Hundreds of feet below the ocean’s surface, somewhere between the dark ocean floor and the bright blue shallows, lies the twilight zone. It’s a world of the unknown, and many assumed that the lack of light and cold temperatures meant few species could exist there.
But one scientist has been diving into the inky depths to show there’s much more to life
there than was first thought. Rocha, a researcher from the California Academy of Sciences, was
attracted to twilight zone reefs because of their mystery (神秘). “Every dive we do to those depths leads to a new discovery,” he says. To date, he has identified over 300 new species.
Entering the twilight zone is no easy feat. Recreational diving is capped at 130 feet for
safety reasons, but Rocha dives as far as 500 feet. To do this requires deep concentration, intense technical training and a strong dose of bravery. Rocha usually dives in a group with two scientists and one safety officer. They spend hours preparing the kit, ensuring every piece of equipment is functioning well and that they are equipped to deal with underwater emergencies.
While the twilight zone has been explored by very few people, the effects of human activity are still apparent. One of their first discoveries is that those deeper reefs are really not a shelter for shallow reef organisms. They are almost as impacted as the shallow reefs are. They find plastic
waste and fishing gear in some of the deepest reefs and has observed the impact of overfishing and climate change.
试卷第 5 页,共 14 页
Rocha hopes that his research can help to educate people about the twilight zone and inspire action to protect it. “I don’t think it’s enough just to do the science. We take many, many
photographs … and we bring those stories back up to the surface and we share it with as many people as possible. For the most part, I’d like to let people realize that those creatures are under threat,” he says.
24 .Why do many people think there is few species at the twilight zone
A .It isn’t far from the ocean’s surface. B .It is cold and lacks light.
C .It is completely dark all day. D .It is a world that people cannot get to.
25 .What can we know about the twilight zone
A .There are only a lot of reefs there.
B .People have much knowledge about it.
C .There are a large number of various living things.
D .There aren’t as many species as people think before.
26 .How is Rocha’s journey to the twilight zone
A .It is risky. B .It is easy. C .It is comfortable. D .It is lonely.
27 .What can be inferred from Rocha’s words in the last paragraph
A .His scientific research is hardly inspirational.
B .Taking pictures underwater is enjoyable.
C .Humans are responsible for protecting the twilight zone.
D .The research at the twilight zone is now under threat.

The US Ambassador to the UK officially launched a ship named Mayflower on Wednesday, 400 years to the day after a wooden ship with that name sailed from an English port and changed the history of two continents.
Unlike the merchant ship that carried a group of European settlers to a new life across the Atlantic Ocean in 1620, the new Mayflower named by U S Ambassador Robert Wood Johnson has no crew or passengers. It will cross the sea powered by sun and wind, and controlled by
artificial intelligence (AI).
Johnson said the high-tech ship, developed jointly by British-based research organization
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
ProMare and US tech giant IBM, showed that “the pioneering spirit of the Mayflower really lives on”. “We’re heading out with the same spirit of adventure and determination and hope for the
future as the original colonists (殖民者),” said Johnson.
Like the Mayflower in 1620, the new ship will travel from Plymouth, England, to Plymouth, Massachusetts. The ship’s launch in Plymouth is one of several Mayflower commemorations.
They involve British, Americans and Dutch institutions — many of the 17th-century colonists had left England for Holland before the voyage — and the Wampanoag people, who had lived for
thousands of years in what is now New England. In 1620, the Wampanoag helped the exhausted
Mayflower settlers survive their first winter. But soon colonial expansion and new diseases were
having a big impact on North America’s Native Indians. Wampanoag stories have been
marginalized (使边缘化) on past Mayflower anniversaries (周年纪念), but they are playing a big part in events and exhibitions this time around. “The story of the Mayflower is one that really can’t be told without telling also the story of the Wampanoag,” said Paula Peters, a Wampanoag writer.
The Mayflower Autonomous Ship is intended to explore parts of oceans too difficult or
dangerous for people to reach. Andy Stanford-Clark, Chief Technology Officer for IBM in the UK and Ireland, said the ship’s launch “is a very exciting stage of the journey toward crewless
shipping” that could pave the way for AI-driven commercial ships and research ships.
The 50-foot ship will go through six months of sea trials and make short trips before setting out on its trans-Atlantic trip to measure ocean health: assessing the impact of climate change,
measuring micro-plastic pollution and studying populations of whales and dolphins.
28 .What do we know about the new Mayflower
A .It is a wooden ship.
B .It is powered by clean energy.
C .It will carry a large load of goods.
D .It will carry a small number of passengers.
29 .What does the new Mayflower represent according to Johnson
A .The sufferings ofthe British people in history.
B .The friendship between the US and the UK.
C .The long-lasting bravery of humankind.
D .The development of high technology.
试卷第 7 页,共 14 页
30 .What change can the launch of the new Mayflower bring
A .It will seek help for Native Americans.
B .It will bring Wampanoag stories to light.
C .It will encourage more and more sea exploration.
D .It will help describe the colonists’journey in detail.
31 .What is the practical use of the new Mayflower
A .It can protect commercial ships.
B .It can carry out certain surveys.
C .It can save animals stuck in water.
D .It can get rid of underwater dangers.

Lufinha has crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a small boat powered only by the sun and wind. He used kites to move the boat and solar power to use lights and equipment on the boat. He
expects his trip will earn him a Guinness World Record for Fastest Solo Atlantic Crossing by Kite Boat. He also hopes to help people understand the need to protect the oceans.
The kite-powered boat reached top speeds of over 30 kilometers per hour. Lufinha traveled
6,400 kilometers in 25 days. The 38-year-old set out from Cascais, near Lisbon, Portugal on
November 3, 2022, and arrived in Martinique on December 20, Lufinha was not at sea for all that time, however. He made a planned stop at the Canary Islands on November 8. But he had to stay longer than planned because of the powerful storm and he remained there until November 30.
Lufinha made the crossing completely alone in a 7.2-meter-long and 5.6-meter-wide
trimaran, a boat which has three long, thin parts, with a small room for sleeping and shelter.
Lufinha used a hand pump (抽水机) to produce water for drinking and cooking. He said, “I have two such water makers, which I can pump and every hour I can make around four liters of water.” The water pump has a special filter (过滤器) to remove salt from the sea water. Lufinha used the water to add to dried food he carried with him on the boat.
He called his trip “a big learning experience”. It was a big test of his adaptability. He
learned most of all to look at his problems relatively. He had so many problems all of the time,
such as kites getting torn and kites exploding (爆炸). And the only way not to suffer was to think,

Kala has deep ties to her Hawaiian roots. Her ancestors navigated(航行)the oceans for centuries using their knowledge of the stars, the sun, the currents and the wind. 36 .
It’s not that she navigates without technology. Rather, she uses the natural technology
around her. It’s called Wayfinding, and it was taught to her by her father. 37 . He also
taught her how to use them to hold the course. Over 200 stars have specific names and purposes when they are Wayfinding. They have to look at each of the stars and determine if they are rising

Onni always had a great time with his grandad in winter because his grandad would teach him how to ski and they sometimes went for trips in the nearby woods.
When Onni turned ten, his grandad told him he was old enough to go with him into the
Finnish wilderness. Therefore, one day, they put on their skis and set off into the forest, travelling for several kilometres while the sky turned dark above them. Eventually, they arrived at a silent
and beautiful wooden cabin. Grandad managed to push the door open. Inside, it was icy-cold and smelled damp and musty.
“Now we need a fire!” said grandad. He pointed at the pot-belly stove in the corner.
They collected armfuls of wood and chopped them up. Before long, a fire lighted up the cabin with a golden light! The old man pulled out a pan and began frying some sausages.
Onni stared out of the window. “What animals live out here ” he asked. “Oh, the forest is full of life!” his grandad answered. “I have seen snow hares, stags, bears and snowy owls. There was only one creature we never managed to see.”
“What was that ” asked Onni. He was curious!
“Firefox! They say that during the day: his fur is inky-black. But at night, it shines with the most amazing colours! The light of his fur is supposed to brighten up the night sky at midwinter creating the wonderful glow that we call the Northern Lights, which always guide the people lost in forests.”
Dear Johnson,

Grandad sighed. “I always wanted to see this beast! It is said that whoever spots the Firefox would be blessed.” Hearing this, Onni looked out of the window again in the hope of being the
lucky one.
Grandad turned the sausages over as they sizzled (发出咝咝声) in the pan. “Why don’t you get some more firewood, Onni ” he suggested. Onni ventured out (冒险外出) again. As the boy was gathering more wood, he heard a sound and saw a glow in the trees.

M: Yes, you don’t have anything to worry about. We do about 100 trips a day up the mountain, and these tours have been going on for over ten years without any accidents.
W: That’s a relief. What’s that lake down there
M: That’s John Lake. It’s actually a man-made pond. During the 70’s there was a lot of clear
cutting of forests in the area, and much of the wildlife was lost. Since John Lake was built, ducks, swans, and geese have returned to the area.

W: Well, it is pretty cold for much of the year. But during the summer, it’s just as warm as it is in states like Washington and Oregon.
M: Interesting. The days are really long right now. I don’t think the sun has been down for more than a few hours the whole time I’ve been here.
W: Yeah, that’s another interesting thing about the summers here. We’re so far north that we’re exposed to the sun for almost the entire day. In winter, the opposite is true.
M: You mean it’s dark the whole time
W: Well, not the whole time…but maybe for two-thirds of every day from December to February.
M: Whoa! How do you make it through every year As a California native, I wouldn’t be able to handle that for more than one season!
W: I guess I’m used to it. When I was a kid, it was pretty fun to play with flashlights and have campfires outside in the afternoon. I never noticed that life was worse because it was always
dark.

M: Winters here are long. However, as I live on the coast, I get to see the ocean every day. That’s always great.
W: I heard that winters in Greenland are a bit shorter than they used to be—global warming, I guess
M: Yes, that’s true. They’re calling it “the greening of Greenland”.
W: The “Greening” What does that mean
M: Well, the average temperature in Greenland is rising twice as fast as in other places. So, now I have a few trees near my house. Trees didn’t use to exist in Greenland, you know! And we’re
growing some vegetables now—cabbages, potatoes, and things like that. And farmers can grow more grass for their animals.

【原文】M: Today, we’re reporting something very strange on the south coast. The water in
Depesh Lake has turned into pink. Residents of Lawton have been worried, and many have called the police station to report it. The police arrived at the lake but didn’t know what happened to the water. At first, they thought of chemical pollution, but they quickly realized this was no such
possibility. Researchers from the Coastal and Marine Science Center have been looking into the
issue. So far, they think the color might have to do with a large number of fish that have recently appeared in the lake. Researchers have caught a few of the fish and will be taking them to a lab for testing. Emergency workers are asking people to stay away from the lake, especially not to swim or fish in the water. We will be back tomorrow with more update information. This is the KMLC News. Now, over to Brittany Johnson with the weather report, followed by sports.

Dear Johnson,
My classmates and I took part in a wildness survival program from Thursday to Saturday last week. I can’t wait to share some relevant details with you.
Before we started, we were equipped with a compass, a map, a first aid kit, tents,
flashlights, some food, some clothes and so on. In the wild, we climbed three hills and swam
across two rivers. But then we lost our way in the forest. Luckily, we found the right direction
with the help of the compass. As soon as we arrived at the campsite, we put up out tents, made a fire and then started cooking. We also learned how to give first aid.
Through the program, we learned to use knowledge gained in class to solve problems. It was quite an unforgettable experience for me.
Yours,
Li Hua
