Christopher Thomas, 27, was a writer by night and a teacher by day when he noticed he was always tired and was losing weight fast. Diagnosed with diabetes(糖尿病), Thomas would need to inject himself with insulin(胰岛素) three times a day for the rest of his life or risk nerve damage, blindness, and even death. And if that weren't bad enough, he had no health insurance.
After a month of feeling upset, Thomas decided he'd better find a way to fight back. He left Canton, Michigan for New York, got a job waiting tables, nicknamed himself the Diabetic
Rockstar , and created , a free online community for diabetics and their loved ones—a place where over 1,100 people share personal stories, information, and resources.
Jason Swencki’s son, Kody, was diagnosed with type diabetes at six. Father and son visit
the online children's forums(论坛) together most evenings. "Kody gets so excited, writing to kids from all over," says Swencki, one of the site's volunteers. "They know what he's going through, so he doesn't feel alone."
Kody is anything but alone: Diabetes is now the seventh leading cause of death in the
United States, with 24 million diagnosed cases. And more people are being diagnosed at younger ages.
These days, Thomas's main focus is his charity(慈善机构), Fight It, which provides
medicines and supplies to people—225 to date—who can't afford a diabetic's huge expenses.
Fight-it.org has raised about $23,000—in products and in cash. In May, Thomas will hold the first annual Diabetic Rockstar Festival in the Caribbean.
Even with a staff of 22 volunteers, Thomas often devotes up to 50 hours a week to his
cause, while still doing his full-time job waiting tables. "Of the diabetes charities out there, most are putting money into finding a cure," says Bentley Gubar, one of Rockstar's original members. "But Christopher is the only person I know saying people need help now."

Pat Patterson, a pilot for 25 years, had never met anyone like the handsome young man in the wheelchair who faced him at the Medford, Oregon, airport on July 28, 1976. Mike Henderson, a quadriplegic (四肢瘫痪者), wanted flying lessons.
As a 22--year--old Coast Guardsman eight years before, Henderson had fallen off a dock
and landed on a floating log, breaking two of his bones. Doctors said that he would probably never walk again, let alone fly. “Here was this doctor telling me how it was going to be,” he says, “but
no one was going to limit my freedom to try.”
Henderson parked his wheelchair next to the airplane and began to climb up onto the wing. He injured his elbow on the way, and after a great struggle, finally managed to pull himself into
the airplane’s pilot’s seat. In the flight office, Pat Patterson watched in disbelief. “He crawled his way up that wing!” he says. “It took him 45 minutes. When I went out, he was sitting in the pilot’s seat, bleeding from his injured elbow all over the place. When I saw him go through that much
pain, I knew nothing could stop him.”
Now everything was up to the instructor and the student, and together they set about solving each problem as it arose. A small piece of carpet gave Henderson traction (摩擦力) to climb the
slippery wing. A headset freed his hands from the radio microphone, and the two men developed a moving bar that enabled Henderson to operate the airplane more easily.
Three weeks and eight flying hours after the first lesson, Henderson and Patterson happily phoned Dr. Stoddard — Henderson’s physician. At the airport, as the physician looked on,
Henderson quickly wheeled himself around the airplane, doing a thorough, professional ground
check. With Patterson and Dr. Stoddard on board, he went through his preflight instrument check. Minutes later, engine starting, the plane rolled down the runway and took off into the gray sky.

I was born in Detroit. My father, Robert, made his first fortune selling paint to the car industry. My mother, Hazel, was a telephone operator.
Our house in Detroit was beautiful, right off the Detroit Golf Club. We spent much of the time fishing and riding horses. It was one of the few times in my life that I had my father’s
undivided attention.
When I was 7, my parents decided to move to Los Angeles. But my parents didn’t move out to L. A. immediately. Instead, they remained in Detroit for a year. I was sent on ahead, probably
so my parents could enjoy their social life without disruption. My father put me on a train in
Detroit, tipped a porter to keep an eye on me and when I arrived I was taken to the Hollywood Military Academy, where I had been registered.
My father had been so successful that he was able to retire. I admired his success, but he
was strict and didn’t hesitate to punish or hit me for the slightest offence. I came to hate him, and I became rebellious(叛逆的). The four boarding schools I attended were like an extended
Hollywood family. Many stars sent their kids there so they could work on movies without
distraction. I became connected to the film industry through my friendships. I already was
determined to become an actor. My father hoped I’d join his company, but I wanted nothing to do

with it or him. Instead, I decided to try my luck in the picture business.
In 1950, when I was 20, I had a screen test. When the head of the studio, Darryl Zanuck,
saw the test, he signed me. The day I found out, I felt absolutely great. Suddenly I was recognized. Through the years, my father voiced doubt about whether I’d make it. My mother’s support was
our secret and canceled out his discouragement. At the end of his life in 1964, my father finally told me, “Nice job” about my film work. That’s the praise I got.

During my graduate studies, countless workshops taught me one thing: To make it in
science, one must design and carry out big projects. As I established my own research lab, a senior colleague encouraged me to try something big. So when I landed an associate professor position, my goal seemed obvious: I should perform big projects. This was the only way to lay a foundation for a successful academic research career. The path, however, would not be as clear as I had
pictured.
试卷第 7 页,共 14 页
When I contacted famous researchers to suggest cooperating, as is typically required for
high-profile projects, they frequently replied enthusiastically to start, agreeing my project sounded interesting and promising. But when they learned I hadjust established my lab, they became
skeptical and hesitant, ultimately saying no. And when I sought grant funding, my lack of
experience and reputation was cited as a reason to deny support for my ambitious proposals.
I spent about two years being stuck in this mindset, excited about my big ideas but making little actual progress, leading to frustration and depression. As I neared my breaking point, I began to ask myself: Were big projects really the only route
When I shifted to small projects, I became brave enough to step into fields I was not
familiar with. By reading papers in new areas, I found creative ideas to pursue. When I discussed these adventurous, low-cost projects with early-career researchers, they were glad to cooperate.
We secured funding. When I published papers out of these projects, they were not exciting enough to make headlines— but for me, it was a moment of joy and self-contentment.
It has now been 3 years since I embraced this “small” approach. Sometimes senior
colleagues say I’m wasting time with projects that aren’t important enough. But I disagree. When I do these studies, I also find clues for future big projects. Going forward, I will still commit part
of my time to exploring small projects, which I think can help pursue more fundamental questions.
32 .What is the author trying to do with big projects
A .Pursue his graduate studies.
B .Seek a route to academic success.
C .Apply for an associate professorship.

34 .How did the author carry out his small project
A .By publishing influential papers.
B .By getting young colleagues’ funding.
C .By exploring and initiating new ideas.
D .By cooperating with senior colleagues.

Sometimes, we pour in our best efforts, only to see the worst outcomes. It can be frustrating and demotivating, and slipping into a negative mindset is easy.
In the event of failure, it is very tempting to self-blame or self-pity for what happened. 36 Here’s what you can do to make yourself feel good when things don’t work out.
Acknowledge Your Emotions
When things don’t go according to plan, it’s natural to feel disappointed, frustrated, or sad. 37 Recognize your feelings and accept that it’s okay to feel that way. By allowing
yourself to experience your emotions, you can process them better and move on.
While it is good to recover quickly, the grieving phase is a necessity you shouldn’t skip. People who deny that they failed and that nothing went wrong only find themselves in more
complicated situations and a more fractured emotional state. Feel sad, breathe, take a few walks, and think that acknowledging the issue means 50% of your problem is already solved.
Practice Self-Care
38 Grab some time to engage in activities that make you happy and relaxed. Take a long bath, walk in nature, meditate, read a book, or watch your favorite movie. When we feel
good about ourselves, we are better equipped to deal with life’s challenges.
Surround Yourself with Positivity
Surround yourself with people who inspire you, while being true. 39 You could also join a support group or an online community of like-minded individuals who share your
interests.
40 While you see yourself as a strong person who can handle negativity, it’s best
试卷第 9 页,共 14 页
to withdraw from the chaos during recovery. Avoid social media and dealing with colleagues who often trigger negativity.
A .Take a step back and evaluate what went wrong.
B .Don’t suppress your emotions; instead, acknowledge them.
C .However, it’s crucial to pick yourself up and move forward.
D .Spend time with family and friends who love and support you.
E .Self-care is the key to healthy mental and physical well-being.
F .Celebrate the small wins with friends who are happy to see you triumph.
G .Having a positive support system can help you stay motivated and focused.

One day my teacher asked me, “Are you going to try ” I it off and told him that he couldn’t pay me to do it. , he encouraged me until finally I agreed to do it.

Niesha could not forget the way she froze in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had
divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today was Niesha’s turn. However, her hands shook so violently that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts kindly ended Niesha’s part ofthe presentation even though she did clearly not finish. He also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give
up on yourself.” Then Mr. Roberts hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage ” Niesha nodded, grateful for the chance. She went as quickly as

she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming
from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha ”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class ” Momma asked. She set the timer (计时器) and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with
newspaper clippings (剪报) and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon (丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first-- I was not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”

challenge as going up. You need to be able to read a map properly — a wrong turn would lead to dangerous places to go down in winter. When I finally came back to the tent, I couldn’t say I
really enjoyed the experience, but at least I made it to the top.

Hearing Momma’s words, Niesha stared at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought.
She pictured the scene where her mom tried her best to overcome her fears and gathered all her
courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. And Momma, aware of Neisha’s inner
confusion and anxiety, reached out her hand to tie the blue ribbon onto Niesha’s wrist with a sweet smile, saying she would be with her all the time. Greatly touched and determined to find her
courage, Neisha stood in front of the mirror, constantly practicing from pronunciation to tone and even each gesture. “Try harder, and I can make it!” she kept cheering herself up.
The next day Niesha again walked to the front ofthe classroom to give her
presentation. Still shy and nervous, she customarily lowered her head to avoid making eye
contact with others, numb there for seconds. But shortly afterwards, courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the blue ribbon. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, straightened her shoulders and then got started, “Dear fellow students, ...” While presenting
herself, Niesha glanced at Mr. Roberts smiling at her and listening attentively. A spark of joy
flashing across her eyes, she knew for sure that she had found her courage, in the mill and in the adversity.
