In the winter months the temperature in most of Canada usually stays below 0℃. However, in some parts of Canada, such as southern British Columbia, the temperature rarely goes below 0℃. In most areas where people live, snow will be on the ground from mid-December to mid-March. Though Canada’s winter may be much colder and longer than you are used to, it can be very enjoyable. For many Canadians, being active in winter is an important part of enjoying life. There are many outdoor winter activities, including skiing, ice fishing, walking, and skating. Joining in one of these activities may help you appreciate winter and enjoy your time outside in the snow.
Dressing for Winter
During winter in Canada, you will need warm clothing. If possible, arrive with these items or be prepared to buy them soon after your arrival. You will need:
☆ warm waterproof boots
☆ a scarf for your neck
☆ a hat that covers your ears
☆ gloves for your hands
☆ thick winter coats, pants and sweaters
Layers Keep You Warm
It’s a good idea to layer your clothing by, for example, wearing a T-shirt and a sweater underneath a jacket. If you become too hot, it’s always easier to remove a piece of clothing than to add another. On the West Coast, prepare to dress for cool rainy or snowy weather. You will need:
☆ a warm waterproof coat
☆ a waterproof hat
☆ an umbrella
☆ rain boots or snow boots

By the time she was 85 years old, Joy Ryan had never seen the ocean or mountains. Now, she’s 94 years old and has seen every corner of the U.S. after visiting all 63 U.S. national parks. Joy went on the epic journey with her grandson, Brad Ryan, who was first inspired to travel with his grandmother in 2015. “When I learned she had never seen the great wildernesses of America—deserts, mountains, oceans, you name it, I thought that was something that I would regret if I didn’t get myself involved in some way,” Brad said. Although they initially planned just to visit the Great Smoky Mountains, they had such a great time that they felt inspired to continue their journey by hitting up all the national parks in the U.S. “I think we’re two peas in a pod when it comes to our desire for travel and adventure,” Brad said.
The 63rd and final stop on their tour was the National Park of American Samoa. There was a reason why they left this park until the very end. “It’s the only U.S. national park that’s south of the equator. We can enjoy the beautiful tropical paradise,” Brad said. “But as we’ve come to learn from the rangers who work there, American Samoa is an island community that is firmly rooted in family.”
The fact that a grandmother in her 90s completed such a long journey may inspire others, but Brad has always known his grandmother as an inspiration who lives up to her name. “She has already lived from a place of gratitude and joy,” he said. “That’s a power…and a choice that we all have. Not many people dream of spending long and cold winters in the Norwegian Arctic. Christiane Ritter, the author of A Woman in the Polar Night, certainly did not. She had been perfectly content to tend to her home in Austria while her husband busied himself up north. But when Hermann Ritter wrote to his wife of wonderful journeys across ice and snow and coloured light illuminating (照亮) polar skies, Christiane began to warm to the idea.
Equipped with the latest heating equipment that 1933 had to offer, Ritter boarded a ship and headed north to join her husband in Spitsbergen, Norway. She would not return until the following year. A Woman in the Polar Night, originally published in 1938, is her appealing account of life in the Arctic before, during and after the fjord (峡湾) freezes over.
There is no shortage of distaste written into the first third of the book, and readers will delight in Ritter’s frank impressions and honest remarks. “Spitsbergen is a wonderful country,” says a passenger on Ritter’s ship. “It’s a terrible country,” Ritter thinks to herself. “Nothing but water, fog, and rain.” When she arrives at the “poor hut” meant to be her home for the next several months, she inquires about the bedroom her husband had promised in his letters. The wood to build it have not yet washed ashore, he replies, and instead offers his wife a sleeping bag.
As the “guardian of the hut”, Ritter has to adjust to the challenges of minding the house in the Arctic. She is surprised that her husband and their companion, a Norwegian hunter named Karl, are unbothered by the lack of baking powder in their winter food and horrified by their resolve to “invent” some.
The writing does not focus on battles with violent winds, but charms its reader with its simple directness. Ritter eventually comes to find the polar night attractive, looking like “the dream of a world that is visible before it takes shape as a reality”.

D
There’s an inner desire amongst most people to explore our planet. There’s this sense in modern society that somehow we will find a better existence or we’ll find happiness by going on holiday. I think we’ve almost been conditioned to become tourists, to the extent that a lot of people engage in tourism without actually considering why they’re doing so.
There are plenty of people who will go to the same place every year, because they’re comfortable and familiar with it. People are experiencing less and less the places they are at. They might be there in body, but not necessarily in mind, because a lot of people are constantly thinking:“How am I going to present myself to my social media group back home through my online posts?”
But this is just one side of the problem. On the other side, our travel has taken a toll on the environment. It is reported that the carbon emissions from air travel accounted for 2.5% of global emissions in 2019, and this figure may be three times higher by 2050.
I admit that there has been a considerable increase in people’s awareness about the environment. And some people say that this can eventually lead to a shift in our behaviour as tourists. However, I can’t share their optimism. A lot of research has been done into the extent to which tourists are willing to adapt their behaviour. And even those people who regularly consume or behave in an environ-mentally friendly fashion actually temporarily forget their environmental commitments, and behave like normal tourists. They do suffer some kind of eco-guilt, but nevertheless they continue to travel, and they continue to fly.
I’m old enough to remember when tourism was just the summer holiday, and you would look forward to those two weeks a year when you would go on holiday. It was special and meaningful, but nowadays it is so easy to travel. Travel is now seen as a right, not as a privilege. However, to some extent, I hope there will be a significant rise in the cost of travel, or at least in air travel. In my opinion, only in this way can people realise the value of travel experience and really enjoy it. Also, only in this way can many problems arising with the development of tourism be properly solved.
语篇解读:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了现在很多游客旅游缺乏有意义的体验,且旅游会对环境造成破坏,即便游客有环保意识也难改变行为,作者希望通过提高旅行成本来解决问题。
( D )32. What is the problem with most tourists according to the author?
A. They don’t care about our planet at all.
B. They post too many photos on social media.
C. They can hardly find the right place to explore.
D. They fail to have a meaningful travelling experience.
【解析】细节理解题。根据第一段中的“I think we’ve almost been conditioned to become tourists, to the extent that a lot of people engage in tourism without actually considering why they’re doing so.”及第二段中的“There are plenty of people…are experiencing less and less the places they are at. They might be there in body, but not necessarily in mind…”可知,作者提到大多数游客的问题是他们只是身体在旅游,却没有用心去感受,即他们无法获得有意义的旅行体验。
( B )33. What does the underlined part “taken a toll on” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Improved.
B. Damaged.
C. Saved.
D. Shaped.
【解析】词义猜测题。根据画线词后面的“It is reported that the carbon emissions from air travel accounted for 2.5% of global emissions in 2019, and this figure may be three times higher by 2050.”可知,此处说明了旅游对环境产生了不良影响。taken a toll on意为“对……造成损害”,与damaged意思相近。
( A )34. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Tourists can hardly be affected by environmental awareness.
B. Tourists are unaware of the effect of their behaviour.
C. Tourists’ environmental awareness has been increased.
D. Tourists find it hard to travel without harming the environment.
【解析】推理判断题。根据第四段中的“And even those people who…forget their environmental commitments, and behave like normal tourists. They do suffer some kind of eco-guilt, but nevertheless they continue to travel, and they continue to fly.”可知,尽管一些游客有环保意识,但很难改变自己的旅游行为,说明游客很难受到环保意识的影响。
( C )35. Why does the author hope airline tickets will be more expensive?
A. To limit the development of tourism.
B. To create a sense of equality in society.
C. To help people value their travelling experience.
D. To make people less excited about travelling.
【解析】细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“only in this way can people realise the value of travel experience and really enjoy it. Also, only in this way can many problems arising with the development of tourism be properly solved.”可知,作者希望机票更贵是因为他希望通过增加旅行成本的方式使得人们重视他们的旅行体验。

 37 .
Travel means new foods, cultures and places to explore. Try speaking that new language or eat a new kind of food you never knew existed. When you’re thrown outside of your normal circumstances, you’ll discover more about who you are and what you’re like.

And the more challenges you take on, the more convinced of yourself you become.
Choices and organising skills.
What’s the best route to take so I can see all the major attractions? What’s the best way to get to the next city and back so I don’t miss my flight? How should I organise my itinerary (旅程)? 40 . You have to organise your trip so that you have a place to stay and transportation to and from certain destinations.

A few months later, in July, I found 60 (me) in Guilin. The moment I’d heard of its beauty, I’d been eager to visit. I boarded a bamboo raft on the Li River. The owner, a 61 (joy) local, sang folk songs 62 we sailed through the beautiful scenery. Finally, in October, I made my way 63 Zhangye Danxia National Geopark. The long bus ride 64 (forget) instantly as I laid eyes on the rainbow-hued rock formations. 第二节 读后续写(满分 25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A few years ago I worked in an international company that sold computer devices. I had to travel a lot over the country as a part of my work. I remember that I was at a stage of my life where I only cared about how to make more money.
On one of my trips, I came to the airport to take a bus to downtown, as usual. It was the same routine: get into the city, take the bus to the hotel, visit the customer, work late, take the bus back to the airport and fly back…That day, for some reasons, I decided to take the stairs down to a different exit, where I came across a beautiful garden I had never seen before. I waited there, enjoying the scenery. Finally, the bus came.
Usually, I always took the seat behind the driver. That day I sat down somewhere in the middle. A boy was seated next to me, carrying a lot of suitcases. Suddenly, he turned to me and gave me one of the most sincere smiles I had ever seen from a stranger. Warmly, he said, “Hi, the perfect day in the perfect place, huh?”
I remember thinking to myself: This must be one of those typical people who are young and naive (天真的) and just think everything is beautiful and easy. Why was he annoying me when I just wanted to enjoy the bus ride? But out of politeness, I replied, “Perfect! Did your parents pay for you to have some vacations on the beach?” “No, I’m not here for vacation, and I don’t have parents,” he shook his head. “I’m here because I want to achieve my biggest dream. I’m on the way to the army school where my grandfather studied a long time ago.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
“I lost my dad 10 years ago then my mum married again. My stepfather threw me out of the house. Since then, I’ve been living all over the country. I’ve met many people who were kind to me. And I’ve learnt a lot from life through these years,” he said softly. At that point I couldn’t say a word. I felt the tears coming. Fortunately, he continued talking.
Paragraph 2:
He smiled and told me that for 10 years, he had only one thing on his mind to join the army school like his grandfather. “My grandpa was a general of the army. He left me this,” he said proudly. He showed me a golden knife and said this was the best memory of his childhood. “The only thing I know is that I will follow my biggest dream and every day I will be happy.” Soon, the bus reached his stop. He stood up, took all his suitcases, and said goodbye with a big smile. From that day on, I always try to do everything with my best smile on my face.Unit 4核心素养测评卷

And I think that’s been my greatest lesson.”
( )24. What do we know about Joy Ryan?
A. She regretted not visiting the ocean.
B. She was financially challenged.
C. She prefers tropical landscapes.

( )28. What initially made Christiane Ritter consider joining her husband in the Arctic?
A. Her desire to explore new territories.
B. The need to escape the Austrian winter.
C. Her husband’s vivid descriptions of life there.
D. The opportunity to write a book about the region.
( )29. How did Christiane Ritter feel about Spitsbergen at first?
A. She viewed it as an awful place.
B. She was indifferent to its scenery.
C. She found it attractive and beautiful.
D. She was excited about building her home there.
( )30. What does the author think of Christiane Ritter’s book?
A. Moving.
B. Boring.
C. Attractive.
D. Complicated.
( )31. What kind of type is this text?
A. A guidebook.
B. An autobiography.
C. A news report.
D. A book review.
( )32. What is the problem with most tourists according to the author?
A. They don’t care about our planet at all.
B. They post too many photos on social media.
C. They can hardly find the right place to explore.
D. They fail to have a meaningful travelling experience.
( )33. What does the underlined part “taken a toll on” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Improved.
B. Damaged.
C. Saved.
D. Shaped.
( )34. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Tourists can hardly be affected by environmental awareness.
B. Tourists are unaware of the effect of their behaviour.
C. Tourists’ environmental awareness has been increased.
D. Tourists find it hard to travel without harming the environment.
( )35. Why does the author hope airline tickets will be more expensive?
A. To limit the development of tourism.
B. To create a sense of equality in society.
C. To help people value their travelling experience.
D. To make people less excited about travelling.

A few months later, in July, I found 60 (me) in Guilin. The moment I’d heard of its beauty, I’d been eager to visit. I boarded a bamboo raft on the Li River.
