Science fiction pioneer and writer Wu Yan won the National Outstanding Children’s
literature Award for his latest work China Orbit. The book focuses on the development of the
Chinese aerospace industry, and it was inspired by the planning and preparation for China’s first but canceled manned spacecraft, “Shuguang 1”, also known as Project 714, during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
“I collected many historical documents and stories and started writing decades ago, Wu remembered. Partly based on Wu’s own experiences in the 1970s, the book is a combination of reality and fiction, and in some ways his own memoir (传记) was added into the science fiction. This innovative and unique writing method makes the book stand out and has even stirred up a debate on how to categorize it. Is it science fiction, popular science, children’s literature, or
aerospace literature
His fellow science fiction writer Liu Cixin, author of The Three-Body Problem, sees it more deeply, and believes China Orbit is not really children’s science fiction or popular science. He
thinks it is too complicated to be classed under a single category. He speaks highly of China Orbit as a unique science fiction novel that vividly shows a child’s real-life experience in a military of a specific era.
In Wu’s opinion, China is a big market for children’s science fiction, but it still lacks
extraordinary works. He warned people not to try to earn quick money from it after The
Three-BodyProblem frenzy (狂热) and movie blockbuster (轰动) The Wondering Earth because Chinese science fiction still has a long way to go. We need to build Chinese science fiction step by step, with an accumulation of really great works. We need to innovate, and treat it as part of
building China’s new culture.
21 .What is the book China Orbit mainly about
A .The space industry in China.
B .The introduction to Project 714.
C .Stories about Chinese outstanding astronauts.
D .Preparations for China’s first manned spacecraft.
22 .What is Wu’s approach to writing China Orbit
A .He organizes the writing by time.
B .He tells the story in the form of debate.
C .He focuses on creating the role of children.
D .He combines his personal experiences with fiction.
23 .What can we infer from the last paragraph
A .China Obit has great commercial value.
B .Chinese science movies are of poor quality.
C .Innovation is crucial to Chinese science fiction.
D .Wu Yan is disappointed at the Chinese film market.
B
Shortly after its opening on the first day of Chinese New Year, The Wandering Earth began
to gain momentum (展现强劲势头). In a little over a week, it made 2.8 billion yuan in the
domestic market alone. The film’s popularity and success has come as a surprise to many
reviewers especially since there hasn’t been that much success for Chinese-produced science
fiction in the past. Many agree that this film will change the embarrassing situation and bring in a new age for Chinese science fiction.
As a genre (类型), Chinese science fiction has lagged behind general fiction in both the
film and publishing industries. Even Liu Cixin’s (the author who wrote the short story on which
The Wandering Earth is based) The Three Body Problem —which is currently quite popular —
didn’t have many readers until it was translated into English and won the Hugo Award (雨果奖) in 2015. Personally, I haven’t read much of any genre written in Chinese, but I do notice that there aren’t many separate sections of the bookstore dedicated to science fiction. I cannot speak for
everyone, but some people seem to have misunderstandings regarding the genre.
My parents were the type who tried to steer me in the direction of non-fiction and the
classics. They believed that science fiction and fantasy were “unrealistic nonsense” and would “rot my brain.” Actually, great science fiction writers do their research. More often than not, one can
learn a great deal about science and its possible development from reading science fiction. Sure, some of the concepts may be confusing or technical in nature, but that is also part of the appeal. Things like the internet, electric cars and tablet computers were first theorized (建立理论) in
science fiction before they were invented. The author simply uses a combination of science and their imagination to create worlds different from the Earth of today, from which we can get bits and pieces that can be turned into a reality.
The world is changing. There may very well be a time when Earth is no longer able to
sustain the entire population. We could be living on Mars or in giant spaceships; perhaps we will be forced to move Earth to a new solar system just like The Wandering Earth. Each of these
scenarios has appeared in science fiction multiple times. If we are to be prepared for what is to come, we can look into modern science fiction for a window into the future.
24 .According to the article, which of the following statements about The Wandering Earth is NOT true
A .Critics did not expect too much of the film before its release.
B .It is the first time that Chinese science fiction has succeed in the film industry.
C .The film was adapted from a short story in Liu Cixin’s The Three Body Problem.

A .has little interest in science fiction
B .has never read Chinese science fiction
C .was not allowed to read science fiction by his parents
D .has not been prepared for the future development of science and technology.
26 .Paragraph 3 mainly focuses on .
A .the practical significance of science fiction
B .real technologies inspired by science fiction
C .people’s misunderstandings about science fiction
D .imaginary worlds created by science fiction writers
27 .What does the underlined word “scenarios” in the last paragraph probably mean

Andrea Lankford quit her job after spending 12 years as a National Park Service forester
specializing in search and rescue missions in scenic and remote American landscapes. However,
decades later, three young hikers went missing on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). She found herself unable to turn away from the three separate cases despite challenges in the inquiry into them.
Trail of the Lost was her answer.
It’s an absorbing nonfiction narrative (叙事) about the three hikers, including their lives and those of the people looking for them. It also explores the history of the PCT and the rich
subculture, practices and even literature that surround it and those who undertake the 2,650-mile journey.
The book is a rich multilayered narrative that works on three different levels. The first is the story of each of the three hikers. Lankford offers a biography (传记) of each of the missing men
and shows them through the eyes of those who knew them well and those who joined the search.
Right underneath the narratives about the three hikers are the stories of everyone looking
for them. Lankford played a role in each search but she allowed friends, family and even strangers
to occupy center stage throughout most of the narrative. The story looks at the role of missing person Facebook groups in the searches and how crucial word of mouth can be. Many
warm-hearted individuals came forth and became instrumental in the searches or provided
valuable information. But Lankford also writes ofthe many who lied for no apparent reason and confused the investigations.
The narrative also shines a light on diverse aspects of the PCT. Lankford, who has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and was the first person to mountain bike the 800-mile Arizona Trail,
knows just how the PCT is physically and mentally demanding. Besides, the book explores threats from mountain lions to people with bad intentions who don’t observe the PCT’s unspoken moral rules, serving as a revelation of the well-known, hidden or ignored dangers ofthe PCT.
Written with a clear, fast-paced, straightforward style, Trail of the Lost is as full of hope and humanity as it is packed with pain, sorrow, danger and tension. Read it and you’ll find more than you seek.
28 .What led Lankford to write Trail of the Lost
A .Her love for her prior career.
B .Her strong attachment to the PCT.
C .The stress from the missing families.
D .Her investigation into hikers’ disappearance.
29 .What is presented on the second level of the book
A .Efforts by different people in searches.
B .A string of wilderness survival tips.
C .Approaches to information classification.
D .Respective stories of the three hikers.
30 .What’s the purpose of mentioning Lankford’s previous adventures
A .To promote her book.
B .To make her a celebrity.
C .To motivate hikers to challenge themselves.
D .To stress the difficulty of hiking the PCT.
31 .What can we say about the book
A .It targets single youth.

B .It’s a romantic novel.
C .It’s based on actual events.
D .It’s a detailed account of a journey.

Ada Palmer is a professor of European history at the University of Chicago. Her
science-fiction series, Terra Ignota, was inspired by 18th-century philosophers such as Voltaire
and Diderot. “I wanted to write a story that Voltaire might have written if Voltaire had be enable
to read the last 70 years’ worth of science fiction and have all of those tools available
for his use,” Palmer says in a radio program called Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Palmer says that Voltaire could actually be considered the first sci-fic writer, thanks to a
place he wrote in 1752. “Voltaire has a short story called Micromégas, in which an alien from
Saturn and an alien from a star near Sirius come to Earth. They are extremely big in size. They
explore Earth and have trouble finding life forms because to them a whale is the size of a flea (跳蚤)”, she says. They eventually realize that the tiny little spot of wood on the ground is a ship, and it’s full of living things, including humans, and they make contact. So it’s a first-contact story.
Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein is often considered the first sci-fi novel. Voltaire was writing much earlier than Shelley, so should he have the title instead It depends on your
definition (定义) of science fiction. “Micromégas doesn’t involve technology,” Palmer says, “so if you define science fiction as depending upon technology—and being about, in the Frankenstein
sense. Is man’s knowledge giving us access to powers beyond what we’ve had before What does that mean ’—it isn’t asking that. But ‘aliens and first contact’ is a very significant science
fictional element.”
So there’s no obvious answer to the question of who should be considered the first sci-fi
writer. Palmer says it’s more important to ask the question than to arrive at any particular answer. “I don’t want to argue, ‘Yes, definitely, everybody’s histories of science fiction should start with Voltaire,” she says. “But I do want to argue that everybody’s histories of science fiction will be
richer by discussing whether Voltaire is the beginning of science fiction, or whether it’s earlier or whether it’s later. Because that gets at the question of what science fiction is.”
32 .What do we know about Micromégas according to the text
A .It is widely accepted as a science-fiction story.
B .It has a big influence on today’s science fiction.
C .Its main characters have trouble finding humans.
D .Its content is about humans’ exploration of space.
33 .Why does Ada Palmer regard Voltaire as a sci-fi writer
A .One of his stories focuses on technology. B .His story involves aliens from other planets.
C.He described human-alien contact in a story. D.Her science fiction was inspired by his writing.
34 .What does Ada Palmer really want to discuss when it comes to science fiction
A .Its true origin. B .What it can cover.
C .Its colourful expressions. D .Why it is interesting.
35 .What can be a suitable title for the text
A .Ada Palmer and science fiction. B .Was Voltaire the first sci-fi author
C .Technology’s role in science fiction. D .What is science fiction really about

Science fiction, or sci-fi, with more themes related to environmental issues, overpopulation, and technological growth, has explosively (爆发地) grown in popularity since the beginning of the 21st century. 36
Some Chinese Sci-Fi History
37 Few works were translated. And the Western world had little to no taste for it.
The history of Chinese sci-fi is extensive, but the modern genre first took root during the
1900s. Authors such as Lu Xun promoted sci-fi’s early development in China and translated
multiple Western stories like Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon. Following the 1970s,
China began its own golden age of science fiction. Movies, clubs, magazines, societies and
communities formed around this genre and became increasingly popular among Chinese readers. 38
Its Entry into the West
Chinese sci-fi has become internationally recognized, mainly because of Ken Liu, who
translated The Three-Body Problem, the first contemporary Chinese sci-fi novel to be translated into English. 39 Chinese sci-fi’s introduction into the West began with this novel, and it couldn’t have been given a better international debut (亮相). Liu has become a go-to source for Chinese authors seeking international audiences.
What Makes Chinese Sci-Fi Distinctive (独特的)
The subgenre is unique for using a number of cultural and traditional objects, words, places and beliefs. 40 The stories are also different because many modern Chinese sci-fi authors were heavily affected by the events of the 20th century. Their perspectives (思维方式) and ideas on morals, ethics ( 伦理), government, politics, science and anything in between come from
standpoints previously unknown to Western readers.
A .Published in 2014, it proved to be a huge success.
B .He is a writer, translator and computer scientist.
C .Before the 2000s, Chinese sci-fi was lesser-known.
D .Chinese sci-fi also made its way to take the West by storm.
E .Similar to Western sci-fi, it has experienced the ups and downs.
F .This laid the foundation for its eventual introduction to Western readers.
G .This makes Chinese sci-fi a cultural and historical analysis of China.

Science fiction, or sci-fi, has 56 (explosive) grown in popularity since the 21st
century. Its impact on media, art, pop culture, film and technology has consolidated sci-fi as 57 unique storytelling genre.
Before the 2000s, Chinese science fiction was a lesser-known and community-oriented
genre. Few works were translated, and the western world took no interest 58 it. But the once subgenre has become internationally recognized, mainly because of Ken Liu, a writer, 59 (translate) and computer scientist. Liu has done more work than anyone else to translate Chinese sci-fi. After he translated The Three-Body Problem, it became the first contemporary
Chinese sci-fi novel in English. 60 (publish) in 2014, it proved to be a raging success.
Writing in Chinese is, of course, different from writing in English. The meanings and
references used in Chinese sci-fi are unique to the genre. In the works Liu translated, multiple
footnotes are used 61 (describe) the complexity western readers can’t understand, and they explain why a word or sentence 62 (write) in a certain way. The cultures and languages
within China each have their own subtle differences, giving translated works a foreign and distinct feel 63 no western novel can match.
The use of traditional and cultural objects, words and places in Chinese science fiction makes the genre a cultural and 64 (history) analysis of China. After reading The

Carter Druse was born in Virginia. He loved his parents, his home and the south. But he loved his country, too. And in 1861, when the US was divided by a terrible war, Carter Druse, a southerner, decided to join the army of the north.
He told his father about his decision one morning at breakfast. The old man looked at his only son for a moment, too shocked to speak. Then he said, “Please don’t tell your mother about your decision. She is sick, and we both know she has only a few weeks to live. ”
Carter’s father paused, again looking deep into his son’s eyes. “Carter, ” he said, “No matter what happens, be sure that you always do what you think is your duty. ”
Both Carter Druse and his father left the table that morning with broken hearts. And Carter

soon left his home and everyone he deeply loved behind.
One sunny afternoon, a few months later, Carter Druse was sent to guard a road which was only a few miles from an enemy’s base. It began in a forest, down in the valley, and climbed up the side of a huge rock. Anyone standing on the top of this high rock would be able to see down into the valley.
Hidden in the valley’s forest were thousands of Carter’s fellow soldiers. They had marched for thirty-six hours. Now they were resting.
Their plan was to attack by surprise their enemy on the other side of the valley. But if their enemy learned about the army hiding in the forest, the soldiers would find themselves in a trap
with no escape. That was why Carter Druse had been sent to guard the road and it was his duty to be sure that no enemy soldier spied on the valley, where the army of the north was hiding.

M: Hello, everyone. Now I’d like to talk about a novel I just read. The novel, The Red Gem, by Carol Reeves, moves along at a fast pace, but it’s not difficult to understand. From the first
page, you want to read on to find out the ending. The characters are well drawn and very
believable. In fact, you can actually imagine them as you read, especially the main character,
Phyllis, who can be a bit changeable in her behavior. The relationship between everyone in the
book is both easy to understand and yet confusing. It doesn’t, however, affect the storyline. The
story is set in the 1990s in London. The characters consist of a family, their friends and neighbors, who all have their own stories, yet they twist together and form another story. Their problems are those that we would all recognize in our own lives as they struggle to deal with them. But some of them come up with novel ways of dealing with them. The author is obviously someone who
breaks the rules to design such solutions, most of which will make readers burst into laughter. I read this book on an electrical reader. I thought I would miss the feel and smell of a traditional
book, but once I got used to the weight of the e-reader, I very much enjoyed it. It’s lightweight to carry around. You can use it anywhere. Though it’s not cheap compared to books, it will save
money in the long run.

根据第一段的“The book focuses on the development of the Chinese aerospace industry(这本书的重点是中国航空航天工业的发展)”可知,China Orbit 这本书主要讲的是中国的航天工业。故选 A。
根据第二段中“Partly based on Wu’s own experiences in the 1970s, the book is a combination of reality and fiction, and in some ways his own memoir (传记) was added into the science fiction. This innovative and unique writing method makes the book stand out and has even stirred up a debate on how to categorize it.(这本书部分取材于他自己在 20 世纪 70 年代的经历,是现实与虚构的结合,在某种程度上,他自己的回忆录被添加到科幻小说中。这种创新和独特的写作方法使这本书脱颖而出,甚至引发了一场关于如何分类的争论。)”可知,吴岩把他自己的回忆录添加到了科幻小说中。因此,吴的写作方法是他把个人经历和小说结合起来。故选 D。
23.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“We need to build Chinese science fiction step by step, with an accumulation of really great works. We need to innovate, and treat it as part of building China’s

Even Liu Cixin’s (the author who wrote the short story on which The Wandering Earth is based) The Three Body Problem — which is currently quite
popular — didn’t have many readers until it was translated into English and won the Hugo Award in 2015.
My parents were the type who tried to steer me in the
direction of non-fiction and the classics. They believed that science fiction and fantasy were
“unrealistic nonsense” and would “rot my brain.”
Actually, great science fiction writers do their
research. More often than not, one can learn a great deal about science and its possible
development from reading science fiction.
根据上文“The world is changing. There may very well be a time when Earth is no longer able to sustain the entire population. We could be living on Mars or in giant spaceships; perhaps we will be forced to move Earth to a new solar system just like The Wandering Earth. (世界在变化。很可能有一天,地球不再能够维持所有的人口。我们可以住在火星上,也可以住在巨大的宇宙飞船里;也许我们将被迫把地球搬到一个新的太阳系,就像《流浪地球》一
样。)”所以 these scenarios 指的上文的这些设想,所以 scenarios 意为“设想,想法” ,和 ideas同义,故选 C 项。

29 .细节理解题。根据第五段“Right underneath the narratives about the three hikers are the

stories of everyone looking for them.”(在这三个徒步旅行者的故事背后,是每个人寻找他们的故事。) 故选 A 项。
The narrative also shines a light on diverse aspects of the PCT.
Lankford, who has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and was the first person to mountain bike
the 800-mile Arizona Trail, knows just how the PCT is physically and mentally demanding.
Besides, the book explores threats from mountain lions to people with bad intentions who don’t
observe the PCT’s unspoken moral rules, serving as a revelation of the well-known, hidden or
根据第一段“She found herself unable to turn away from the three separate cases despite challenges in the inquiry into them.”(她发现自己无法回避这三个独立的案件,尽管对它们的调查面临挑战。)和第四段“The book is a rich multilayered narrative that works on three different levels. The first is the story of each of the three hikers.”(这是一部引人入胜的非虚构故事,讲述了三位徒步旅行者的生活,包括他们的生活以及寻找他们的人的生活。)

Voltaire has a short story called Micromégas, in which an alien from Saturn and an alien from a star near Sirius come to Earth. They are extremely big in size.
They explore Earth and have trouble finding life forms because to them a whale is the size of a
flea (跳蚤), she says. “They eventually realize that the tiny little spot of wood on the ground is a
ship, and it’s full of living things, including humans, and they make contact.(伏尔泰有一个短篇故事叫《Micromégas》,讲的是一个来自土星的外星人和一个来自天狼星附近恒星的外星人来到地球。

Micromégas doesn’t involve technology,” Palmer says, “so if you define science fiction as depending upon technology—and being about, in the Frankenstein sense,
Is man’s knowledge giving us access to powers beyond what we’ve had before What does that
mean ’—it isn’t asking that. But ‘aliens and first contact’ is a very significant science fictional
根据最后一段“So there’s no obvious answer to the question of who should be considered the first sci-fi writer. Palmer says it’s more important to ask the question than to arrive at any particular answer. “I don’t want to argue, ‘Yes, definitely, everybody’s histories of science
fiction should start with Voltaire,” she says. “But I do want to argue that everybody’s histories of
science fiction will be richer by discussing whether Voltaire is the beginning of science fiction, or whether it’s earlier or whether it’s later. Because that gets at the question of what science fiction
Palmer says that Voltaire could actually be considered the first
sci-fic writer, thanks to a place he wrote in 1752.( 帕尔默说,伏尔泰实际上可以被认为是第一位科学作家,这要归功于他在 1752 年写的一篇文章)”以及第三段“Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein is often considered the first sci-fi novel. Voltaire was writing much earlier than
Shelley, so should he have the title instead
