Book a Girls’ Getaway
A trip with your ride-or-dies is a ticket to health-improving love and support. The BFFs who have been with you since your big-hair days enrich your life in more ways than you may realize.
A recent study found that adults with strong and consistent relationships were biologically younger, likely due to lower levels of chronic inflammation (慢性炎症), which can lead to serious problems like heart disease, diabetes, and neurodegeneration over time. Another research shows that people with strong social networks are 50% less likely to die prematurely from all causes. Escape the everyday with a team vacation to encourage those bonds and laugh until your stomach hurts. Here are three great places to visit with your girl pals.
For Party Lovers: New Orleans
Spring’s mild weather is perfect for exploring the French Quarter and the Historic New Orleans Collection Museum. Catch free concerts at Lafayette Square every Wednesday evening. Music relieves stress and strengthens social connections, while dancing gets your heart pounding and your blood moving.
For Beach Enthusiasts: Cancún
This Mexican hot spot is perfect for groups seeking max relaxation. All-inclusive vacation spots let you focus on bonding and recharging. Time by the ocean lowers stress and lifts your energy, and water sports make exercise easy and fun. Don’t miss the fresh seafood and local produce!
For History Fans: Washington D.C.
Visit national museums for a great workout. Most museums are free, but special exhibitions like “Spring in Bloom” cost $18 for adults and $12 for children. During the Cherry Blossom Festival, a “Cherry Blossom Cruise” costs $30 for adults and $20 for children. A special offer: buy boat tickets and get 40% off exhibition admission for the same number of people.
So grab your girls, pick a destination, and start planning. Because time with friends isn’t just fun — it’s good for you.

Stormzy, the British rapper and musician, has long championed the power of reading calling it a “superpower” as he backed a new initiative aimed at encouraging people who don’t usually read to pick up a book.
His publishing imprint, Merky Books, which is part of Penguin(a book publishing giant), is publishing one of this year’s six Quick Reads — short, accessible books created “specifically for non-readers, people with short attention spans (持续时间), and neurodivergent readers,” according to the Reading Agency, which has run the initiative for 20 years.
The Merky Books title is Hunger Pains by Derek Owusu, a 128-page novel centered on Ray, a fitness enthusiast whose strong interest in health causes problems. Owusu, who did not read a book until the age of 24, said he wished he had discovered Quick Reads earlier. “They’re accessible, affordable and gentle in the approach, allowing new readers or those who have stopped reading to find their way into the pleasure and fulfilment of reading.” He added that he was excited to be part of something that helps people feel confident enough to pick up a book and enjoy it.
This year, the Reading Agency will also launch Quick Reads as audiobooks and give 500,000 books to prisons across the UK. “The titles go through a careful review process, including testing for readability, concentration, and suitability for adults rebuilding reading confidence,” the charity says. The other Quick Reads titles published this year include works by Carmel Harrington, Rachel Hore, Louise Jensen, Rosie Goodwin, and Leye Adenle.
Stormzy emphasized the great power of literature. “Reading helped me when I was young and it still does today,” he encouraged anyone who doesn’t usually read to try a Quick Read, adding, “Music and books are both about finding your voice. We are all made of stories — they define who we are.”

Yogurt making dates to around 7,000 years ago. Modern industrialized techniques have simplified the process while traditional practices are more varied. In parts of Eurasia, the key to a sour yogurt treat can be found moving along the forest floor-Red wood ants and their microbes (微生物) acidify and thicken milk, helping turn the liquid into creamy yogurt, researchers report on October 3 in iScience.
Factory-made yogurt ensures the food is safe to eat, and companies can make more to sell. “With such a controlled process, we achieve a consistent flavor profile that appeals to a wide audience,” says Veronica Sinotte, a microbial ecologist at the University of Copenhagen. The taste of homemade yogurt, on the other hand, varies depending on who made it and munity members in the Bulgarian ancestral home of Sevgi Mutlu Sirakova (coworker of Veronica), for instance, note that “if they were given a bowl of yogurt, they could tell us exactly which household it came from.”
Sirakova’s family village is part of the region where the practice of making yogurt with help from red wood ants was once popular. There, Sinotte, Sirakova and their team placed four live ants into a jar of warmed raw cow’s milk and then buried the jar in an ant nest. The next day, the now acidic milk had entered the early stages of becoming yogurt, with a sour, plant-like taste.
More analyses showed that red wood ants harbor necessary acid-producing bacteria that thicken milk, including Fructilactobacillus, a species also found in flour mixtures. The ants contribute formic acid, a chemical defense against enemies, to the mix too. Milk-digesting enzymes (酶) from both ants and bacteria help break the milk down into creamy yogurt.
Frozen or dried ants carry microbes that don’t function as well as living ants do, the team found. But live ants that can, in rare cases, carry infections that may cause sickness or liver disease, Sinotte says. “I wouldn’t recommend the average person try making it at home.”
8. What is a feature of homemade yogurt
A. Its varied taste. B. Its stable quality.
C. Its uniform flavor. D. Its efficient production.
9. What enables wood ants to help make yogurt
A. The acid for defense. B. The bacteria from the ants.
C. The species unique to flour. D. The enzymes from one source.
10. What does the underlined word “harbor” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. process B. infect C. require D. contain
11. Which is the best title for the text
A. The Future of Wood Ant. B. The Secret of Ant Yogurt.
C. The History of Yogurt Making. D. The Danger of Homemade Yogurt.

There are worse things you could do than watch six parts of something you’ve already seen. Still, binge-watching (刷剧) gets a bad reputation. It’s been widely called avoidance and a waste of time. But a study has found that binge-watching might provide many benefits.
If you’re anything like us, you’re getting well and truly into the routine of settling in for comfortable season. As the days get shorter and the weather starts to cool, all we want to do is settle down on the sofa with a drink in hand, watching re-runs of our favourite shows or getting stuck into a great book.
But let’s face it: sometimes a little regret. When Netflix pops up with the “Still watching ”, it’s hard not to feel judged. But, the great news is that you can set that feeling aside — a recent study has found that binge-watching could even be good for us.
The research published in the academic journal Acta Psychologica spoke to over 300 undergraduate students and asked them to identify three memorable stories they had experienced and whether they thought about them long after.
It found that when participants had “binge-watched” a show which was classed as watching three parts or more in one sitting, they were more likely to have “retrospective imaginative involvement” — meaning they were more likely to remember what they had watched and connect with it. The study also guessed that binge-watching might allow audiences to develop richer ideas about characters and worlds, allowing them to think more deeply about what they had seen or revisit it later to relieve stress and improve well-being.
While the research did acknowledge that there are limited studies on the positive effects of binge-watching on mental health, its initial research shows that sitting down for a marathon streaming session could be good for our mental health, allowing us to escape to different worlds and think more deeply about our connection to certain situations and characters.
So, next time you’re feeling regretful, push through that feeling and press “next episode”. You deserve it as long as your work and health aren’t suffering.
12. What is the common view about binge-watching
A. It makes people become much lazier.
B. It helps people relieve stress effectively.
C. It allows people to escape into ideal worlds.
D. It is considered a meaningless entertainment.
13. What may make people feel ashamed
A. Spending hours watching TV in a row. B. Joining in marathon streaming sessions.
C. Settling on the sofa with a drink in hand. D. Setting aside the “Still watching” reminder.
14. What can we learn from the research in Acta Psychologica
A. It has been widely accepted by psychologists.
B. It surveyed students to compare diverse media.
C. It is an early study on its psychological effects.
D. It touched on both mental and emotional effects.
15. What does the author mainly intend to tell us
A. The misunderstanding of binge-watching.
B. The process of a study on binge-watching.
C. The reasons for regret over binge-watching.
D. The healthy ways to binge-watch TV shows.

VITAMIN STACKING is social media-speak for combining pills to boost the health payoffs of each. ____16____. Although you won’t likely get a shot of “morning energy” or “beauty power” as some TikTok influencers claim, there’s solid science behind the concept — though there are a few things you should keep in mind.
It is true that when you take certain vitamins and minerals together you may get relatively greater benefits. “Certain nutrients work well together. ____17____.” Nicholas Church, M.D. explains, a family medicine physician and founder of Somerset Medical.
____18____. “With adequate vitamin D levels you might absorb about 30% to 40% of the calcium you eat compared with roughly 10% to 15% absorption without sufficient vitamin D,” says Dr. Church. Another power couple is iron and vitamin C. Iron is key for healthy blood, and vitamin C plays a significant role in helping your body absorb iron. “I often drink a glass of orange juice while taking an iron supplement. ____19____.” Dr. Church adds.
But for most supplements, stacking doesn’t make much of a difference, and some actually should not be taken at the same time because they may counteract (抵消) each other. Pairs to avoid include iron with calcium or zinc, calcium with magnesium, and vitamin B12 with vitamin C. Multi-vitamins that include such pairs are fine, however, says Amy Margulies, a registered dietitian nutritionist. ____20____.
If you want to go deep with vitamin stacking, speak to a dietitian, and always talk to your doctor before starting a new supplement.
A. There are two common couples.
B. The small amounts make them safe.
C Take calcium and vitamin D for instance.
D. You should adopt a cautious attitude, however.
E. It can be a smart move, depending on what you take.
F. It means one helps the body absorb the other more efficiently.
G. The former helps change the latter into a form easier to absorb.

Before Rachel had entered this new fourth-grade class, school meant nothing pleasant. Partly deaf since early childhood, Rachel wore two strong hearing aids. And the time she had spent in her hushed (寂静的) world when she was younger had left her a shy and withdrawn girl.
Rachel was clever, however, and early in her life had found comfort in books. In books she had friends. In books she had no disability. In books she could do anything. During her earlier years in school, Rachel had developed the custom of turning off her hearing aids and sitting quietly in the back of the room reading. When a teacher tried to pull her back into the classroom, she would fly into such a rage that other kids would be shocked to stare at her. And so, more and more, her teachers gave up and left her alone to read.
Knowing her previous performance, now both her new teacher and the principal were worried about her effect on the class, and hesitant to accept her. But Rachel’s parents begged them not to give up on their daughter. So the teacher, Mrs. Sullivan, decided to do her best with Rachel and made a difference.
Whenever Mrs. Sullivan saw her slipping away into books, she made Rachel come back into the lesson at hand. Three or four times a week, flying out of control, Rachel would shout “I won’t do this!” and throw her books off her desk. But no matter how many times Rachel exploded, the teacher would explain that she was not going to get away with it.
After two months, the outbursts became less frequent, and Rachel slowly began to take part in the class. She started acting like an ordinary student. More than ordinary, for she had read so much that there was hardly a subject to which she could not contribute. While delighted at Rachel’s progress in class, the teacher noticed that other children were still frightened of Rachel.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;

A Call for a Greener Canteen
It has come to my attention that food waste and messy tables remain a common problem in our school canteen. Such bad manners do harm to our dining environment.
It is the hard work of farmers and cooks that makes every meal possible. Wasting food shows disrespect for their efforts and responsibility for the global food crisis. Only when we realize its importance can we take action wisely. Choosing proper food finishing our meals and returning tableware are simple but meaningful deeds. What we do daily will shape our canteen environment.
A tidy canteen shows our good qualities. It’s high time that we should save food and share respect.
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】
Concerned, Mrs. Sullivan came up with a thoughtful plan. The next day, she arranged for a demonstration of how hearing aids work, an experience that turned out to be truly eye-opening for the whole class. Only then did they realize why Rachel sometimes seemed unresponsive — it was the hearing aid, not unfriendliness, that created the distance. Inspired by their curiosity, Mrs. Sullivan gently encouraged the class to make friends with Rachel. And they did. To everyone’s surprise, Rachel’s face gradually lit up with a shy smile.
The rest of Rachel’s fourth-grade year got better. Classmates soon discovered what a delightful companion Rachel was.
