As a child in his own country, the Tanzanian was already a fan of kung fu stars such as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Donnie Yen. He understood Chinese kung Fu to be a
fast-paced attack and defense art.
“Tai chi is different from the Chinese kung Fu that I knew. It is slow. But as I practice it, I have realized that the slow moments are far from being simple,” Abdi said.
The school provides a Tai Chi course for all foreign students. Abdi has already learned to practice Tai Chi moves with balance and deep rhythmic breathing, which allows him to feel the charm of the exercise. It brings peace and calmness to his mind, while building his muscles.

He said his Rwandan classmate likes to post videos of them practicing Tai Chi on social media, and another Cameroonian classmate has learned from Tai Chi how to improve his boxing skills.

While a healthy diet has always been considered necessary for fitness, many hospitals have failed to notice its powerful potential for curing. In some areas, that’s beginning to change. In
Pennsylvania four years ago, St. Luke’s Hospital partnered with Rodale Institute to start an
organic produce (有机农产品) farm at the hospital’s campus in Easton. Since its first season, the St. Luke’s farm has become greater in size.
Today, St. Luke’s sends all new mothers home with a basket of organic produce. New moms
aren’t the only ones benefiting from the farm’s generous actions. Organic produce is also served to patients. Meanwhile, it is cooked up in cafeterias operated by the hospital’s six-campus network
and sold at nearby farmers’ markets.
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
While some hospitals are getting food from nearby farms, others are turning unused land on
their grounds into community (社区) gardens. Even though most hospital farms aren’t growing enough to completely give their workers and patients food needs, providing even a small amount of fresh produce makes educational information about how healthy and delicious a plant-rich diet can be.
While the farm-to-hospital movement continues to gain support, it’s experiencing some
challenges along the way. For one, health workers don’t necessarily know how to grow food. This means that most hospitals need to hire a full-time farmer and other farm labor to manage the land, which can be expensive. It takes between 3 and 5 years for most hospital farms to make the cost
and income equal. Even so, these hospitals believe that the benefits are worthwhile. As the
movement continues to enlarge, you might soon experience a farm-fresh meal at a hospital near you.
28 .What does the underlined word “its” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A .Rodale Institute’s. B .St. Luke’s farm’s.
C .The community’s. D .St. Luke’s hospital’s.
29 .What can we learn about St. Luke’s Hospital
A .It operates a hospital farm alone.
B .It sells organic produce to patients.
C .It pays much less attention to a healthy diet.
D .It offers new moms organic produce for free.
30 .Why do some hospitals create community gardens
A .To get plants from the community.
B .To make full use of the green land.
C .To offer their workers enough food.
D .To educate people on a plant-rich diet.
31 .What can we infer from the last paragraph
A .Managing hospital farms costs nothing.
B .Hospital farms will benefit more people.
C .Farm-to-hospital movement is worthless.
D .Health workers have to learn to grow food.

Foods high in sugar are unhealthy, but these additives are too delicious for many ofus to
give up or reduce in a way. What if we could somehow enjoy their taste without actually eating
them A student team has now designed a spoon with a structure that stimulates taste buds (味蕾) to produce a sense of sweetness without adding calories or chemicals. The project follows
previous work involving flavor-enhancing cutlery (餐具) like chopsticks that increase sweetness with a mild electric current.
The five undergraduate and graduate research students wanted to create a new spoon called Sugarware for people with such disorders as diabetes, with which sugar is largely off their menu.
The-new spoon would have several bumps (凸起) on its underside to press against the
tongue. The bumps can be covered with a permanent layer of molecules (分子) called ligands.
These ligands bond with taste-cell receptor proteins that typically react to sugar molecules or
artificial sweeteners. The bond can activate nerve signals, causing the brain to register a sense of sweetness. A diner could thus stimulate sweetness receptors without actual intake of sugar or
artificial sweeteners.
This idea is similar to the previous work in that they all use cutlery to enhance taste without a user having to actually consume any sugar. “But the mechanism for stimulating the taste buds is
completely different,” Shiyu Xu, one of the student researchers, says, “It uses bumps and taste-bud-stimulating molecules rather than electricity.”
The idea is “very creative”, says Paola Almeida, who is the global director of corporate innovation at candy maker Mars. But the product’s commercial success would require a
significant behavioral shift among consumers: instead of adding the usual sugar or artificial
sweeteners, now we’re saying, “Use this cutlery,” Almeida says, “It remains to be seen whether flavor-enhancing cutlery will catch on”.
32 .What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A .How the new invention works. B .How a diner feel sweetness.
C .How ligands and proteins link. D .How sugar molecules function.
33 .In what way is the previous flavor-enhancing cutlery different from Sugarware
A .It makes food more delicious. B .It sends out signals to the brain.

C .It uses electricity to enhance taste. D .It reduces users’ food consumption.
34 .What is Paola Almeida’s attitude to the future of Sugarware
A .Positive. B .Uncertain. C .Critical. D .Concerned.
35 .What’s the best title of the text
A .Struggling for Low Sugar — Try This Spoon
B .Looking for Delicious Food — This is How
C .Working for Commercial Success — Be Creative
D .Dieting for Better Health — Mind Sweeteners

Grandma.” she sighed softly.
Eartha’s Grandma had been practising yoga for more than 50 years, who could twist, bend and curl her body with ease. She could even stand on her hands and pull her body into different poses.
“Eartha, your name means ‘patience’.You need patience for yoga,” said her Grandma.
Like many schools in the country,Eartha’ s school held an annual yoga competition. Eartha wanted to make her Grandma proud. But she could hardly stand on one leg.
Grandma returned to the kitchen.Eartha kept practicing hard. She stood straight, her arms at her sides. She moved her hands and knees, arching her back. All of these poses were easy, while
the competition was certain to be harder. So she tried more challenging poses, lying on her
stomach and pushing up on her hands. Her arms soon got tired and she collapsed to the floor. Eartha wandered into the kitchen.
“Finished already ” asked Grandma.
“It’s hard,” Eartha said. “How did you get to be so strong ”
Grandma smiled. “Patience.”
The next morning, Eartha felt ached and sore all over the body. Her legs hurt so badly from the poses she practiced that she even wanted to quit. However, her grandmother’s words echoed in her mind, and she held the pose for a longer time.
Each day Eartha would practice anew pose, before going over the poses she had practiced the previous few days. With the date of the competition approaching, she started to feel stronger and more flexible. Her arms and legs stopped trembling.
The day of the yoga competition arrived as expected. In the gym, Eartha lay on her back
with her knees bent and placed her hands on the floor behind her. Everything went smoothly. Just then,so eager was she to win Grandma’s pride that her poses displayed a mix ofimpatience, and rigidness. Eartha fell on the mat, which cost her edge over other competitors. A bell rang, ending the first half of the competition.

Everyone has a natural sleep routine. You go to bed and wake up at a certain time. But
everyone’s routine is not the same. Some people — the early birds — go to bed early at night
(around 9:00 or 10:00 pm). In the morning, they wake up easily and are energetic. Others — the night owls — stay awake late (until midnight or later). For them, it is difficult to wake up early. What do we know about early birds and night owls Here is what studies show.
Teenagers are natural night owls. Also, most need nine to ten hours’ sleep a night. But in many places, the school or work day starts at 8:00 am. For this reason, only one in five teenagers sleeps enough. More early birds get good grades in school, but night owls do better on some
intelligence tests, according to a study of 1,000 Spanish teens. People with high scores on these tests usually get good jobs.

Grandma settled at the front seat, kindly smiling and waving to her. Head hanging, Eartha shuffled to Grandma with heavy footsteps.“I’m proud of you!” Grandma whispered softly. Astonished and unexpected, Eartha stared at Grandma with a bit skeptical expression. Although relieved of
frustration temporarily, she was increasingly concerned about the next half. Sensing her worries, Grandma asked if she still remembered the meaning of her name. Eartha nodded, reflecting on her hard practices.
Calm and confident, Eartha stepped on the stage for the second half of the competition.
Completely relaxed, Eartha immersed herself in poses, letting go of anything that might distract her. So full of patience and balance was every pose that flexibility was perfectly demonstrated,
