father came into my mind. He was a sometimes difficult, always determined man.
In my early memories, I was sitting at the kitchen table listening to my father yelling (叫嚷) about his challenges as an Italian immigrant. Back then, I couldn’t have known his pain as he
struggled to find his footing in this new land.
“We left Italy to give you three girls more opportunities for a better life,” he said. “But
we’d had a shaky start. The apartment your aunt had secured for us fell through at the last minute. It went to someone without children. So the five of us moved into your aunt’s living room.”
Bills mounted up. “And then I saw your mother’s face was as white as a sheet.” He said
bitterly but soon stared down at the table to compose himself. “And the baby was crying. I worried that the houseowner would come knocking on the door.”
Dad jumped to the end of his story, “What more can I say I went looking for a job. I found one.”
Armed with a few English phrases and determination, he’d walked for miles in a city he didn’t know, stopping at every hair salon, asking for a chance to show his skills as a hair stylist, his profession and passion. That’s what he’d been doing all day, supporting for his family.
Forty years later in Toronto, he sat at the table, asking if I thought he’d provided well for his family. I answered. His eyes watered. Mine did, too.

In most cases, people pick the easiest way out: the path of least resistance. Yet, it is the hard choice — the path of most resistance — that is more beneficial and provides most success in the
long run. How do these paths differ What are the dangers of an easy life What are the rewards for a hard life
Taking the path of least resistance means choosing the easiest available option, without
thinking about its long-term consequences. For example, you eat whatever and whenever you like. It may feel nice at first but they have a very high price — guaranteed obesity (肥胖). Most people in modern world follow this path, and this is why so many people struggle without self-control,
good habits, etc.
The path of most resistance is about choosing the option that will lead to more personal
growth, even if it means suffering in the early stage. For example, it may cost you a lot to quit
watching TV for hours. But over the long term, you’ll free up a lot of time that will lead to a more satisfying lite than that of a couch potato. At first sight, this way is unattractive. It requires effort and loss of pleasure, and leads to potential suffering. Yet, on the other side of all that lies a world of more confidence and self-control. In the end, they more than make up for the passing shallow pleasures.
We’re lazy by nature. Some may point out that because of this laziness that we now enjoy
so many wonders of technology that people in the past would kill to have. But ask the same
individuals praising laziness if they would be happy living a life where everything is given to them
试卷第 6 页,共 13 页
the moment they think about it. They would have zero difficulties, no aims in life and no obstacle to get over and no wise human would want such an existence.

A .By asking questions. B .By giving examples.
C .By giving explanations. D .By making a comparison.

A .To tell us humans are lazy by nature.
B .To encourage us to take the hard path of life.
C .To prove that laziness leads to wonders in life.
D .To show the common lifestyles of young people.

As to psychological well-being, the comfort zone is frequently perceived as a haven, a familiar location where individuals feel calm and peaceful. Pushing beyond this psychological state might have benefits.
The comfort zone can be understood as a behavioral metaphor. Within a comfort zone, an individual takes on a state of minimal anxiety without a perception of risk, responding predictably to deliver a consistent level of performance. These include behaviors that people do commonly,
find relaxing, or that take them away from high-stress situations. Engaging in the same manner over time leads to a predictable and familiar zone of comfort. As creatures of habit, we become dependent on these routines that we know we can complete well to feel secure. However, by
stepping outside of our comfort zone, we learn about our ability to handle new situations and control risks, leading to greater self-confidence, and lower levels of anxiety.
One study found that individuals who are more secure in stepping out of their comfort zone
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
are more likely to be excited by and look forward to new experiences, feeling greater confidence in their ability to take them on.
One behavior that demonstrates the benefits of stepping out of a comfort zone is learning to play a musical instrument. When we consider actions outside of our comfort zone, we must assess our desire to engage in that activity. By weighing the pros and cons, we evaluate how
uncomfortable a situation may seem, and whether the danger of entering such an unknown situation will be worth the risk.
Music offers a safe way to step out of your initial comfort zone because you can begin by practicing in an isolated setting, which offers a casual, safe way to build a new skill set. By
picking up and practicing a new instrument, you have proven to yourself that you are capable of meeting an unfamiliar objective, thus decreasing anxiety.
32 .What does the underlined word “haven” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean
A .Habitat. B .Shelter. C .Community. D .Destination.
33 .Which will not be considered when we step out of our comfort zone
A .We recall the old experience.
B .We think whether it is worth the risk.
C .We evaluate our thirsty for the activity.
D .We weigh the strengths and weaknesses.
34 .What will be probably discussed in the following paragraph
A .The definition of the comfort zone.
B .The importance of psychological well-being.
C .The process of learning a new musical instrument.
D .The benefits of stepping out of one’s comfort zone.
35 .Which of the following is the best title for the text
A .How to Identify Comfort Zone
B .Staying Inside Comfort Zone is Important
C .Stepping Outside Comfort Zone Promotes Learning
D .How to Take Yourself Away from High-stress Situations

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Resilience (适应力) is the ability to renew from hardship and possibly also grow stronger in the process. 36 When we face difficulties, instead of giving in to desperation, we can
choose, as hard as it may seem in the moment, to accept resilience. This means recognizing our own inner strength and determination to overcome challenges.
37 Of course it forces us to face our fears and doubts. Each time we tolerate a difficult experience, we build resilience, making us better equipped to handle future challenges.
Turning hardest moments into learning opportunities requires self-reflection. When we
encounter difficulties, it’s essential to take a step back and ask ourselves tough questions.
38 What can we learn from it Reflecting on our experiences allows us to gain valuable insights and wisdom. As long as we obtain learning, understanding, and insight from it, they can become gifts and sources of strength and wisdom over time.
Life’s challenges often bring us into contact with the suffering of others. Experiencing
hardship can promote empathy for those with similar difficulties. This newfound empathy can lead to a desire to help and support others. Turning our pain into an opportunity to connect with others on a deeper level can be incredibly rewarding. 39
As irony as this may sound, life would be incredibly boring and possibly meaningless if we had no problems to solve. Difficult moments often require us to think critically and find solutions to complex problems in ways we wouldn’t otherwise. 40 When we encounter obstacles (障碍)”, we are pushed to explore new views, seek creative solutions. Without obstacles, we
wouldn’t ever discover what we’re truly capable of and a lot of our potential would be wasted.
A .Where was I from
B .What led to this situation
C .Hardship often reveals our true resilience.
D .By dealing with challenges, we learn how to face hardship.
E .It is a quality to turn hardest moments into learning opportunities.
F .By offering support, we not only help others but also create satisfaction.
G .These challenges can be seen as opportunities to develop problem-solving skills.

The road to success isn’t so easy, and success rarely happens overnight.
Actually, a lot of highly successful writers have 56 (previous) faced rejection.
Take J.K. Rowling 57 example. After a total of twelve rejections, Harry Potter became a global success, with over 400 million books 58 (sell) and translated into more than
seventy different languages. Another example J.D. Salinger started writing short stories in high
school. Even when 59 (serve) in the US Army during the Second World War, he carried six chapters of The Catcher in the Rye with him and worked on the novel throughout his war
service. And although it was a time 60 women were not encouraged to become writers, all three Bront sisters became famous writers.
Basketball player Stephen also got some doubts from many people. They thought he was too weak and short 61 (follow) in his father’s footsteps. But he didn’t give up because playing basketball was his dream. His creativity and perseverance made him the Davidson’s star player. He performed beyond everyone’s 62 (expect) with his accurate shooting and
continuous efforts. After receiving the Most Valuable Player award, Stephen 63
(explain) his philosophy: What he wanted to do was just be himself. Inspiring others to believe in 64 (they), he showed that anything is possible.

I could hear one of my classmates expressing her impatience with my slow crawl up the ladder (梯子),“If she’s afraid of heights, why would she sign up for a Bungee Jumping (蹦极) class ” My friend was at the top of the ladder, trying to cheer me up. How did I wind up on a ladder hanging above the Hudson River
It was my friend who invited me to the Bungee Jumping class. At first, I was doubtful, but her enthusiasm and guarantees of strict safety procedures won me over.
I had been fearful of heights since primary school. Avoiding my fear of heights became second nature. I tried not to look down at balconies or staircases. I avoided traveling by plane as

much as possible. I declined invitations from friends to join them on roller coasters (过山车).
But here I was, at age twenty-six, facing my fear of heights in a rather extreme way. I had come around to the idea of trying Bungee Jumping. I figured it wasn’t much different from
swinging on the monkey bars as a kid. The one obstacle I didn’t expect was the ladder. In order to reach the Bungee Jumping, I had to climb up a twenty-two-foot ladder.
My friend’s distraction techniques helped to take my mind off my dangerous task. I found a rhythm and kept going. With a slow and steady (稳定的) pace, I made it to the top.
An instructor tied me to a safety belt and told me to step to the edge of the platform. I held the Bungee Jumping bar with sweaty hands, surprised that it was too thick to fix my hand around. Instead of a firm grasp, my hands were in a weak, bear-claw position.
The cheers from my classmates rang out below. An instructor reminded me of the safety rules, including the net below that would catch me at the bottom. He reminded me to listen to the directions while in the air, so I could perform well.
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I stood face to face with my fear of heights.

67 . I stood face-to-face with my fear of heights. The realization that this was something I would have to do alone not only gave me some discomfort, but also a bit of pride. If I made it through the class, I would finish something in the face of my fear. As the instructor counted down, I took a
deep breath and was pushed off the platform. The air rushed into my lungs. I lost awareness of time and space and let the force of the Bungee Jumping swing me up and down. I dropped onto the net tremblingly and began walking with my shaky legs. Finally, I made it!
My second round of Bungee Jumping went a bit more smoothly. My hands and legs didn’t shake anymore. Even at the moment of jumping off the platform, my eyes were open and I saw the water coming towards me directly. An inexperienced thrill filled my whole body immediately.
While my fear of heights was still with me, this experience opened up a new way of seeing myself and approaching challenges. I became more open to trying new things. I’m more capable than my fears let me believe I am.
