The Seychelles — that remote island chain off the coast of northern Africa is heaven for scuba divers (水肺潜水). With more than 100 islands, most of which are uninhabited, and a
relatively small amount of tourists impacting the oceans and beaches, the Seychelles has some truly best scuba diving.
Fisherman’s Cove Reef
If you’re a beginner diver who loves gentle drop-offs and sea turtles, make sure
Fisherman’s Cove Reefis on your scuba diving radar. The site is very popular as there’s rarely a current, it’s very shallow, and has a colorful reef with everything from eagle rays to small leaf
fish, which can be very difficult to find against the seagrass and coral.
Ennerdale Wreck
If you love wreck diving, head right for the Ennerdale, a British oil tanker that accidentally sunk in 1970. Because of the medium-to-strong current and depth, it’s for divers with advanced
open water cert. They’ll be able to swim around the wreck’s propellers, penetrate the frame, and likely see reef sharks and the occasional bull shark.
Baie Ternay Marine Park
The shallow, protected area of ocean has healthy and varied coral, and a lively reef. Both snorkelers and beginner divers are likely to see sea turtles grazing on the seagrass, coaching reef fish, and small eels poking out of the sandy ocean floor.
Aldabra Atoll
It doesn’t get much more remote than the Aldabra Atoll, a UNESCO site. The coral reef
continues underwater, which makes all the island’s dive sites stunning. Advanced divers can do
drift dives in a channel with a chance of seeing sharks, while beginners can stay closer to the reefs, checking the various species of marine life in the Indian Ocean off their must-see list. The island
is home to nearly 100,000 giant tortoises, as well as several other rare species
21 .Why is the Seychelles known as heaven for scuba divers

Finally, in March of 1703, the Adventure set sail for India. The winds were good until we
got near Madagascar, an island off the east coast of Africa. Then a strong wind began to blow. We were trapped in the wind for twenty days. After many hours, the wind finally stopped and the sea became quieter. The storm had blown the Adventure hundreds of kilometers to the east.
“Where are we ” I asked the captain.
“I can’t tell for sure.” He said, “we are running out of water. We must reach land soon to fill our water barrels (桶).” Many days passed and we saw nothing but the sea. One morning,
before everyone died of thirst, a sailor cried out, “Land!” Everyone on the ship was silent for a second. And quickly the ship sailed closer to the land. The sailors suddenly became turnultuous and all cheered.
“You men,” said the captain to the sailors, “take the rowboats and go. Fill the water barrels with fresh water.”
“Captain,” I said, “may I go with them to take a look at this place ”
“Of course,” he replied. “You can tell me later what it is like.”
When the rowboats reached the coast, one of the sailors said, “we will have to walk along the coast to look for fresh water.”
“I’m going to take a little walk,” I told them. “I will meet you back here in an hour.”
I walked about a kilometer, enjoying being on land again. Then I turned and walked back to meet the sailors.
试卷第 5 页,共 14 页

On August 15,a team of researchers and conservationists set off on a two-year voyage from Plymouth, England,on board the Dutch tall ship Oosterschelde. They will sail more than 46,000
miles(74,000 kilometers)and drop anchor in 32 different ports across four continents, before ending their journey in Falmouth,U.K.
The expedition, named Darwin200,comes more than 190 years after Charles Darwin sailed the globe collecting specimens and shaping ideas of his theory of evolution. The team will closely follow Darwin’s original voyage aboard the HMS Beagle, which set off on Dec.27,1831,and
returned to England on Oct.2,1836.
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
Darwin was 22 years old when he joined the expedition with the intention of seeing the
world before joining the church. But during the trip, Darwin became fascinated by the wide range of different species he encountered, which eventually led to him creating his theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin’s account of the journey, published after his return, also helped him establish his reputation as one of Victorian Britain’s academic elite.
The main aim of the new expedition is to train and inspire 200 young environmentalists, between 18 and 25 years old, who will each spend a week on board the Oosterschelde studying threatened species that Darwin encountered on his voyage.
“We wanted to create a similarly transformative experience(for the young
naturalists),”Stewart MePherson, mission director of Darwin200,said in a statement. They have” the potential to be the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)and
conservation leaders of tomorrow,” he added.
Every week, the team will broadcast interactive “nature hour” sessions live from the ship for people across the world. They will also collect important data on ocean plastics and coral reef health,as well as survey seabirds, whales and dolphins.
28 .What can we learn about Darwin200 from the first two paragraphs
A .It takes along 200 naturalists. B .It takes a shortcut for the journey.
C .It is to mark Darwin’s Beagle voyage. D .It lasts longer than Darwin’s voyage.
29 .How did Darwin’s voyage affect him
A .It established his writing style. B .He gained a sense of adventure.
C .He earned great fame and fortune D .It changed the direction of his life.
30 .What is Stewart McPherson’s wish for the young naturalists
A .To be more creative. B .To keep an open mind.
C .To develop scientific skills. D .To challenge Darwin’s theory.
31 .What does the team’s research work focus on
A .Ocean conservation. B .The exploration of ocean.
C .The art of navigation. D .Scientific education.

A 36-year-old man is attempting to set a new record by rowing 5,000 miles solo from
试卷第 7 页,共 14 页
Hawaii to Australia while dedicating his journey to saving the planet.
Tez Steinberg, of Boulder, Colorado, plans to leave Hawaii on December 20 on his solo trip across the Pacific Ocean. Actually, it’s the second leg of an adventure that began in 2020 when he rowed solo for 71 days from Monterey, California, to Oahu, Hawaii.
Steinberg began to experience depression while he was in college. At the time, he found a solution by participating in endurance sports. “It helped me feel better,” he said. “But as I went farther and farther, pushing myself through marathons and triathlons, I discovered this belief in myself that I’m so much stronger than I thought I was.”
However, in 2016, his life took a big turn after the sudden death of his dad. The blow
caused him to challenge himself even more by solo rowing across an ocean. After successfully
completing the task without any prior professional experience, Steinberg realized he could use his story to inspire other people to believe in themselves and their potential to change and grow.
Recalling the first journey at sea, he said, “I was so surprised by how beautiful the ocean
was, and also how much plastic I saw. So it was that realization at sea that led me to want to go
back out again.” Inspired by his first expedition, Steinberg’s new mission is to focus on ocean
conservation, and specifically ocean plastics. “All the plastic I saw at sea was just heartbreaking,” he said.
The upcoming voyage will be part of an attempt to break a Guinness World Record.
Nevertheless, breaking records isn’t his priority. “Personally, although a world record is exciting, that’s not why I’m in it. The world record is fun for media attention, but through it we can get
more donations, support and action for ocean plastics,” Steinberg said.
32 .What can we learn about Steinberg from paragraphs 3 and 4
A .He suffered academically.
B .He was expert in extreme sports.
C .He gained confidence from motivating others.
D .He turned to challenging tasks in face of difficulties.
33 .Why did Steinberg go on the first adventure at sea
A .To recover from the state of depression.
B .To relieve the pain of his father’s passing.
C .To inspire other people to fulfil their dreams.
试卷第 8 页,共 14 页
D .To challenge himself to achieve the impossible.
34 .What is Steinberg’s main purpose in setting off for the second expedition
A .To break a world record. B .To establish a good reputation.
C .To contribute to ocean protection. D .To urge governments to take action.
35 .Which of the following best describes Steinberg
A .Stubborn and ambitious. B .Self-centered and sympathetic.
C .Determined and knowledgeable. D .Responsible and courageous.

In 1999, journalist Nicholas D. Kristof reported a surprising encounter on a tiny African
island. Here, Kristof met a number of elderly men who told him that they were descendants of
Chinese sailors many centuries ago. Their ancestors had traded with local Africans, who had given them giraffes to take back to China. 36
Six centuries ago, a large number of Chinese ships crossed the sea, then travelled west to East Africa. 37 These seven great expeditions brought a vast web of trading links under Chinese government control.
38 Most of the trading involved spices (香料), wood, and medicines. Zheng He
brought them back to the capital. Although these goods were mainly presented to the emperor for his consumption and disposal, foreign ambassadors who came to China were permitted to trade
with locals in the capital for handsome profits, which also allowed ordinary Chinese to benefit from international trade.
39 In the regions they visited, Zheng He and his fleet (船队) remained a long-lasting theme in popular Southeast Asia folk tales. Two surviving records of the expeditions provide
detailed accounts of unique Chinese navigation technologies of the time, leaving Chinese rich maritime legacy (遗产) to later generations.
However, the Chinese expedition never sought to establish colonial rule over these oceans by military force. 40 China’s maritime dominance disappeared suddenly in the 1430s
because of domestic changes, and the overseas expeditions were eventually ended by the court.

All this happened only decades prior to the occurrence of the great age of European discovery and exploration.
A .Seven times, the treasure fleets set off for the unknown.
B .Zheng He’s great voyage started at the port of Nanjing.
C .Aside from the economic impact, there was more cultural print.
D .The actual economic impact of the expedition was difficult to evaluate.
E .Zheng He traded China’s products for foreign luxuries and daily products.
F .It was intended to facilitate international and trade relationships with others.
G .If it’s true, this remote village is evidence of an astonishing episode of maritime exploration in China.

More than 20 hours earlier, my friend Emma and I had stood at the entrance to the cave. We laughed and joked as I climbed down the steep mouth and she followed. Six of us had gone on that camping trip, but after a full day of exploring caves, the others had gone back to the campsite to
eat. Emma and I decided to explore one more cave.
The mud of the cave floor was soft and sticky as we snaked our way through the tunnel. The air was damp and heavy. As the passage twisted through the earth, it became smaller. Then, suddenly, after a tight squeeze, I came into a larger room.
“Once you make it past this narrow spot you can almost stand,” I told Emma, as I stretched out my arms and legs and enjoyed the big space. “Alright, I’m almost th...” Emma’s sentence was cut short. I turned around. “Are you alright ” I asked. All I could see was her face, and her eyes
were full of fear. “I don’t think so,” she said. “I’m stuck.”
Emma and I tried everything we could to free her. But it became apparent that we needed help. I took out my cell phone to call my other four friends, but there was no signal. I couldn’t go to seek help because Emma was stuck between me and the cave mouth. That was why we were so relieved when we heard voices behind us. A beam oflight shot down the tunnel.
“What’s going on here ” rang a young man’s voice. “We need help,” I shouted. “She’s
stuck.” “I’ve got two buddies with me,” he said. “They can go to find a park ranger (公园管理员), but I’ll stay here and see if I can help from this side.”

M: Why does the area get so many storms
W: The Andes Mountains are on one side of the river, and the Caribbean Sea is on the other side. Cool mountain winds move into the valley and hit warm sea air, creating the perfect conditions for lightning.
M: Are the people there afraid of getting hit
W: Surprisingly, the chances are pretty small. In the US, about one of every 12,000 people gets hit in their lifetime.
M: Yeah, but we’re talking about an area that gets struck by lightning about 70% of the time.
W: True. This article says that near the Catatumbo River, one in three people gets struck every
