WHAT IS WIND CHILL
When you check the predicted temperature, you may sometimes be greeted with two values: the air temperature and the “feels like” temperature. The main temperature value represents how hot or cold the air is, but the second temperature takes the strength of the wind into account. Called wind chill, this value indicates how the air temperature will feel on your skin when you step outside. When there is more wind, heat escapes from you more quickly, lowering the wind chill temperature.
Displaying this value on forecasts means that people can make a more informed decision on what to wear and even whether to go outside. When wind chill reduces the temperature far into negative values, skin temperature will decrease rapidly, followed by your internal body temperature. This increases the chances of developing hypothermia (体温过低) and frostbite.
Wind chill not only impacts humans, but other animals and plants as well. In plants, wind chill stresses don’t come from heat loss. Rather, wind chill increases the moisture (水分) loss from leaves and dries out the plant. Whether it’s in the form of drying or freezing, wind chill calculations show the great influence of the wind on the temperature of your environment.
Check this chart to see how the wind alters the temperature your body feels.
21.What does including wind chill in forecasts help to do
A.Track frostbite cases. B.Predict road safety.
C.Guide clothing choices. D.Judge wind direction.
22.Which situation falls into the “5 minutes” frostbite zone
A.- 35℃ with a 20 km/h wind. B.- 30℃ with a 60 km/h wind.
C.- 15℃ with a 70 km/h wind. D.- 10℃ with a 100 km/h wind.
23.Where does the text most probably appear
A.In a physics textbook. B.In a plant-care brochure.
C.In a daily weather forecast. D.In a popular science magazine.

Blind patients can read and recognize faces again with a “revolutionary” bionic (仿生的) chip, signaling a “new era” for artificial vision.
It is a super- thin wireless microchip, measuring 2 mm by 2 mm, which is inserted under the retina (视网膜) and links to a video-camera on a pair of augmented-reality glasses. The device works with the camera recording the scene in front of the patient, and then AI changes the information to an infrared (红外线的) signal sent to the chip. Upon receiving the signal, the chip stimulates undamaged inner retinal neurons, so they can transmit the signal to the brain, where it is interpreted as vision. The chip insertion takes just a few hours, activated after a month, but it takes patients several more months to learn how to see again using the device.
Dozens of patients who lost their eyesight through age-related macular degeneration (AMD) were fitted with the device on a trial including Moorfields Hospital in London, with more than 80% seeing major improvements. About 600,000 people in the UK suffer from AMD, a number that is expected to increase with an ageing population.
In the new trial, 38 patients who were suffering from geographic atrophy were enrolled in trials across Britain,France, and Italy. After one year of using the system, most participants showed significant improvement in their ability to read letters on a standard eye chart, with an average improvement of 25.5 letters and five lines, and one improving by as many as 59 letters, or 12 lines.
Mahi Muqit, senior consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital, said, “These are elderly patients who were no longer able to read, write or recognize faces due to lost vision. They couldn’t even see the vision chart before. Now they’ve gone from being in darkness to being able to start using their vision again. In the history of artificial vision, this represents a new era. Blind patients are actually able to have meaningful central vision restoration, which has never been done before.”
24.How does the bionic chip help blind patients see
A.It helps patients learn how to use the glasses.
B.It serves as a stimulus to work on the neurons.
C.It inserts the camera under the patient’s retina.
D.It records scenes and sends signals to the brain.
25. What can we learn about AMD from Paragraph 3
A.AMD is the leading cause of blindness in the UK.
B.The number of AMD patients may rise in the future.
C.Less than 20% of AMD patients showed no improvement.
D.Moorfields Hospital is the best hospital to conduct the trial.
26.What is Mahi Muqit’s attitude towards the bionic chip
A.Optimistic. B.Objective. C.Dismissive. D.Doubtful.
27.What is the main purpose of the text
A.To discuss a social problem. B.To explain a technical challenge.
C.To introduce a medical achievement. D.To compare treatments for eye diseases.

Magnesium (镁) is “the relaxation mineral” and a critical nutrient involved in at least 300 enzyme (酶) reactions within the human body — and according to some studies, up to 600. This means magnesium is fundamental for muscle and nerve function, regulating blood sugar and blood pressure, and producing protein, bone, and DNA.Given its central role in so many physiological functions, it’s clear why a magnesium insufficiency can lead to symptoms such as tiredness, muscle pains, mental issues, irregular heart rhythms, and increased stress.
However, many people aren’t getting enough magnesium. According to experts like Mark Hyman, MD, a leader in functional medicine, there are multiple reasons we’re not getting the recommended amounts of magnesium. Primarily, our meals are more processed and less nutrient-dense than ever before. Furthermore, the soil where our food grows is increasingly stripped of (剥夺) magnesium. Adding to this issue, our consumption of coffee, alcohol, and sugar, all of which can reduce magnesium levels, is also on the rise.
So by the time you see your doctor for muscle pains, poor sleep, unexplained weight problems, urinary (泌尿的) issues or another symptom of low magnesium, it’s likely you’ll discuss much magnesium you should take per day, and the best ways to get more magnesium.
The National Institutes of Health has set the upper limit of magnesium that you should take in addition form at 350 milligrams. Dr. Hyman suggests a daily supplemental magnesium intake of 300 milligrams. However, consult your healthcare provider to determine the proper amount for your unique needs, as some individuals may benefit from higher amounts.
Magnesium supplements can work, but experts suggest adding magnesium-rich foods to your diet is the best way to increase magnesium intake. These include dark leafy greens (spinach, kale), nuts and seeds (pumpkin seeds, almonds, chia seeds), whole grains (brown rice, quinoa), legumes (black beans, chickpeas), avocado, and dark chocolate. Additionally, an Epsom salt bath is a relaxing way to absorb magnesium through the skin.
28.What can we learn about magnesium from the text
A.It involves exactly 300 human enzyme reactions.
B.It has key effects on blood sugar- pressure regulation.
C.It is mainly responsible for relieving mental illnesses.
D.It may lead to increased muscle strength if insufficient.
29.What can be inferred from paragraph 2
A.Lifestyle greatly influences health. B.People should get more nutrients.
C.Medicine performs vital functions. D.People should not consume sugar.
30.What is the primary purpose of citing numbers in the paragraph 4
A.To present facts. B.To contrast opinions.
C.To attract readers. D.To add precision.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.The Proven Magnesium Effect B.The Critical Magnesium Intake
C.The Missing Relaxation Mineral D.The Growing Supplement Market

Hobbies are more than just a fun way to kill time.A widespread and harmful misunderstanding is that engaging in hobbies mirrors a lack of self discipline. 36 In fact, hobbies can provide essential balance for our lives and enhance overall well being. The benefits you obtain will depend on your hobby—taking up jogging, for instance, will benefit your cardiovascular (心血管的) health more than crossword puzzles, which may improve your cognitive health. The point is that nearly all hobbies can provide measurable positive health benefits.
If we regularly spend time on hobbies, we usually enjoy a higher level of fitness. 37 A 2023 comprehensive analysis of multiple studies found strong evidence that engaging in leisure activities can improve health by protecting against heart disease and age related physical decline. The report, published in the journal The Lancet Psychiatry, found that for people who were suffering from a chronic (慢性的) illness, doing a hobby helped them manage their symptoms and even slowed the progression of their illness. But another of the researchers’ findings was perhaps the most striking: the strong relationship between leisure activities and increased longevity (寿命). 38 It found that older adults who engage in regular leisure activities have a 19% lower risk of dying from disease, one of the most important factors affecting longevity.
39 They are vital to sustaining our mental health.People who made a conscious effort each day to spend time doing hobbies (no matter what they were) showed an average boost of 8% in well being and a 10% drop in stress and anxiety, according to a 2023 study published in the Journal of Personality.Dr.Hafeez, who has led several massive studies on hobbies, says, “On a fundamental level, humans need to find the meaning of life, something that gives them a sense of purpose. 40 ” He adds, “Engaging in what you enjoy greatly enhances your well being.”
With all these visible benefits of hobbies, why not just make time for activities that bring you joy and fulfillment every day
A.Science backs this up.
B.Hobbies make us happier.
C.You gain a lot from hobbies.
D.Nothing could be further from the truth.
E.The more you engage in hobbies, the longer you will live.
F.A different study conducted last year confirmed the connection.
G.And being able to pursue your passion really contributes to that.

When we arrived in Tournus, Gabriel and I parked our bikes near the wharf and walked to the town square, starving after a 33-kilometer ride. We made it within one and a half hours, which is really something! We planned to get lunch and then bike back to Macon, a city on the Saone River where I was staying with Gabriel’s family for the summer.
It was market day, bustling with locals buying groceries and tourists hunting for souvenirs. We bought a long, thin loaf of bread called a baguette and some Brie, a soft cheese I’m obsessed with. It tastes awesome with the crispy crust of the baguette. While eating, I noticed a girl in a USA Basketball T-shirt smiling at us.
Basketball is popular in France too. You can even watch NBA games on TV. The girl stopped to buy cookies with someone that I guessed was her mom because they looked so much alike. We later saw her and her mom by the river, enjoying pastries(糕点) on a bench near a riverboat named Voyageur, which had docked earlier. Then they boarded the boat. As it was preparing to leave, I spotted a colorful shopping bag on the bench. The girl had left it! Gabriel and I called out to her in French and English, waving the bag. When the girl noticed us, she was surprised but disappointed as the boat began to leave. Gabriel suggested throwing it to her, but I feared it would fall into the river. We had to find another way !
Running alongside the boat, Gabriel learned from a sailor that the next stop was Macon-our destination as well. It would take the boat just under two hours at a speed of 12 knots. Gabriel searched on the phone about the speed. “That’s 22 kilometers-or 14 miles-per hour,” he said. “Do you think we can keep up ” I asked. With a laugh, he replied, “We’re about to find out!”
注意:1、续写词数应为150左右;2、请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I threw the bag over my shoulder, and we set off.

Text 10
When your doctor asks how often you exercise or what you've been eating lately,do you always give her an honest answer
According to a new study, three fifths to four fifths of the people surveyed have not been completely honest with their doctors about information that could be relevant to their health. What's more, more than a third of them didn't speak up when they disagreed with their doctor's
recommendation.
When those people explained why they weren't straightforward, they said that they didn't want to be lectured about how bad certain behaviors were.
The study included two populations:the first group consisted of 2,011 participants who averaged 24 years old,and the second group was made up of 2,499 participants who averaged 61 years old.
Scientists from four American universities carried out the study, and their results have been published online. In the study, the first author expressed her concern."It's surprising. If patients are withholding information about what they're eating,or whether they are taking their medication,it can have significant results for their health-especially if they have an illness," she said.

Take Care of Our Eyes and Avoid Short Sight
Dear fellow students,
We are living in an era of rapid technological development, when electronic products have become an indispensable part of our daily lives. However, along with this comes a sharp rise of short-sight rate among teenagers from 14.5% of 6-year-olds to over 80% of high school students.
With National Eye Caring Day approaching, our school calls on everyone to pay attention to eye health. Firstly, develop eye caring habits such as looking into the distance every 20-30 minutes to rest our eyes. Secondly, participate actively in outdoor activities. Most importantly, ensure sufficient sleep and avoid staying up late.

We pedaled as fast as we could, our hearts pounding with excitement and determination. We skillfully navigated through the traffic, taking sharp turns with precision and Gabriel occasionally glancing at his phone to monitor our speed. Our legs burned with effort, but the thought of returning the girl’s bag kept us going. As we drew closer to Macon, the sight of the Voyageur docking at the wharf came into view.We flew off our bikes and dashed to the boat, waving the bag at the girl.
The girl’s eyes lit up with astonishment while her mom clapped in delight. They hadn’t anticipated that we would make such an effort to pedal our bikes and catch up with them. The girl eagerly rushed over and took the bag from me, showering us with heartfelt thanks in fluent French. Her mom joined in, offering us some pastries as a token of their appreciation. We waved goodbye, feeling a sense of accomplishment as the Voyageur sailed off into the distance, leaving us with a memory of kindness and determination that would last a lifetime.
