All my life I’ve been bad at sports. At school, I always avoided sports day by pretending to be sick. “Hating sports” was core to my identity.
Then, last year, a friend invited me to her birthday “kickabout” — a casual game of
football. Had we been less close, I might have made my excuses. Instead, I turned up to the park, determined to keep as far away from the ball as possible.
To my great surprise, I enjoyed myself. Instead of running down the clock on the sidelines, I got swept up in the game, rooting for my team to score. None of the other players were sporty or experienced either. Yet, at the pub afterwards, we agreed we’d had fun and wanted to do it again.
A year later, the kickabout is not only still going, it’s grown from five or six friends to a lineup of about 40. Every other Sunday, we play at a proper field. I’m still the worst player, but I’m also slightly better than I was a year ago — and I would no longer say I hate playing sports. What keeps me turning up every time Unexpectedly, it is not the socialising or the exercise. I love the sense of challenging myself, with zero expectation — or even hope — of ever being
actually skillful.
Why does it feel so good to be bad at something
“Amateurish” hasn’t always been a negative word, explains author and activist Karen
Walrond. “It comes from the Latin, meaning ‘one who loves’.” Her book In Defense of Dabbling makes the case for “intentional amateurism”: finding an activity we’re drawn to but not
necessarily naturally good at, and sticking with it just for the love of it.
Taking my football commitment seriously, but not putting pressure on myself to perform
has helped me to accept myself as I am (not very good at sports), while demonstrating that I can
grow and try new things. “A lot of perfectionism is really related to how you’re perceived by other people,” Walrond says. “Welcoming amateurism helps you focus inward.”
1 .Why did the author decide to join the birthday “kickabout”
A .To explore a new sport.
B .To overcome her fear of sports.
C .To socialize with a larger group.
D .To avoid letting her friend down.
2 .According to Walrond, why might people do things they’re not good at
A .To satisfy one’s curiosity.
B .To discover hidden talents.
C .To enjoy the activity itself.
D .To seek external recognition.
3 .What is the author’s attitude towards amateurism
A .Supportive. B .Neutral.
C .Doubtful. D .Cautious.

As a librarian, I am often asked: Does listening to audiobooks qualify as reading Many people don’t think so. There is a snobbishness to reading a physical book. Telling someone that you have only listened to a certain book usually comes out sounding like an apology.
Sure, audiobooks don’t count as reading in an extremely literal linguistic sense. You, the listener, are hearing someone else read a book, instead of looking at the words. But when we talk about “reading a book”, I don’t think anyone cares about how you’re taking it in.
Audiobooks can offer a vastly different experience from reading yourself, and that’s
because narrators (主播) can add so much to a story. I recently listened to Woodworking, which had three narrators at three extremely different points in their lives. The three audiobook
performers brought extra depth and humor to the reading that I couldn’t have gotten just reading alone.
There’s also something extra convenient about audiobooks. When I travel on public
transport and can’t get a seat, holding a physical book in my hands is hard; but I can listen to an audiobook anywhere. They’re always wonderful for multitasking, whether that’s listening while doing the dishes, cleaning the bathroom or, my personal favorite, doing a craft.
In 2022, the National Endowment for the Arts reported that 48.5 percent of adults said they had read at least one book in the past year, down from 52.7 percent five years earlier. At a time
when fewer people are reading books, this audiobook debate can feel like a silly distraction from what really matters: Keeping books in the hands that need them, in any format at all.
I read because I love stories. And, yes, that connection to the story, or essay or memoir
might feel a little different depending on whether I read the words on the page or hear them
performed by an audiobook narrator. But both are worth celebrating — and neither is better than the other.
4 .What does the underlined word “snobbishness” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A .A lack of interest.
B .A habit of apologizing.
C .A feeling of superiority.
D .A desire to read more books.
5 .What benefit of audiobooks is stressed in paragraph 3
A .They simplify complicated plots.
B .They make listeners more focused.
C .They allow access to more authors.
D .They bring greater richness to stories.
6 .According to the author, what matters more
A .Improving the quality of books,
B .Encouraging more people to read.
C .Exploring more formats of reading.
D .Keeping books accessible to readers.
7 .What is the best title for the text
A .Audiobooks: A New Reading Trend
B .Audiobooks: A Bridge Connecting Readers
C .Audiobooks: Narrators Bring Stories to Life
D .Audiobooks: Every Form of Reading Counts

“Starve your distractions, feed your focus,” says psychologist and author, Daniel Goleman. Nice idea, right But it turns out that the ability to stay focused is something that many of us are
finding increasingly difficult. Just yesterday, I started tidying the living room, only to get
sidetracked when I noticed my shiny new exercise bike. Inspired to workout, I switched to hunting for clean gym wear then to putting dirty clothes in the washing machine, then to scrolling online
for new leggings.
If my tidying struggle rings true for you, it may be that you too are experiencing a state of mind which is referred to as “popcorn (爆米花) brain” — characterised by messy thoughts,
distracted attention, and an urge to switch between tasks, similar to the random popping of corn grains in a pot. It’s also accompanied by mental overload, more stress, tiredness, and anxiety.
So, what’s causing all this pressure, and making our brains metaphorically pop David
Levy, a computer scientist at the University of Washington who coined the term popcorn brain, said that it was a result of“being so obsessed with electronic multi-tasking that the slower paced life offline holds no interest”.
However, it is just one piece of the puzzle. Financial pressure, burnout, and emotional
dysregulation can create the conditions for popcorn brain. There’re also lifestyle factors to
consider. Without sufficient rest, your brain is unlikely to function at its best. Not just poor sleep, but a lack of mental downtime can affect the brain. Even moments we think are restful — like
scrolling, marathon TV watching, or multi-tasking — often keep our brain in a state of low-grade stimulation that prevents real mental reset.
To counter this “popcorn brain” state, allow space in your day for doing nothing. This may feel extremely boring at first, because popcorn brain likes to be “go go go” in an attempt to feel

safe. “Go for a walk without music. Cook without a podcast (播客). Stare out of your window and notice what you can see,” suggests Goleman. “Sit in silence and observe your thoughts. Let your brain breathe. Doing nothing is sometimes doing exactly what your nervous system and body
needs.”
8 .What does the author want to show by talking about tidying the living room
A .People get distracted easily.
B .People are unwilling to do chores.
C .People find workout more engaging.
D .People easily get lost in the digital world.
9 .What may be a cause of popcorn brain
A .Limited screen time.
B .Sufficient mental relaxation.
C .Too much slow-paced offline life.
D .Frequent engagement in multiple tasks.
10 .According to Daniel Goleman, what is a way to deal with popcorn brain
A .Fill your free time with hobbies.
B .Create quiet unoccupied moments.
C .Replace digital distractions with sports.
D .Practice switching between tasks quickly.
11 .What is the main purpose of the text
A .To advocate a digital-free life.
B .To blame electronics for mental tiredness.
C .To analyze a mental state and offer advice.
D .To introduce focus skills and compare solutions.

Can we finally retire the myth that goldfish have three-second memories Scientists have shown that fish can actually distinguish and remember individuals, find their way with mental maps, and keep track of quantities. But a recent paper in Methods in Ecology and Evolution
suggests we may still be underestimating fish cognition (认知).
“Most of the research has focused on a handful of species that are very well-studied,” says study author Catarina Vila-Pouca. In addition, most studies on fish cognition have been conducted in laboratory environments, often with lab-raised fish. In a lab tank, fish may experience more
stress and less motivation to exhibit complex behaviors, meaning findings may not reflect the full complexity of how fish learn and behave in the wild.
To address this gap, Vila-Pouca and her team designed a new device — a feeding board consisting of a 30 by 30 centimeter plate with 24 small holes, each with a movable cover that a fish can push aside to access a food reward hidden below. This setup can be adapted to test
different abilities; for instance, by marking the rewarded plate with different colors, shapes, or dots of varying number, they can examine a fish’s discrimination learning, memory, and
numerical abilities.
In initial field tests with wild guppies in Trinidad, fish quickly learned to use the board, showing learning rates comparable to those observed in lab studies. These field test device also revealed interesting species differences: some guppies (“producers”) solved the task more
frequently and adapted their approach based on previous successes, while others (“scroungers”) rarely tried themselves. Rather, they waited for a producer to uncover a reward and then stole it.
Vila-Pouca emphasizes that fish are a good group in which scientists can study big
questions in ecology and evolution; there are so many species living in different types of
environments and with different life histories. This diversity allows scientists to go beyond asking, “Can fish learn this ” They can instead investigate what social or physical environments drive
certain types of learning.
12 .What is a limitation of earlier studies on fish cognition
A .They studied too many species.
B .They used artificial environments.
C .They observed complex behaviors.
D .They employed conflicting methods.
13 .What is the new device used for
A .Counting wild fish populations.
B .Testing fish intelligence in the wild.
C .Making fish in lab tanks less stressed.
D .Training fish to perform complex tasks.
14 .What can be learned about guppies
A .They learned faster than lab fish.
B .They stole food from other species.
C .Their problem-solving methods varied.
D .Their performance improved over time.
15 .Why are fish valuable for cognitive research according to Vila-Pouca
A .Their variety aids learning studies.
B .Their memory is similar to humans’.
C .They are highly adapted to the wild.
D .They exhibit clearly different social roles.

For most of my life, I treated taste as fixed. Hobbies, foods and even social situations were quietly written off with the certainty of personal preference. Salsa lessons No thanks. Interactive theatre Not for me. 16 That left me feeling flat and a little empty.
In an effort to break the boredom, I began to question whether my taste could be trained. I started small. When invited to a book club, I resisted the thought to dismiss it despite my
longstanding dislike of reading. ____17____ I even challenged myself to read the physical books on my commute (通勤) instead of scrolling aimlessly on my phone. This small success
encouraged me to explore further.
18 I tried jazz clubs, spoken word nights, line dancing and contemporary drama. Initially, it was awkward, and sometimes confusing. By the end, though, trying things I thought I wouldn’t enjoy became oddly addictive. I came to realize that stepping into unfamiliar territory
was beneficial not just cognitively but socially.
Most recently, I tried out my local library’s chess club. I was easily 30 years younger than
everyone else, but that didn’t matter. Sitting opposite people with wildly different life stories made me realise how rarely I speak with people from other generations outside work or family. We

talked about their past careers, local news, and I learned new chess moves. 19
What surprised me most was how these new activities carried over into one another, leading to more recommendations and conversations. 20 Without judgment, they helped me find value in experiences I had long dismissed. Putting “try something new” in my weekly schedule
broke up the work-commute-sleep cycle I had built. Next week Who knows. Maybe magic lessons. Maybe life drawing.
A .There were things I liked and things I didn’t.
B .Then came music and performance activities.
C .To my surprise, the first audio book opened up a new world.
D .I felt more connected there than at any organized social event.
E .Reading felt like a mental workout that left my brain exhausted.
F .That, in itself, became the reward — not just the hobbies, but the people.
G .My automatic dismissal trapped me in the routine of work, commute, and sleep.

As China becomes more 44 (center) to global cultural conversations, its tea

The final bell of the school year rang, and the classroom erupted in cheers. Everyone was excited about the upcoming summer vacation, but not Tommy. He sat quietly at his desk, staring at the empty chair in the front row— the one where Mrs. Lee used to sit.
Mrs. Lee had been their English teacher for three years. She was kind, patient, and always
had a way of making even the most difficult grammar rules seem fun. Beyond the classroom, she had poured her heart into restoring the school’s neglected garden, transforming it into a living
learning space called “The Sunflower Corner”. She had encouraged students to plant seeds, tend to the flowers, and find joy in watching life grow. It was Mrs. Lee who had guided Tommy’s hesitant hands to plant his first sunflower, helping him overcome his shyness through the quiet language of gardening. The garden had become her lively lesson in patience and care, touching every student
who worked in it.
But a week before, Mrs. Lee had announced she was retiring due to a sudden illness.
Tommy was heartbroken. He wanted to give her a special gift to show his gratitude, something that would remind her of the living legacy (遗产) she had planted at school.
He had an idea. Mrs. Lee loved sunflowers, which she often said symbolized hope and
growth. Tommy decided to bring her a potted sunflower from the very garden they had tended
together. After school, he carefully selected one from “The Sunflower Corner”, its young face
following the afternoon light. He then made his way to Mrs. Lee’s home, carrying the plant with gentle determination.
When he arrived, he knocked on the door. A woman who looked like Mrs. Lee answered. “Can I help you ” she asked. Tommy explained that he was a student of Mrs. Lee’s and had a gift for her. “I’m her sister,” the woman said. “She’s resting right now. She’s been very tired lately.
But she would be so happy to see e in.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右;

根据第二段中“Had we been less close, I might have made my excuses. Instead, I turned up to the park, determined to keep as far away from the ball as possible. (如果我们关系没那么亲近,我可能会找借口不去。相反,我去了公园,决心尽可能远离足球。)”可知,如果作者和朋友关系没那么亲近,她可能会找借口不去,但她还是去了公园,由此可推断作者是为了不让朋友失望才决定参加生日“足球游戏” 的。故选 D。
2 .细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Her book In Defense of Dabbling makes the case for
‘intentional amateurism’: finding an activity we’re drawn to but not necessarily naturally good at, and sticking with it just for the love of it.
Taking my football commitment seriously, but not putting
pressure on myself to perform has helped me to accept myself as I am (not very good at sports),
while demonstrating that I can grow and try new things. ‘A lot of perfectionism is really related to how you’re perceived by other people, ’ Walrond says. ‘Welcoming amateurism helps you focus
inward. 故选 A。

依据第三段“Audiobooks can offer a vastly different experience from reading yourself, and that’s because narrators (主播) can add so much to a story. I recently listened to
Woodworking, which had three narrators at three extremely different points in their lives. The
three audiobook performers brought extra depth and humor to the reading that I couldn’t have
At a time when fewer people are reading books, this audiobook
debate can feel like a silly distraction from what really matters: Keeping books in the hands that
need them, in any format at all.(在读书的人越来越少的时候,这场关于有声书的争论似乎是一种愚蠢的干扰,而真正重要的是:让需要书的人能够接触到书,无论以何种形式)”可知,作者认为有声书的争论似乎是一种愚蠢的干扰,让人们忽略了读书的人越来越少的事实,由此可知,作者认为更重要的是鼓励更多人阅读。故选 B 项。

根据第一段中的“But it turns out that the ability to stay focused is something that many of us are finding increasingly difficult. Just yesterday, I started tidying the living room, only to get sidetracked when I noticed my shiny new exercise bike.(但事实证明,我们很多人都发现保持专注的能力变得越来越难。就在昨天,我开始整理客厅,却在看到崭新的健身自行车时分心了)”可推知,作者通过整理客厅的例子,说明人们很容易分心。故选 A 项。
David Levy, a computer scientist at the University of
Washington who coined the term popcorn brain, said that it was a result of “being so obsessed
with electronic multi-tasking that the slower paced life offline holds no interest”.(华盛顿大学的 计算机科学家大卫·利维创造了“爆米花大脑”这个词,他说这是“沉迷于电子设备多任务处理,以至于对节奏较慢的线下生活毫无兴趣” 的结果)”可知,频繁进行多项任务可能是爆米花大脑的成因。故选 D 项。
To counter this “popcorn brain” state, allow space in your day for doing nothing. This may feel extremely boring at first, because popcorn brain likes to be
“go go go” in an attempt to feel safe. “Go for a walk without music. Cook without a podcast (播
客). Stare out of your window and notice what you can see,” suggests Goleman.
通读全文,根据第二段中的“If my tidying struggle rings true for you, it may be that you too are experiencing a state of mind which is referred to as “popcorn (爆米花) brain” —
