The mystery began as the twins looked around their new home—an old house with apple trees. What interested the twins most was the attic (阁楼). There they found a dirty old bottle. After cleaning it, a surprising note inside caught their attention. By stones where shadows lie, close to where old leaves die. Not far below, under the earth, lies a treasure of secret worth. If you search and do not fear; the past will soon be clear. Near the bed where dragonflies fly, dig by the wettest place nearby.
“A treasure!” Anna said excitedly.
“And these clues! Where old leaves die,” Sam read aloud.“It’s near those apple trees.”
“Let’s get a shovel (铲子) and borrow a metal detector (金属探测器) to find the treasure.”
With their parents’ help, Sam used the detector under the apple trees and found an old bottle cap. They also checked the stone wall but there was only a nail. All their early leads turned out to be wrong.
That night, Anna kept thinking about “bed” in the note. She looked it up in the dictionary and suddenly, an idea clicked. The next morning, she led everyone into the woods where a stone wall ran by a stream (小溪).
“Where’s the bed ” Sam asked.
“Bed also means the bottom of a stream and that's where dragonflies lay their eggs.” Anna explained, sweeping the detector. Beeeee. They dug carefully and found a lunch box.
“Look at all these things.” They pulled out the treasures: a postcard, a music record, a silver half-dollar, and a baseball card.
“It's a box from the past!” Sam shouted.“Look, 1964 on the baseball card!”
“But who buried (埋) it ” Anna wondered, holding up the postcard. On the back was another note:
The past is a mystery, the present a race, to find who I am, just find the place. Look where stories and words stay, or behind the doors where secrets hide away. Anna laughed. “Here we go again—another mystery to solve!”

We’ve all heard the terms “early bird” and “night owl (猫头鹰)”. For years, people divided others by sleep habits: early birds sleep and wake early, feeling most energetic in the morning; night owls, however, stay up late, are more awake at night, and like to sleep longer in the morning.
But recently, sleep researcher Dr. Michael Breus came up with a more exact way to group people—this way is based on “sleep chronotypes (时间类型)”. According to Dr. Breus, every person is divided into one of four sleep chronotypes: lion, bear, wolf, or dolphin. Each group is a little like the sleeping habits of the animal it is named after, and has its own special features.
Lions are the earliest. They’re ready for bed around 9 p.m. and wake naturally by 5 a.m., doing their best work before noon. Confident and leader-like, they often exercise early. But don’t ask a lion to do too much after noon—their energy usually goes down later in the day.
Bears sleep and wake up a little later than lions. Studies show that most humans are in the bear group because they usually sleep from around 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. and work best between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. ▲ This explains why the classic nine-to-five workday suits them so well.
Wolves are the true night owls. They don’t like waking up before 8 a.m. and their brains work best in the afternoon. They often have trouble getting to work on time for the usual 9 a.m. start. But if they are given tasks at the right time of day, they can get a lot done. With a free timetable, wolves can do a lot to help.
Dolphins’ sleep time is often not fixed. One reason is that they easily feel worried and keep thinking about things. So it’s important for dolphins to have a fixed time before bed to help their body and mind relax, so they can get ready for sleep. It’s interesting to note that dolphins are very creative and good at solving problems.
Knowing which group you are in helps you find out when you are most likely to feel energetic and get things done. If you plan your work and free time according to your natural sleep pattern, you can work well and sleep better.
34.Why are “early bird” and “night owl” mentioned at the beginning
A. To list two popular sleep habits.
B. To start the topic of a new finding.
C. To explain two animal habits.
D. To give the result of a sleep study.
35.Which of the following is the most suitable for ▲
A. Their sleep pattern is the most popular in society.
B. They sometimes feel tired during long meetings.
C. For this reason, they seldom need an alarm clock.
D. Surprisingly, many artists are members of this group.
36.If someone feels most creative in the afternoon but often arrives late for a 9 a.m. meeting, they are most likely a ________.
A. lion B. bear C. wolf D. dolphin
37.What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. Introduce a new research finding.
B. Give suggestions on using the finding.
C. Describe a common old understanding.
D. Provide more information on the finding.

Suddenly Anna knocked on a loose wooden board hidden behind the old poetry collection, and it creaked open to reveal a small yellowed diary. Turning the pages, they learned the treasure belonged to 12-year-old Ben, who lived here in the 1960s. He moved away suddenly and buried his favorite collections, hoping a later owner of the house would share his warm childhood joy. Smiling at the gentle words in the diary, the twins finally solved the whole mystery.
