Once a rich and clever boy had practically everything a boy could want, so he was not
interested in most toys. Because he couldn’t get a very old mirror, he convinced his parents to buy it from a mysterious old man. When the mirror arrived home, the boy went to see his reflection in it. His face looked very sad indeed. He tried smiling and making funny faces, but his reflection
continued with its sad expression. “What a terrible mirror! It’s the first time I’ve seen a mirror that didn’t work properly!” the boy jumped violently.
That same afternoon he went into the street to play and bought a few toys, but on his way to the park he saw a little girl who was crying her heart out. The girl was crying so much and looked so lonely that the rich boy went over to help her and to see what had happened. The little girl told him that she had lost her parents.
Together the two set off in search of the girl’s parents. As the little girl wouldn’t stop
crying, the boy spent his money buying her sweets to cheer her up. Finally, after much walking, they found her parents who were much worried and were looking for her everywhere.
The rich boy said goodbye to them. As it was getting late, he decided to head for home,
without being able to play. At home, he went to his room, and noticed a shining light in the corner, the same corner he had left the mirror in. Seeing this, he went over to the mirror, and realized that the light was coming from his own body, so radiant (闪亮的) with happiness he had become.
And so he understood the mystery of that mirror, the only mirror which could faithfully
reflect the true joy of its owner. He realized it was true. He felt very happy at having helped that little girl. And since then, each morning when he looked in that mirror and failed to see a special shine, he knew what he had to do to bring it back.

In 1955, when Rosa Parks refused an order to give up her seat to a white passenger and
moved to the back of the bus, her incredible act of resistance became the fuel for the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Led by none other than Martin Luther King Jr., it led to the civil rights movement in America.
Known as “the Mother of the Modern Civil Rights Movement”, Parks moved to Detroit in 1957 where she continued to fight for civil rights. In 1994, at the age of 81, Parks was attacked and robbed in her home.
When word of the attack got out, Judge Damon Keith contacted Mike Ilitch, a real estate
试卷第 6 页,共 13 页
(地产) developer. Upon hearing of the incident, Mike Ilitch offered to pay for safer housing for Parks until her death.
Hidden from public knowledge, and known only to a select few individuals, Ilitch’s
kindness towards Rosa Parks remained a secret for many years. It wasn’t until an article was
published in the Sports Business Daily in 2014 that the secret came out. And it didn’t gain popular attention until it resurfaced after Ilitch’s death in 2017.
The article contained a photograph of Keith holding a copy of a cheque.
“It’s for $2,000, dated November the first, 1994,” Keith said. “It’s from Little Caesars
Enterprises to Riverfront Apartments. It’s important that people know what Mr. Mike Ilitch did for Ms. Rosa Parks because it’s symbolic of what he has always done for the people of our city.”
It wasn’t Ilitch’s only act of giving. Throughout his life, the billionaire made significant
contributions to various charitable causes. In 1985, he established the Little Caesars Love Kitchen which provides food for those in need.
Mike Ilitch and Rosa Parks may have come from two completely different worlds and lived very different lives, but there is one common thread that ties them together—commitment to

Michael Todd wore the same clothes every day for the first three weeks of school. When the other kids began to notice that he was wearing the same black pants and blue, and gray

long-sleeve shirt day after day, Todd, a freshman at Martin Luther King Jr. College Preparatory High School in Memphis, became the target of laughter. But there was little Todd could do. His mother simply couldn’t afford to buy him new clothes.
Two of the kids piling on were Antwan Garrett and Kristopher Graham, a pair of freshman football players. But over time, they realized that their unfavorable words felt like bullying (欺凌) and seemed to be slowly crushing (击垮) Todd’s spirit. Something finally clicked (被突然领悟) . “I felt like I needed to do something,” Graham told CBS News. So he and Garrett hatched a plan. They went home and hunted through their own drawers and closets.
The next day at school, they met Todd at their third-period class and asked him to come
into the hall. Todd was understandably nervous about being called out by the larger boys. “He
wasn’t smiling or anything, and I was like,’I think this is going to make you smile,’” Graham says. “I told him, ‘We’re in the same third period, and I apologize for laughing at you, and I want to
give something to you to make it up.’” He then handed Todd a bag. Inside were clean shirts and shorts, plus a brand-new pair of New Balance sneakers.
Todd was blown away. “I was very happy,” he told CBS News. “Surprised and upset,
completely.” And Todd got much more than a new wardrobe. He no longer sits alone at lunch. Now he eats with his new friends, Garrett and Graham.
“I’ve been bullied my entire life,” Todd told CBS News. Reflecting on the day Garrett and Graham called him into the hall, he called it “the best day of my entire life, basically.”

We sat on the bus waiting while other passengers piled on. A blond-haired girl, about
fifteen years old, took the seat in front of us. The bus driver followed behind her. He demanded her fare (车费).
“You should pay $40, young lady,” the driver said.
“I paid already. Yesterday, online.” the girl said.
“No, no record of it,” the bus driver pointed to the paper in his hand and waved it in her face. “See No pay. You pay, or you must get off,” the bus driver pointed to the exit door.
“But I don’t have money. And I paid already,” the girl insisted.
The bus driver picked up his mobile phone and made a call to find out if there had been an error with the paperwork. And a few minutes later, he cut the call and said to the girl. “You
haven’t paid. You must pay now.”
试卷第 12 页,共 13 页
“But please, I don’t have any money on me now. I must get to Los Angeles today. Please…” the girl begged. Tears streamed down her face.
John and I had boarded the bus heading to Los Angeles. I was excited about experiencing Los Angeles. But while I was sitting there comfortably in my seat, thinking about my next
adventure, this girl was in tears, with a man standing in front of her to demand money.
I wasn’t sure what I should do. Was she telling the truth It wouldn’t be the first time that
someone had asked for money by telling a sad story that turned out untrue. Was she really short of money Maybe the bus driver would show some sympathy and allow her to sort the payment out later
But no, the bus driver continued to demand that she pay $40 or get off the bus. The girl insisted that she didn’t have money for the fare and had no one she could contact for help. It seemed that the driver would throw her off the bus.

And now we bring you a positive story from the autumn season. Senior citizens living in a retirement home found that they were unable to take their regular walks along the riverside. The
reason Leaves had fallen from the trees, making it impossible for people with wheelchairs or
walking sticks to get by. One of the people was Jay Garrett, who told his grandson Barry about the issue. The next day, Barry asked his school’s head teacher if he could address the school. Barry
asked for volunteers to clear the paths. To his amazement, almost all of the school, including
teachers, offered to help. So the next Saturday, they arrived at the riverside and cleared the paths, sweeping the leaves into large bags. Rather than throwing them away, Barry and his classmates took the bags to a nearby farm, where they could be used to make healthy soil to grow crops. The senior citizens were so grateful to the school children that they threw them a party in the
retirement home. Such a moving story! Hopefully they can come to clear my driveway when it snows in winter. I’m Wally West for Channel 4 News.
