Every year, millions of birds are killed or hurt when they fly into buildings. Why does this happen
1 Birds are flying into windows and tall buildings that are all covered by glass.
Many birds fly from one place to another. Most of the time, they live in the wild, such as forests and wetlands. 2 They might see small trees and flowers inside a window and want to rest on these plants. The birds do not know there is glass between them and the plants. 3
Some birds fly at night. They use the moon and stars to help guide them in the right direction. Tall buildings with lights on at night can confuse (迷惑) the birds. 4 The birds see the light, but they cannot tell that the light is coming from inside a building. They fly toward the light and crash into a building. On many mornings, there might be several dead birds lying on the ground.
5 Many office buildings now turn off their lights at night. This helps reduce the number of birds that fly into buildings and it also helps save energy.
A.The answer is glass.
B.People are trying to solve the problem.
C.These birds have no idea what glass is.
D.As a result, they fly right into the glass.

F.This is a big problem, especially on foggy and rainy nights.

Back in 2010, when Meera Chandran visited her homeland, she discovered that her ancestral land was covered with Lantana Camara, a plant that is able to kill native plants and damage (破坏) the ecological (生态的) balance. Meera, then a worker of an IT company and someone who has always been interested in ecology, decided to clean up the 8-acre (8英亩的) land to take the plants away from it.
Instead of using the earliest method of buying an earth mover (推土机), she asked some farmers to pull out the plants by hand. “If the seeds of Lantana are covered with sunlight when earth is moved, it would promote (促进) their growth. Also, using an earth mover would damage the natural flora (植物群) of the land,” says Meera.
So the land was cleared using the cut root-stock method (截根法), which means cutting the roots 2-3 inches below the earth to control its ability to spread. Next, she turned the land back into a forest area by planting native plants. “The land lies in the eastern part of Western Ghats and after researching what type of plants are included in the area’s natural flora, we planted them,” she says.
This was not an easy task. It took three years to clear Lantana away and two more years to plant native plants. Halfway through Meera decided to turn this into an official action and set up Forest First Smith in 2010 to protect native plants and encourage farmers to grow different native plants in farmlands.
“We have protected over 150 kinds of native plants of Western Ghats so far. The plants have been planted in an area of more than 300 acres in Kerala’s Wayanad and Karnataka’s Kodagu,” says the protector.
But Meera says this is never a single-handed project. All these became a reality with the support from the state forest departments, local communities and like-minded (志同道合的) persons. From 3-5 workers to more than 40 from the communities today, the organization has grown greatly.

Recently, “emotional (情感的) spending” has become popular in China. Young people may find 20 yuan for a cup of coffee too expensive, but gladly spend over 200 yuan for a coffee cup soft toy. They care about the emotional value it brings more than its practical use.

Playing the piano can be a challenging task, especially when your fingers can’t move fast enough. However, researchers created a special robotic (机器人的) hand that helps piano players improve their speed and skills.
This robotic hand is worn over the fingers and moves them faster than a person can on their own. Piano players who used it found that they could play difficult parts more easily. The idea came from a scientist, Shinichi Furuya, who wants to help musicians practice more efficiently (高效).
In order to test this robotic hand, 60 professional pianists practiced a difficult finger pattern. Some used the robotic hand to move their fingers quickly, while others practiced without it. As a result, those who used the robotic hand improved their speed by about 6%. Surprisingly, even the hand that didn’t use it got faster! So scientists believe the robotic hand helps improve the connection between the brain and the hands. This might explain why both hands improve, even though only one uses the robotic hand.
The robotic hands aren’t just for piano players. They are also used in medical care and sports. In the future, more complex (复杂) robotic hands will be used for other activities, like medical operations (手术).
In a word, the robotic hand is a promising tool. Although it’s still in the development stage, it offers exciting possibilities for improving skills in different fields.

①IT’S A TYPICAL morning: you wake up, take a shower, brush your teeth, and then prick (刺;扎) your arm with a tiny needle (针尖) . Wait, what Unless you have a serious disease such as diabetes (糖尿病), you probably haven’t ever tested your own blood. But in the future, that might change.
②The company Cor already sells a system for home blood testing. You stick your arm using a supposedly painless, one-off, blood-drawing cartridge (针筒) about the size of a lipstick. Then you stick the cartridge into a device (装置) that looks like the base for an electric toothbrush. A few minutes later, an app on your phone reminds you with updated information, including your present health data (数据) and tips on what to eat and how to exercise during the day.
③It’s true that blood covers a wealth of information about a person’s health. Blood tests can show if a person is infected (感染) with a disease or at risk for a series of problems, including a heart attack or a stroke (中风). But most people don’t test their own blood until a doctor says it’s time. Healthy young adults get regular (有规律的) blood tests about every five years. These tests happen at a lab, where a nurse sticks a long needle into the arm to draw out several tubes full of blood. Cor and similar companies, such as WellnessFX, are trying to change all that. They think people have chances of knowing more information about their own health.
④But not everyone is sure that regular blood testing for healthy people is a great idea. Cor’s system is expensive and may not offer many advantages. “The lightest result here is that you lose your money and then you’re reminded to get more sleep and to eat more fruits, vegetables, and fish,” Pieter Cohen of Harvard Medical School told the New York Times. “The worst result is that you end up getting frightened by probably abnormal (不正常的) results that are actually completely normal for you.”
⑤Moreover, the results of a home blood test might be wrong. It’s hard to get correct results from a tiny amount of blood. So what do you think Is caring about your own health through pinpricks the way of the future Or is it better to leave blood testing to medical professionals
40.Why does the author mention the typical morning in the first paragraph
A.To explain a scene. B.To introduce the topic. C.To provide an example. D.To make a comparison.
41.What can we learn about the company Cor’s blood-testing system
A.It is painless and cheap to use. B.It has won popularity among people.
C.It offers correct health information about our body. D.It may give advice on our diet according to the health data.
42.If we divide the passage into three parts, how will you deal with it
A.①; ②③④; ⑤ B.①②③; ④; ⑤ C.①; ②③; ④⑤ D.①②; ③④; ⑤
43.Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A.Home blood tests: yes or no B.Should blood tests be allowed at home
C.A new system of improving your health. D.Home blood testing: your health monitor!
