Regular physical activity had nearly doubled cardiovascular (心血管的) benefits in individuals with depression or anxiety, compared with individuals without these diagnoses, according to a study presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 71st Annual Scientific Session.
The research findings add to mounting evidence that exercise improves cardiovascular health by helping to activate parts of the brain that counteract stress. Overall, the study found that people who achieved the recommended amount of physical activity per week were 17% less likely to suffer a major harmful cardiovascular event than those who exercised less. These benefits were significantly greater in those with anxiety or depression, who had a 22% risk reduction compared with a 10% risk reduction in those without either condition.
“The effect of physical activity on the brain’s stress response may be particularly relevant to those with stress-related mental conditions,” said Hadil Zureigat, MD, a postdoctoral clinical research fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital and the study’s lead author. “This is not to suggest that exercise is only effective in those with depression or anxiety, but we found that these patients seem to get a greater cardiovascular benefit from physical activity.”
Rates of both depression and anxiety have risen during the outbreak of flu, and heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the US. The study findings underline the important role of exercise in maintaining heart health and reducing stress, according to the researchers.
“Any amount of exercise is helpful, particularly for those with depression or anxiety,” Zureigat said. “Not only will physical activity help them feel better, but they will also significantly reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease. It can be hard to make the transition, but once achieved, physical activity allows those with these common chronic (慢性的) stress-related mental conditions to hit two birds with one stone.”

Both low-fat and low-carbon diets work equally well to help people lose weight over two years, a new research has shown. In addition, the low-carbon diets may also improve levels of HDL cholesterol (胆固醇), although it’s not clear how much difference this would make to your overall health.
The search for a diet that helps people lose weight goes back decades. In recent years, there’s been much discussion about the strong points of low-fat diets, compared with low-carbon diets. And some claim that the low-carbon diets work well for short-term weight loss, but there isn’t enough evidence to show how well the two types of diets work and what the effects are on people’s health in the long term.
In addition, it’s been recognised that weight-loss programmes are better if they include some support to help people make changes to their eating and exercise habits. This is often called “behavioural therapy”, because it works through changing people’s behaviour.
The new study has researched people who followed a weight-loss programme over two years, all of whom had behavioural therapy. According to the actual situation of different people, half the people followed a low-carbon diet, and half followed a low-fat diet. And the result shows: People on both diets did equally well in losing weight. After two years, they had lost on average 7 kilogrammes. This amount of weight loss is enough to have positive effects on the health of fat people. What’s more, the group who had the low-carbon diets had much better levels of HDL cholesterol than people on the low-fat diets.
If you need to lose weight, this study shows that behavioural therapy is able to work effectively. You may find it easier to lose weight as part of a supervised weight-loss programme that can help you break bad habits and make healthy changes to your diets and lifestyle.

A. Participants on both diets didn’t lose the same weight in the new study.
B. The low-fat and low-carbon diets make much difference to your overall health.
C. People who want to lose weight should change their eating and exercise behaviour.
D. The behavioural therapy is beneficial to your health in the long term.

We all know that regular exercise is good for us. In recent years we’ve been told to aim to walk 10,000 steps a day to remain healthy, although other advice to do three 10-minute walks a day is thought to be even more effective. But the latest piece of research might put a spring in your step if you’re someone who walks at a fast pace. That’s because, according to scientists, the speed at which people walk in their 40s is a sign of how much their brains, as well as their bodies, are ageing.
The BBC’s Philippa Roxby writes that tests on 1,000 people from New Zealand born in the 1970s found that slower walkers tended to show signs of “accelerated ageing”. Their lungs, teeth and immune systems were in worse shape than those who walked faster. And to add insult to injury, the study found not only did slower walkers’ bodies age more quickly, but their faces looked older and they had smaller brains. Professor Terrie, lead author of the study, told the BBC: “It found that a slow walk is a problem sign decades before old age.”
This might be seen as a wake-up call for people with a slower pace who might feel it’s time to work out and get fitter. But it might be too late; researchers say they were able to predict the walking speed of 45-year-olds using the results of intelligence, language and motor skills tests from when they were aged three. They also suggest that even in early life, there are signs showing that people will go on to have a healthier life.
So, what’s the point of knowing that a slower walking pace might mean a smaller brain Well, researchers say measuring walking speed at a younger age, and understanding what this might mean, could be a way of testing treatments to slow human ageing. This might help us make lifestyle changes while we’re still young and healthy. Any steps we can take to prolong a good mental and physical state is a no-brainer!

A. Walking and health.

A. Walking 10,000 steps a day helps keep you fit.

Many people believe that heart disease only affects older men. 1 . The reality is that people of all ages die of heart attacks each year. And while death rates have declined in the US and many western European countries, they are on the rise in the developing world. Yet most heart disease is preventable.
The challenge of heart disease is that it may be silent for years before causing any noticeable problems. No one would have guessed that Barbara Teng would have a heart attack. She was not overweight. “The week after I turned 49 when I was on a business trip in Chicago, I had a major heart attack,” she said. 2 . She now exercises daily and monitors her heart health.
Dr Patrice Nickens who is with the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute thinks that heart disease is 82 percent preventable. “ 3 ,” she said. “Men are also facing the same problem and the key to staying healthy is knowing your numbers. Your weight, your blood cholesterol, blood sugar and your blood pressure are important numbers that can help you take action and reduce your risk,” she added. 4 . “And the steps to take are simple: don’t smoke, maintain a healthy weight, exercise, know your numbers and talk to your physician and control these risks,” she said.
African-Americans are at higher-than-average risk for heart disease and stroke; people don’t even know they have it, which increases the risk. MedStar Washington Hospital Center is trying to reach this population. 5 . For example, they help the people monitor their blood pressure. If people realise they are at risk for heart disease, they’ll make lifestyle changes: lose weight, exercise, eat the right foods and keep in touch with a doctor.
A. With the right training, they can play an important role in community health
B. A healthy lifestyle can prevent heart disease
C. Lack of exercise causes heart attacks
D. It is the leading cause of death for women
E. This is a set idea that is not true

Experts note that an unhealthy lifestyle can put you at great risk of heart disease and stroke. So doctors urge us to eat healthy foods, get exercise, stop smoking and limit our alcohol intake. But there is something else you can do. And it is free and easy. Smile!
Dr Chockalingam, a heart disease specialist in Columbia, advises his patients to smile. He says a smile may be one way to help your heart. “When we smile, the brain wiring changes. The chemicals that are released are more positive.” He says smiling is the first step in fighting physical and emotional stress and its sometimes harmful effects on human health. This is not just New Age advice. Several studies support his opinion.
When you feel stressed or under pressure, your body releases many natural hormones including adrenaline (肾上腺素) and cortisol (皮质醇). Adrenaline increases your heart rate and blood pressure. Cortisol is the body’s main stress hormone. It increases sugar in the bloodstream. If you are truly in danger, these hormones can help you. They are part of what we call our fight-or-flight response.
However, when we are stressed for a long period, these stress hormones are ever-present in our bodies. And that, medical researchers warn, may lead to health problems.
Researchers say the connection between stress and heart disease is still unclear. However, they claim that when people are stressed for long periods of time, they may have an unhealthy lifestyle, which can lead to health problems.
Dr Chockalingam says a smile may be one way to help. He tells his patients to smile 20 times an hour. To some, that might seem like a lot of smiling. Or some might even feel foolish…smiling for seemingly no reason. But a smile does not involve drugs. It is not invasive like a surgical operation. It is free and it has no bad side effects.
“Once people smile, they are relaxing. This relaxation directly lowers blood pressure, and improves sugar levels in the blood. If we are smiling, we are breaking that link between stress and health.” And it just may provide a little extra protection to everyone’s heart health.
( )1. Which of the following agrees with Dr Chockalingam’s opinion

( B )1. What advantage do low-carbon diets have
A. They can help people remember better.
B. They can improve levels of HDL cholesterol.
C. They can improve people’s overall health greatly.
D. They can help people take exercise better.

C. People who want to lose weight should change their eating and exercise behaviour.
D. The behavioural therapy is beneficial to your health in the long term.
( B )3. What is the author’s attitude towards behavioural therapy

( B )1. What is the text mainly about
A. Walking and health.
B. Slow walking and ageing.
C. The way of slowing ageing.
D. The standard walking pace.
( D )2. What does the latest research show
A. Walking 10,000 steps a day helps keep you fit.
B. A slower walker is healthier than a faster walker.
C. Slower walkers are easy to have slower brains.
D. Ageing signs of slow walkers arise earlier than fast walkers.
( C )3. What do the underlined words “wake-up call” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Challenge. B. Potential.
C. Reminder. D. Solution.
( A )4. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Testing walking speed before old age makes sense.
B. It’s important to keep fit both physically and mentally.
C. Walking pace is connected with health and ageing.
D. Walking speed at a young age determines one’s longevity.

Ⅰ. 阅读理解
( D )1. Which of the following agrees with Dr Chockalingam’s opinion
A. Smile has the same effects as laughter.
B. Smile can be used to take the place of medicine.
C. Smile is better than any healthy lifestyle to health.
D. Smile can make our body produce beneficial chemicals.
( C )2. What can we know about the mentioned stress hormones
A. They can lower our blood pressure.
B. They will surely lead to heart disease.
C. They can benefit us when we are in danger.
D. They will make us live an unhealthy lifestyle.
( A )3. Why does Dr Chockalingam think smiling is helpful to our health
A. It can make us relax.
B. It increases sugar levels.
C. It has little bad side effects.
D. It can happen for no reason.
( B )4. What can be the best title for the text
A. A Thorough Analysis of the Causes of Heart Diseases
B. One Thing You Can Do Right Now to Help Your Heart
C. One Thing That Is Closely Connected with Stress Hormones
D. The Clear Connection Between Unhealthy Lifestyles and Heart Diseases
