We interviewed June Galloway about her new book Get off on the Right Foot: Don’t Let the Wrong Gesture Ruin (破坏) Your Day.
Host: English is an international language. But in your book, communication with gestures (手势) is paid more attention to. Why is that so important
June: Well, gestures and other body language have different meanings in different places. What you consider friendly or polite could be thought to be impolite in another culture.
Host: Can greeting someone in the wrong way really lead to misunderstanding
June: In some places, yes. The heavy handshake that a North American expects may seem quite impolite in other places. And a light handshake—which is usual in some countries—seems unfriendly to a North American.
Host: What other gestures can cause misunderstanding
June: Take the gesture “Come here” for example. In North America, people gesture with the palm up. But in southern Europe, that gesture means “goodbye”. And in many Asian countries, the palm-up gesture is thought to be rude (粗鲁的). Instead, people there gesture with the palm down.
Host: There must be some gestures used everywhere, right Like the thumb-up gesture for “great”
June: Sorry. That’s very rude in Australia and the Middle East. That is why it’s important to know about body language and cultural differences. I’ve described many of such cultural differences in my book, so my readers won’t get off on the wrong foot.
( ) 1. Which gesture means “goodbye” in southern Europe
( ) 2. What is mentioned (提及) in June’s book
① Some common gestures.
② The importance of body language.
③ Different meanings of a gesture.
④ The history of English language.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④
C. ②③④ D. ①③④
( ) 3. What does the underlined sentence “my readers won’t get off on the wrong foot” mean
A. Her readers won’t get polite gestures.
B. Her readers won’t know how to walk.
C. Her readers won’t understand others.
D. Her readers won’t make mistakes in communication.
( ) 4. What’s the interview mainly about
A. A popular gesture in the world.
B. A new writer in the US.
C. Body language in different places.
D. Good ways to learn English.

5.has cooled off 6.owner
二、1.A 2.A 3.C 4.A 5.D
三、1.too difficult; to
2.The girl is not brave enough to go near the dog.
3.in case
4.ran into a tree
5.all at once
6.to cheat;keep his word
根据“In North America, people gesture with the palm up. But in southern Europe, that gesture means ‘goodbye’.”
根据“I’ve described many of such cultural differences in my book, so my readers won’t get off on the wrong foot.”
