Mary Shelley bends over her latest creation. Although the carving is only half complete, the image of a waitress holding a plate of eggs comes out from the board. Of Shelley’s nearly seven
hundred carvings, many show scenes with cows on farms and people in restaurants.
From memories to carvings
“My work is a visual diary, ” Shelley says. “The carvings describe things I have experienced and felt at different times in my life.”
Every one of her carvings tells a story. Many of the stories in Shelley’s woodcarvings come from memories of her childhood in a rural (乡村的) area outside of Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
Shelley’s family managed a small farm. Mary was a serious girl who spent a lot of time raising
animals, exploring outdoors, and reading. Although Shelley never felt especially artistic as a child, there was always an art project in the works in the Shelley household. Her grandmother painted.
Her father was a commercial artist, who drew and wrote to make a living.
______
Shelley attended Cornell University and hoped to become a writer, but an unusual present took her in another direction. At age 23, she received a gift her father had made-a woodcarving of her as a girl on the farm. The gift caught her interest. After gathering boards from a building site where she worked as a carpenter, Shelley bought some tools and taught herself to carve.
Shelley soon realized that she loved the slow, thoughtful process of working with wood and painting. “A carving is like a jigsaw puzzle (拼图游戏),” she explains. “I didn’t know how it
would all fit together, but the process of solving the puzzle kept me going.”

The Shelley style
Early in her career, people hired Shelley to carve special pieces that took four or five weeks to complete. The money she received motivated her to try more complicated scenes created by
carving deeper in the wood. Over time, Shelley’s art began to have its own style. In a typical Shelley woodcarving, some objects seem to reach out of the frame while others drop back,
creating a feeling of depth.

27 .According to the text, Shelley’s art .

Claude Monet is surely one of the most famous French artists of all. Monet was particularly interested in the effect of light and would paint the same scene in different lighting conditions or times of the day. For example, he painted around 20 versions of the Rouen Cathedral from dawn to dusk. His most famous paintings include his Water lilies series.
The paintings of Paul Cézanne had a lot of influence in the development of 20th century art, including Cubism (立体派) and Fauvism (野兽派). Cézanne is one of the most famous French artists and is known as a “post-impressionist”, which was similar in some ways to impressionism but also broke away from some of its limitations. Famous French paintings include his Bathers
and Mont St Victoire series.

Beer and eggs are commonly seen in the kitchen. However, scientists recently found that they were used in historic paintings, too.
To protect Danish paintings, a group of researchers studied what ancient paint was made of.
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
They did experiments on small pieces of paintings that had already been cut off from the ancient artwork. According to their paper published in Science Advances, grains (谷物) and yeast (酵母) were found on the base of the paintings. Beer was the most common drink in the 19th century in Denmark, and its by-products were grains and yeast.
The study showed that they were used to provide a stable painting surface. Researchers also pointed out that beer by-product was used as a “glue” because it had a lot of sugar. With beer
added, the paint can also dry faster.
Apart from beer, egg has long been found in oil-based paints used by artists in the 15th century, such as Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci. A recent study published in Nature
Communications may have “cracked” the secret of how eggs can help protect artworks.
The researchers re-created the ancient paint by adding egg yolks (蛋黄) to oil paint. They then looked into how it changed over time. The findings showed that the yolk’s proteins (蛋白质) helped slow the oxidation (氧化) of the paint. It could also reduce wrinkling (皱褶) as the egg
makes the paint more smooth.
However, the oil paint with added egg usually takes longer to dry. It seemed fine for artists—they were willing to accept to have their work kept for longer.
The more we understand how artists choose and use their materials, the more we can
“appreciate what they’re doing”, Ken Sutherland, an expert at the Art Institute of Chicago, US, told Science News. Sutherland added that research like this could help people have a deeper
understanding of the artworks.
32 .Why was beer used in historic Danish paintings
A .To keep the paintings clean. B .To help the paintings dry faster.
C .To make the paintings more colorful. D .To give the painting a different feel.
33 .What does the underlined word “cracked” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A .Kept. B .Shared. C .Discovered. D .Explored.
34 .How could egg yolk proteins change the paint
A .The paint could age faster. B .The paint could feel smoother.
C .The paint could dry more quickly. D .The paint’s colors could be more vivid.
35 .The author quotes Sutherland’s words in the last paragraph to stress .
A .the right methods to appreciate artworks
试卷第 8 页,共 13 页
B .the requirements for researching early artworks
C .the need of helping people understand artworks

It is frequently said that the best camera is the one you already have with you. Amazingly, the cameras on modern phones can take killer images without a professional camera. But if you’re struggling to get the quality you want, try a few of these helpful tips.
Pick the right time of day
There are a variety of lighting options that change throughout the day. 36 And it is properly named for the yellow color the sun casts. This warms any scene. If you’ve been
working during golden hour and want to try something new, go out during the blue hour. This is the hour just before sunrise or just after sunset. 37
Pay attention to lighting
38 When taking pictures of nature, pay attention to the available light. How can you use it to create eye-catching images Turn the sun peaking through the trees into a dramatic starburst by setting your f/stop to f/22 or above. Look for ways light and shadows create exciting patterns on otherwise flat backgrounds.
39
Look for subjects with natural motion like a waterfall, stream, flowers in the wind, etc., and set your shutter speeds to 20 seconds or more. It is vital to have a small secure support to ensure
your camera is as perfectly still as possible during the shot.
Photo editing apps
Don’t limit your photos to what you can capture straight out of camera (SOOC).
40 Look at the built-in filters (滤光器) that come with your system, or download a free photo editing app to add up your masterpieces. By using all these techniques, you should be able to create unique images that take brilliant photos.

Maybe, we all need to treat others with more patience and understanding. Then we might be repaid in unexpected ways.
Fifteen years ago, I took a trip to Lecce in southern Italy. Lecce is an important place for art and culture lovers. Walking among churches and old buildings in the city center is a dive into the past. More importantly, it’s an ideal place for photographing.
One morning, I got up early enough for a sweeping view of the sunrise, the blue sea, white buildings and green trees. After climbing up a hill, I paused to catch my breath. As I looked
around I was shocked by the breath-taking views in front of me.
When I positioned myself to take some pictures, a woman suddenly approached from
试卷第 12 页,共 13 页
behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, I thought, this woman was here to stop for a short break, and enjoy the scenery. Beyond my expectation, she stood still as if
something caught her attention, not noticing anyone else’s presence around her.
For about l0 minutes, I used my camera to scan the sun and review the shot I would
eventually take. Patient as I was, I got bored finally. “Is it too much to ask her to move aside so that I can take just one picture of the landscape ” I asked myself.
Of course, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so.
She seemed so absorbed in her observation that I didn't have the heart to mess with that. So I decided to wait.
Another 10 minutes passed. However, the woman was still there. I grew really impatient. I decided to take the photo anyway. With an unwilling touch of the shutter (快门), I left in low
spirits.

M: Hello, everybody. Today I’d like to share with you something about John James
Audubon. John was born on April 26th, 1785. He spent much of his childhood in France where he spent many hours each day outdoors painting pictures. At the age of 18, he moved to the United
States. Well, actually, John began his life in the US as a businessman. However, instead of taking care of his business, John was often off exploring nature. At first, John spent his time hunting for fun. Then he found that the animals around were very beautiful, and he particularly enjoyed
observing the birds he saw. He began studying them, trying to learn the differences between the birds and noticing their different behaviors. Therefore, he painted the birds he observed a lot. In 1819, John realized that he didn’t have enough money to pay his bills. He was very upset that he couldn’t earn enough money to support his family. So he spent time improving his painting skills and began to sell his paintings. He discovered that he could earn some money while doing
something he really enjoyed. We are lucky now to have so many paintings of American birds by John James Audubon.

67 .One possible version:
After the photos were printed, I tried to find the photo “ruined” by the woman. However, it turned out that my unwilling touch led to a perfect picture. Actually, it was exactly the woman’s
presence that made the image come to life and breathe. I loved the picture so much that I put it in a frame and sent it to a photography contest. To my surprise, this picture was thought highly of by
some professional photographers too. Several days later, I received a letter saying that I got the first prize in the photography contest.
Now this photo hangs on a wall in my study. I hung it there not only because it is my favorite picture, but also it can be a reminder. For one thing, it can be a reminder for me to be patient when meeting with something annoying. For another, I want to remind myself that we all live in the
same space and share a common desire for beauty. If we can try to understand others, we can build a closer bonding and live in harmony with each other. Then we might be rewarded in unexpected ways though we expect nothing in return.
