The Northern Lights, also called Aurora Borealis, are one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the world. They usually appear in the night sky near the North Pole. The lights look like colorful dancing curtains—green, pink, blue and purple are the most common colors.
Auroras are caused by solar winds. When the sun sends out charged particles (带电粒子), they hit the Earth’s magnetic field (磁场). This makes the air glow, creating the amazing lights. The best time to see the Northern Lights is in winter, when the nights are long and dark. Places like Norway, Iceland and Canada are great spots to watch them.
Now, light pollution is a problem for people who want to see the auroras. Bright city lights make it hard to see the faint (微弱的) natural lights. Scientists also say that climate change might affect the auroras, but more research is needed to know for sure.
