials. D .The partner’s unwillingness to help.
30 .What can we know about Spiber’s “biosphere circulation” process
A .It will replace the current fermentation process.
B .It will use recycled materials for needed sugars.
C .It will promote the development of food industry.
D .It will simplify the procedure of clothing production.
试卷第 7 页,共 14 页
31 .What is Spiber’s plan
A .To raise more money for mass production. B .To increase the output of protein polymers.
C.To work with other high-end fashion brands. D.To develop a wider range of expensive fibers.
D
The age-old chore of dusting could soon be a thing of the past. Scientists are developing “self-cleaning” surfaces that make dust particles unable to stick to them. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin say the particles instead stick to each other and simply roll off the surfaces with nothing more than the assistance of gravity.
The scientists altered the geometry (几何构造) of flat surfaces at a level invisible to human eyes. The team made a tightly-packed nanoscale (纳米级) network of pyramid-shaped structures on the surfaces which made it difficult for dust particles to stick to the material. Instead, the
particles stick to each other before rolling off the material due to gravity.
The study, funded by a grant (拨款) from NASA’s Small Business Innovation Research
program, tested the material by piling lunar dust on their engineered surfaces before turning them on their sides. The team found that just two percent of the surface remained dusty, compared with more than 35 percent of an unaltered smooth surface. The new surface could provide a passive
solution to removing dust, as opposed to more active methods like using wipers and fluid to clear dust from a car windscreen.
“What we’ve demonstrated here is a surface that can clean itself,” says lead study author Chih-Hao Chang. “Particulates aren’t able to stick to the surface, so they come off using just the force of gravity.”
Study authors hope the material provides a solution to space dust, which can be extremely harmful in such a high-risk environment and is almost impossible to clean out. Space dust has
previously caused great damage to NASA’s human spaceflight Apollo missions and has even
caused rovers on Mars to malfunction and fail. “There’s not much you can do about lunar dust in space—it sticks to everything and there’s no real way to wipe it off,” says Samuel Lee, a lead
author of the study. “Dust on solar panels of Mars rovers can cause them to fail.”
However, the researchers also believe the discovery could prove useful on Earth, preventing solar panels from collecting dust and losing efficiency. These surfaces may even protect our
试卷第 8 页,共 14 页
screens and windows from irritating dust.
32 .How did the scientists alter the flat surfaces
A .By putting thin paint on them. B .By creating a special network on them.
C .By making particles stick to each other. D .By making them invisible to human eyes.
33 .What can we learn about the surfaces after the test
A .Over 35% of the surfaces were dusty.
B .Just two percent of the surfaces remained dusty.
C .The surfaces still needed to be cleaned with wipers and fluid.
D .The surfaces attracted more dust particles than common ones.
34.Why does the author mention NASA’s human spaceflight Apollo missions and rovers on Mars A .To show the material can be very helpful. B .To prove irritating dust exists everywhere.
C.To show the importance of space exploration.D.To explain why NASA supported the research.
35 .What is the main idea of the text
A .Dust threatened missions in space. B .Scientists developed self-cleaning surfaces.
C.Self-cleaning surfaces proved useful on Earth. D.Scientists developed a material for rovers on Mars.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入 1 个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Have you ever wondered what life is like now 56 (compare) to, say, the 1980s or the 1990s I went to ask some people I know who were adults in the ‘80s and 90s’, and the answer I got was that “Overall, life is a lot 57 (good) now!” This didn’t really surprise me. I mean, these days we’ve got mobile phones and the internet and so on — but 58 (actual) those
weren’t the things they talked about.
So what did they talk about For 59 start, we don’t have to work physically hard
since now there are a lot of things like dishwashers for housework. Then there’s the matter of
how, these days, 60 is possible to work at home — it’s mainly 61 (computer) that have made this possible. Not only that, there’s a lot more 62 (equal) now. It’s easier for all people, whatever their social background, gender (性别), colour and so on, to have equal
access 63 a variety of career opportunities.
That said, it’s not all a matter of improvement. Quite a few people told me that they feel
more stressed these days because they rely a lot on technology and they are always 64
(anxiety) about security on the internet. Plus, we spend a lot of our time 65 (use)
smartphones. One person said, “Wouldn’t it be great to be off the grid (不上网) for a few days ”

Back in the early 1980s, the idea of home computers was catching on. I wasn't keen on
getting one. Somehow, I evolved and have owned several computers over the years. Some days, I loved my computer, but more often than not, I hated it. I didn't grow up with them, and they were a challenge to my mental health. Dealing with modern technology was my introduction to stress, and I know who to blame: my children.
They weren't satisfied that their dad and I finally bought a computer and learned to send
e-mails. We were quite happy with that, but next came a cellphone. Then just talking on the phone was not acceptable; they insisted we learn to text as well. We couldn't get a break.
I remember well the night that Facebook became a household word around here. Those kids of ours were determined to set up a joint account for us. It took some convincing. We felt no guilt for grating on (激怒) their nerves considering the drama they'd sometimes created for us during
their teenage years. A little payback wouldn't hurt those two.
More recently, my husband and I were forced into getting rid of our flip phones and getting smartphones. I will admit that I progressed into appreciating mine. I liked speaking to Siri and
finding out what I needed to know in an instant. I enjoyed having Internet access everywhere I went. I felt a sense of accomplishment; my husband-not so much. To this day, he would happily take back his flip phone.
Last Christmas, our children surprised us with yet another popular form of
technology-Alexa. The girls took our smartphones in hand and got us programmed. Before we
fully understood what was happening, we could tell Alexa to turn our lamp on or off, and she
would. To be honest, we were a bit annoyed at having to learn how to use yet another device, but we decided to keep it. We mastered turning the lamp on and off, and once again I got the hang of

W: Almost every country in the world is against it.
2 .C
【原文】M: Seeing the doctor at home, shopping at home, oh, we can do so many things at home nowadays.
W: We certainly can. We’ll have a robot to do the housework some day!
3 .A
【原文】W: Have you ever thought that artificial intelligence will take the place of doctors
M: No, impossible. But artificial intelligence can make doctors better.
W: You mean computers will not treat patients, but they can help make right decisions
M: Exactly.
4 .B
【原文】M: What’s the headline today
W: Huawei launches its own Harmony operating system.
M: I can’t believe that. It’s really a big breakthrough in Chinese technology.
5 .A
【原文】M: Miss Dermott, let me ask you straight away. Do you think, within a few years, many people could work at home instead of working in offices
W: Oh, yes. It’s happening now. You see, the communication industry has made such progress in the last ten years.
6 .B 7 .A 8 .C
【原文】M: In the future, many of our current jobs will be done by robots.
W: The future is closer than you think. Several of my friends were fired in a car factory, because robots are now replacing them.
M: Robots do offer better output (产量) for less cost. They can operate all day and night.
W: This is true, but my friends are no longer earning any money.
答案第 1 页,共 14 页
M: Hopefully they will be able to find other jobs.
W: It is getting harder to find a job that will not be replaced in a few years’ time.
M: This is true. I read a report that said in this decade, 3% of jobs were at risk from machines.
W: I read the same report. That number would jump to 33% during the next decade.
M: Yes, but they also pointed out that robots and artificial intelligence could boost the global economy by $15 trillion.
W: Do you think they will replace lawyers like us
M: Not anytime soon.
W: We have to work long hours, but at least we have job security.
9 .C 10 .A 11 .C
【原文】W: What changes do you think will take place in the next 50 years
M: Maybe the differences between humans and machines.
W: What do you mean
M: I mean it will be harder to tell the differences between the human and the machine.
W: Can you describe it more clearly
M: As science develops, it will be possible for all parts of one’s body to be replaced. A computer will work like the human brain. The computer can recognize one’s feelings, and act according to them.
W: You mean man-made human beings will be produced Come on! That’s out of the question!
M: We will then be able to create a machine that is a copy of ourselves. We’ll appear to be alive long after we are dead.
W: What a joke!
M: It’s possible that a way will be found to put our spirit into a new body. Then, we can choose to live for as long as we want.
W: In that case, the world would be a hopeless mess!

【原文】M: Miss Green, do you think within a few years many people could work at home instead of working outside
答案第 2 页,共 14 页
W: It’s happening now. The communication industry has made much progress in recent years. Like the development of 5G smartphones and AI technology also helps.
M: And how do these people manage to work
W: Well, they have a television set, a computer, a printer, and a telephone to connect with other computers.
M: Oh, I see, but surely there are some advantages in working at home.
W: Yes, people don’t have to spend a lot of time getting to and from their workplaces. The rush
hours are the worst time of day. They may make more money if they apply for more different jobs.
M: Ah, yes, I see. What do you think about the conditions of home workers
W: Let me tell you what might happen. A British company, for example in London, might employ clerks in Belfast, or a Paris company could have their managers in Spain. They just use a
telephone to call around for the employee.

【原文】M: Hello. Can I show you guys the virtual reality projects They’re from our company Activision.
W: My son will probably be even more excited. Can children try these systems
M: Why don’t you try it first and show it to your son
W: Sure. Of all the products from different companies here today, yours is certainly the most advanced.
M: Thanks. We attend exhibitions around the country, so we frequently hear that.
W: All right. I’m putting on the glasses. And now, it is a whole new world. What can I do here
M: Here’s your virtual home page. Here you can watch movies, play games, or interact with others in the virtual world.
W: This is going to take over the computer market. Can I buy it here, or should I go to the company store
M: We’re still developing it, sorry. There will always be a demand for traditional computers and communication methods. Still, I’ll promise you that products from our firm will dominate the
industry.
W: I want to bring it home now. What a shame!
