Giving Clear Directions: A Helpful Skill
Knowing how to give good directions is useful in everyday life. You may need to tell a friend how to come to your home, or help someone find a library or a park. But just knowing the way is not enough—you must explain it clearly. (1)
Use Landmarks (地标) to Guide People
(2) Instead, tell them to go from one easy-to-see place to another, like from a bank to a post office. This helps people follow the way and know they are still correct.
Draw a Map If Needed
Sometimes words are not enough. If it is hard to explain, try drawing a map. (3) You can add important places like a supermarket, a school, or a traffic light. A map is also easy to keep and remember.
(4)
You might know a very short way, but it could be hard for others. It is often better to give the easiest way, not the shortest. Even if it is a little longer, it is easier to follow clear landmarks. Usually, the easiest way has fewer turns and more straight roads.
Giving clear directions is an important skill. You need to know the place well. (5)
A.Check the map on your phone.
B.Keep it simple, not short.
C.Here are some ways to help you.
D.How clearly you explain also makes a big difference.

Do you know that plants can “talk” to each other Scientists have found that plants have their own ways of communicating, especially when they are in danger.
For example, when insects start eating a plant’s leaves, the plant can send out special chemicals (化学物质) into the air. These chemicals act like a warning signal (信号). Other plants nearby can “smell” this signal. Once they get the message, they begin to produce chemicals that make their leaves taste bad or are even harmful to insects. This helps them prepare for the coming danger before it arrives.
Besides sending warnings, plants can also communicate through their roots (根). They use an underground network of fungi (真菌). This network connects the roots of different plants. Scientists call this “wood wide web.” Through it, plants can share water, food, and information. For example, a big tree might send food through the network to a small baby plant that doesn’t get enough sunlight.
These discoveries change the way we think about plants. They are not as quiet as we once believed. They are active, social, and always ready to help each other out.
