My classmate Ethan loved TV very much. He knew everything about shows like Who’s the Boss and often forgot to do his homework. His mother wanted him to study more, so she made a deal with him. She said, “If you don’t watch TV for one month, I will give you $200.” None of us thought he could do it, but Ethan tried hard and succeeded. He got the money and went to buy the biggest TV he could find.
Now, many schools do something similar. They give money to students for coming to
school every day or getting good test scores. Students love it. They use the money to buy things they like. However, many parents are concerned. Some teachers argue, “We shouldn’t pay
students to do what they should do anyway.” Psychologists also say that when you pay someone to learn, they might stop learning when the money stops.
This problem shows something bigger. Even though schools have more money and new
plans now, many students still don’t learn as well as we hope. Ethan bought a TV with his reward money, and schools pay students for learning. Both make us ask: how can we help students want to learn for themselves, not just for money
1 .Why did Ethan’s mother make a deal with him
2 .What concern do psychologists raise about paying students to learn

It’s good to share, right Growing up as kids, we are told to share our toys and not be
selfish. We also live in an age where discussing our feelings is encouraged. But when does it all become too much With new crazes trending all the time, such as dance challenges and wearing a pillow as a dress, the question is: when can sharing become oversharing on social media
What is oversharing The term has become associated with social media, but it isn’t
exclusive to this platform. Imagine you head to a party and you meet someone. Within five
minutes they have disclosed intimate details about their life. Oversharing happens when people
reveal too many personal or private details, especially in situations where others might feel
uncomfortable. While some of us may try to escape these people, according to marriage therapist Carolyn Cole, this form of oversharing could come from a strong desire to connect with someone. But how does this translate to social media
Dr Christopher Hand, a lecturer in cyberpsychology, says the more details people disclose, the less sympathy they receive when things go wrong. This could be due to a belief that we attract our own negative experiences the more we share them. It seems that sadfishing, the idea of
searching for sympathy by oversharing, is generally perceived as negative rather than the cry for help it could actually be.
However, Dr Hand’s research also seems to suggest that the more we post on a platform,
the more socially attractive we become — provided that the posts that we sent are positive. Even back in 2015, Gwendolyn Seidman PhD, said that we should steer clear of complaining and being negative online. We should also avoid showing off, or bragging, as it’s now known — especially about our love lives. It makes sense — if your date is going ‘that well’, would you really have
time to share a photo with text
试卷第 2 页,共 12 页
So, how can you know if you are oversharing Well, why not ask your friends in real life They would probably be more than happy to tell you if your posts about your breakfast or your complaints about your lack of money really are too much.
5 .What is oversharing
6 .According to Dr Christopher Hand, what influences does oversharing in social media have
7 .Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
According to Gwendolyn Seidman PhD, we should avoid being negative online, so showing off our love lives makes
sense.
8 .How would you deal with your friend’s oversharing on social media (In about 40 words)

Be a good tourist
Tourism can be both good and bad. Yes, it brings in money for the local economy and creates lots of jobs for locals, but it may also bring some problems.
One growing problem is tourists who want to prove that they have visited a destination.
Tourists have used paint, rocks, or even keys to write on the Luxor Temple in Egypt, the
Colosseum in Rome, Stonehenge in the UK, memorial stones at the bottom of Qomolangma, and many, many other places. Thousands of tourist sites are being destroyed by tourists who “love
them to death”. I have three words for people like this: please stop it. If you want to leave a mark on the world, do it by changing someone’s life with kindness and love. Pass kindness along to
future generations, not destruction (破坏).
Another big problem in some places has been tourists disturbing (打扰) the local people
and life. Some tourists wander around and take pictures of local people without asking for their
permission. For example, Chiang Mai University in Thailand and Yonsei University in South
Korea have great numbers of tourists visiting their campuses and walking through their libraries
and other public areas, taking pictures of students, and disturbing their studies. Another example is

Sanlitun, a neighbourhood in Beijing, China. Some tourists love to party there late into the night, making it difficult for locals to sleep. I have three words for tourists like this: please be
considerate. Have fun in a way that does not disturb others.
The number of problems from tourists is endless: walking in large groups without
considering others who need to walk by, crossing roads without thinking of local traffic laws, and many more. The only way to solve the problem of the terrible tourist is to make sure that you are not one. Be the best, kindest, most polite tourist possible. Remember, whenever you step outside your country’s borders, you are representing (代表) your country to the rest ofthe world.
9 .In what ways does tourism benefit local areas
__ 10 .What kind of mark does the writer suggest that tourists should make
__ 11.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. Tourists taking pictures of students at Chiang Mai University is mentioned by the author as a positive example of cultural exchange __________ 12 .Please use specific example(s) to show how you act as a good tourist. I used to put myself in a different category from my classmates. The class was full of brains programmed to think perfectly while my brain panicked at conflict. The first time I cried in front of my classmates, I was done for. Tears betrayed (出卖) my emotions on my first chemistry test. I took the “walk of shame” towards my teacher’s desk, making sure to cover my eyes with my hair
试卷第 4 页,共 12 页
and did the seemingly impossible. I expressed my need for a break to my teacher.
Admitting that I needed help seemed like the downfall of my second year of high school
where I was supposed to be the optimistic girl who smiled until her cheeks hurt. As I look back at my painful experience with a clearer view and with kindness for myself, I realize that asking for a break isn’t shameful.
As a general rule, it seems that it is only acceptable to acknowledge that you’re mentally
unwell when your pain takes on a physical form. Just because sadness is invisible does not mean it is made-up. So many thoughts rushed through my head during my chemistry test and one stuck
out to me: “What if I am pretending how I feel What if I don’t deserve to ask for help because this anxiety is fake ”
Unfortunately, so many others have these dangerous thoughts flashing in their brain. They disregard how they feel, thinking that bottling up feelings solves their problems. Sadly, this is not surprising because the shame surrounding mental disorders frightens people into not speaking up and advocating for their feelings.
I truly understand how scary it is. Take it step-by-step and just focus on admitting to
yourself that you need help before your feelings become buried from staying hidden for so long.
13 .What made the author feel different from her classmates
14 .How does the author view asking for a break now
15.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Many people acknowledge their true feelings, believing that bottling up feelings solves their problems.

luckily for me, Via Rail Canada offered youths between the ages of 18 and 25 the chance to ride the train across Canada for the month of July. The ticket was a bargain $150. My best friends
Trevor, Joel and Jeremy and I immediately jumped at the opportunity and secured four tickets on the great Canadian railroad.
For a group of 20-year-olds, this was like the first flight of young birds from the nest. When we approached the train station in the morning, our 22-day adventure from Sudbury to Vancouver was to begin. Eyes baggy from lack of sleep, we jumped on board as ifit was the train to
Hogwarts in Harry Potter. Although the thought of three full days on those tracks covering close to 3,000 kilometres crushed our spirits a little, what happened next caught us by surprise.
The three days on board turned into a summer camp on rails. At night, we would climb up the glass-domed train car, which gave us a scenic view of the starry night sky, untouched by the harmful light pollution. Before we knew it, the warm sun rays beating down on our faces woke us up for another day on the rails. To my surprise, a sea of golden grain fields dominated the
landscape we were in the Canadian Prairies.
Another day slipped away and we set up for another night in the dome. And this time we were greeted by night sky painted by a fantastic thunderstorm. Lightning was striking at an
incredible rate. The spectacular and memorable light show left everyone in the glass bubble in complete disbelief.
Arriving in the Rocky Mountains was one of the most surrealistic (超现实的) experiences of my life. Before the train adventure, if I could have skipped the travel and arrived at the
destination, I would have. That is no longer true. I’ve learned that the journey can be more enjoyable than the destination.
17 .What has made the author’s train adventure across Canada a reality
18 .According to Paragraph 2, what do the young people feel about the coming train journey

As a freshman, I had no idea how to become a scientist. The process felt cloudy and
overwhelming. But things began to change after my first meeting with the professor who became my lab supervisor. Throughout college, she provided support professionally and personally. I
became empowered and my confidence grew.
Being an advisor at my Ph.D. university seemed a great opportunity to do the same for
others. I enthusiastically applied and was excited to be matched with a student. But as our first
meeting drew close, uncertainty set in. What if she asks a question that I have no idea about How could I be ready for this leadership role when I still have so far to go myself
The day of our first meeting, I was terrified. But once my student joined the call, seeming very enthusiastic about meeting me, and started to talk about herself, I had a flashback to my own college experience. I remembered struggling to handle getting into a research lab and applying to graduate school. This student was probably going through something similar— feeling both
uncertainty and a fierce determination to achieve her professional goals. We ended the meeting setting some practical goals for the year, including writing her personal statement and practicing research presentations.
As our sessions continued, I still went into each one, worried that I would not be prepared
to solve every problem my student encountered. What mattered most, I realized, was not to be
some imaginary perfect teacher with all the answers, but to get to know my student including her hopes and ambitions, and offer whatever guidance and support I could, based on my own
experiences. When I did not know the answer to an issue she raised, I was honest about it and did my best to listen, provide feedback, and allow her to determine her best course of action.
Sometimes, I was there simply to provide a safe space to vent (发泄). I could help even when I did not have a solution.
A few months after submitting her graduate school applications, my student sent an email thanking me for my support and guidance, which she said helped increase her confidence. She
probably doesn’t know that she helped increase my confidence, too. This was a journey of mutual

21 .What change did the professor bring about in the author
22 .How did the author and the student end their first meeting

Born in 1949, Diana Nyad became interested in swimming when she was young. She even
won a swimming competition at her high school in Florida. Diana hoped to take part in the Olympics, but a bad illness stopped her. However, she didn’t give up. Instead, she started long-distance swimming.
Diana was a talented and strong athlete. In her long swims, she faced many difficulties, like far distance, danger, cold water and tiredness. She worked hard at long-distance swimming for ten years and set three important records: in 1970, she swam 10 miles in Lake Ontario; in 1972, she
swam 102.5 miles from an island in the Bahamas to Florida; in 1975, she swam around Manhattan Island.
Diana attempted to swim the distance between Florida and Cuba in 1978. Though the span

days, she had to give up for the sake of her own health and safety. Even so, she impressed the
world with her courage and strong desire to succeed. For Diana her strength of purpose was just as important as reaching Cuba. That is how she defined success. It did not matter that her swim came up short; she believed she had touched the other “shore”.

Shreyaa Venkat’s story of compassion started early in life. With parents who were
dedicated volunteers, she joined their projects as soon as she could walk. By fifth grade, her
passion had grown so strong that she began organizing her own community service events. “I like doing good things, but I’d rather do them with friends,” she says. “It brings me so much happiness and joy to help.”
A turning point came one day in Washington, D.C., when she was around 10 years old. She spotted a homeless man holding a sign that read “Hungry Need Food” and gave him her lunch — a banana, a chocolate bar, and a bottle of water. His face lit up with gratitude; he hadn’t eaten in a week. The simple act took just 30 seconds, but it opened her eyes to a bigger issue: the world

produces 1.5 times the food needed to feed everyone, yet so much goes to waste while hunger persists. It was mostly a problem of distribution. Motivated to make a difference, she founded NEST4US to connect surplus food with those in need.
Undaunted by her age, Shreyaa reached out to business owners via email, phone calls, and in-person visits to collect food donations — everything from bagels and bagged salads to hot
meals. “Thankfully, so many people want to help; all you have to do is ask,” she says. With the help of her friends, family, and the broader community, picked up the food and delivered it to local shelters and halls, ultimately feeding thousands of people.
But Shreyaa knew food alone wasn’t enough; people needed emotional support too. So, she added a personal touch: every donation came with a handwritten note offering words of love,
encouragement, and optimism. She asked volunteers of all ages, from 4 to 70, to write them,
helping those on the margins feel seen and valued. One homeless man shared with her, “I’ve kept every note — they lift me up and show me that people care.”
As NEST4US blossomed like a seed sown in fertile soil, its ripples drew hundreds of
volunteers together with a shared purpose. On her 13th birthday, Shreyaa turned the celebration into an act of profound selflessness. She hosted the party at a homeless shelter and gave up gifts for the quiet joy of bringing smiles to those in need — a tradition she continues to share with her sister to this day. By age 17, her efforts have touched countless lives, embodying Anne Frank’s timeless wisdom: “No one has ever become poor by giving.”

34 .How did Shreyaa manage to get food donations
