Today, it is one of Italy’s most important cities and an extremely romantic travel
destination, where you can sit on a boat alongside miles of winding canals (运河). There are, in fact, 150 canals with more than 400 bridges that connect Venice’s 118 small islands in the

I have well travelled in Spain and visited a good number of Spanish cities. However, no city will ever quite match Cadiz, where I spent six months studying as a student.
Before that, I knew very little about Cadiz but I decided to take a risk and explore it. Well, the risk certainly paid off.
试卷第 4 页,共 13 页
Cadiz, Europe’s oldest city, hangs off Spain’s southern coast on a peninsula (半岛),
surrounded almost entirely by water. As you leave the shady streets ofthe historical old city and explore more of it, you are met with vast areas of the blue Atlantic Ocean and white sandy
beaches, which in my opinion are some of the best in Spain!
One of the great things about Cadiz is the wonderful, rich culture of food and drink. There are little tapa (小吃) bars lining every street and most will serve tapas for around 1.50—2 euros, meaning you can try a whole variety of Andalusian dishes.
Cadiz has also come to be known as “The Singing City”. It comes from the annual carnival (狂欢节), one of the biggest in Europe. A very large number of people go to Cadiz to see it.
During those ten days, Cadiz’s narrow streets are filled with the sound of singing as musical groups fight for a place in the contest, which takes place on the last Saturday of carnival. The songs perfectly show the sense of humor of the Gaditanos, who, besides being so warm and welcoming, are said to have the best sense of humor in Spain!
That is my experience of Cadiz: a wonderful, typically Andalusian city which is often
overlooked but well worth a visit. I am currently living in Huelva, just a short drive from Cadiz, so please pay attention to my next sharing!
24 .What does the word “that” underlined in paragraph 2 refer to
A .Competing in a match. B .Studying in Cadiz.
C .Teaching a student. D .Becoming an explorer.
25 .What does the third paragraph mainly talk about
A .The geographic position and scenery of Cadiz.
B .The beautiful life of people living in Cadiz.
C .The unknown origin and long history of Cadiz.
D .The author’s complex attitude towards Cadiz.
26 .Why is Cadiz called “The Singing City”
A .A number of local people enjoy humorous songs.
B .Many grand carnivals attract well-known singers.
C .Singing is everywhere during a big annual carnival.
D .A lot of singing competitions take place each year.
27 .From which is the text most probably taken
试卷第 5 页,共 13 页
A .A geography textbook. B .A post on the Internet.
C .A travel brochure. D .An encyclopedia.

In recent years, wooden buildings have reached new heights, with soaring(高耸的)wooden skyscrapers completed or underway in countries like Norway, Switzerland and AustraliA.
Sweden, likewise, has come up with a plan—building the world’s biggest wooden city. As the world’s largest urban construction project in wood, Stockholm Wood City will be built in
Sweden’s capital, Stockholm in 2025.
“By using wood, the project is expected to reduce carbon footprint by up to 40%,compared with building in concrete and steel,” says Annica An s, CEO of Atrium Ljungberg, a Swedish
urban development company. Some people may have concerns over fire risks posed by wooden buildings, but experts say engineered timber(木材)can resist fire as well. As with other modern construction projects using wood, Wood City will still use some concrete and steel in places like the foundations, but the overall amounts will be greatly reduced.
“The construction will not be as noisy as it is built from concrete and bricks,” adds Ms
An s. This makes wooden buildings particularly suitable for urban redevelopment in general,
since putting them up is less likely to annoy the neighbours. It should also be profitable. Ms An s is looking for a return on investment of 20% or better.
The world’s largest wooden city is supposed to make commute (通勤) easier and shorter, decreasing emissions from transportation. The website for the project describes Stockholm Wood City as a “five minute city”. As An s concluded, “We want to create an environment where our customers, who will live and work here, can participate in the development and design of the city district of the future. ”

As a boy, I was a little ashamed of my hometown. Visitors almost always made unfriendly: remarks about the distinct smell as they approached the town. However, since I am now working in the tourism industry, I have realized the significance of that smell to the town and even to the
world. This is where the Canadian oil industry originated, growing from oil springs to a local miracle in Petrolia.
The “black gold” those first pioneer drillers pumped (用泵输送) out of the ground in the 1860s was the foundation on which our little town was built. In the 1880s, with a population of 5, 000, Petrolia was one of the richest towns in Canada, all because of the foul-smelling substance extracted (提取) from the ground.
Many amazing stories about these great people have been written. Those adventurous
individuals brought their hard-earned industry skills to the far corners ofthe globe, and assisted in the development of major oil fields around the world. Past richness can be seen through out the
town There is a story hidden behind each street.
A few historical industrial buildings also remain complete, as they’ve been preserved for a century. Fairbank Heavy Hardware and the Oil Well Supply Company continue to provide the
tools and materials required to serve many oil wells in the area that are still pumping and
producing the: precious goods. These are just a few of the amazing structures built in a time of wealth and glory.
The present atmosphere of the town is inviting and enthusiastic. Walking tours, a variety of restaurants, unique stores and professional summer theatres and special events throughout the year make it a popular destination for many people.
No longer ashamed, I now smile with pride when I think of my hometown. As our new slogan states, “You’ll Be Surprised!”

Last summer vacation, I decided to visit my best friend in Barcelona. Aline sent me a
screenshot (屏幕截图) of the ticket she was about to buy for me, from Saturday to Wednesday. I approved of the selection, she bought it, and I packed. The next day I headed to the airport, a little later than planned.
When I got to the airport with only my carry-on bag, it was 35 minutes before the gate
closed. I headed directly to the security checkpoint. The electronic machine marked a big fat red × and told me to see an airline official. I did what I was told to do and stood in line at the airline
counter (柜台), while one of the only two ladies available left. My heart was racing as I kept looking at the clock. A man, loud and rude, arrived with an airport employee and cut ahead, shouting at the lady and taking 10 minutes of my precious time.
By the time I arrived at the counter it was 8:02 and the gate closed at 8:05. The lady asked me what was wrong, and I told her. She then scanned (扫描) my ticket and told me the problem was that the gate had closed. I complained and told her I had arrived earlier.
“Where were you then ”
“In line, waiting for you.”
She didn’t say anything else, except to help change my ticket. I didn’t panic; instead I went into action mode. I searched for other flights. Just one flight would leave in 35 minutes. I was
already at the airport, so I bought the ticket. I then tried to check in: check-in closes 40 minutes before the flight.
I took a deep breath, stopped running around, grabbed a taxi home, and bought my third ticket from Sunday to Sunday, extending my stay.

67.I calledAline and we had a laugh about me missing the first flight in my life. I have always been a super responsible perfectionist. I’d flown more than 100 times in the past year, and during most of the flights I traveled by myself. I had never missed a flight. Never. But I also know I need a good amount of travel humor to keep my nerves under control. After three tickets, I finally
arrived at Barcelona and had an amazing time there with Aline. But what happened next was totally unexpected to me.
Infact I did not miss my flight, but instead arrived a whole week early. I realized this fact when I got an email on Friday reminding me of checking in for my flight the next morning. Laughing so hard, I handed over the phone with my ticket on it to Aline so that she could check the date. After laughing for ten minutes straight, I immediately called my family to tell them about this funny
travel story. Sometimes, we should just laugh at those unlucky travel accidents and be flexible during travel.
