As she rounded the corner from the front yard into the garage, Lauren saw her father, Alec, lying unconscious, pinned on his back beneath his car. The car had fallen off the jack while he was changing the brake pads on the right rear tire.Lauren yelled inside at her mother to call emergency services, and then ran to the car. “I think, I’m going to lose my dad,” she said. Unsure of what to do, she stuck both hands under the wheel hub where Alec had removed the tire and pulled up with all her strength. To her surprise, she lifted the car. Then she held it up with one arm and, with the other, pulled her father out from under the car by his pants leg.Alec wasn’t breathing, so Lauren, a lifeguard certified in CPR, began performing chest compressions. Within seconds, Alec took a breath and opened his eyes. “Stay with me,” Lauren whispered as they waited for the ambulance. “Just keep breathing.”Doctors treated Alec for five fractured ribs, a fractured sternum, and fractured vertebrae, but he was able to return to his job as an IT professional two months later. Lauren, now a computer engineer, says she didn’t stop to think. “Everyone has a basic instinct to help the ones they love,” she said.( )24. A Loving Daughter and a Lucky DadCIn many films, when the owner is in trouble, his or her beloved dog would run home to seek help without fail. Yet, while this image has become an unforgettable part of our pop culture, few people know that the same sort of response applied to service dogs.Once a blind man fell flat on his face, which was awful but finally harmless. His service dog, however, was trained to get an adult if the owner had a seizure (癫痫), and it was sure this was a seizure. However, while the dog did what it was taught, the woman it found was merely annoyed but not alarmed. Thankfully, the dog’s owner was not in the situation of a medical emergency. However, the experience inspired him to share this information on social media. “If a service dog without a person approaches you, it means the person is down and in need of help,” the owner explained. “Don’t get scared, don’t get annoyed, and follow the dog! If the first person doesn’t cooperate, it moves on.”Referring to the accident, a TV presenter asked a dog trainer, Olivia, some basic questions about service dogs, including how humans should react if an unaccompanied service dog approaches them.“What they’re going to do is sniff and gently push your leg,” the trainer explained, specifically noting that service dogs are not usually trained to jump or bark. “If you see a dog in a vest without a person around it, follow it.” When asked if one should say something to indicate they’re prepared to follow the dog, Olivia said there’s no clear command. “The spoken language is not going to be a secret password,” she said. “You can say, ‘What?’ or ‘Where?’ or just start walking wherever the dog leads.”Olivia concluded the TV show by adding that those who rely on service dogs can train their companion to move along to someone else, if the first person the dogs come upon reacts negatively to their request. Doing so could finally save the owner’s life.( )28. What do we know about service dogs?A. They can’t understand others’ spoken language.B. They often make people annoyed.C. They are seldom known by most people.D. They only exist in pop culture.( )29. In the owner’s emergency, a service dog will generally .A. run home for help from familiesB. ask the nearby person for helpC. jump or bark to draw humans’ noticeD. stay beside the owner until he or she recovers( )30. How should people react to a separate service dog?A. Follow it anywhere it leads.B. Communicate with it through commands.C. Keep it home until finding its owner.D. Take it to the nearest police station.( )31. What is the author’s purpose of sharing the story?A. To encourage everyone to help disabled people.B. To introduce a talk show about service dogs.C. To teach how to train service dogs well.D. To spread knowledge of dealing with service dogs.DBattling freezing temperatures, total darkness, and other dangerous flying conditions, a plane left the South Pole on Wednesday after rescuing a sick worker from a U.S. research base. After the patient and flight crew rest, the plane made its way to South America, where the patient received medical care. The daring rescue mission began last week when two planes flew from Canada to Rothera, a British base on the Antarctic Peninsula. On Tuesday, just one of the planes left Rothera on a 10-hour trip to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, where the sick worker was located. The station is usually unreachable during Antarctica’s long winter, from February to October. Forty-eight people live at the base, including a doctor and a physician’s assistant. But when the crew there determined the worker needed medical help that couldn’t be provided on site, the emergency rescue mission began.A small crew, including a pilot, co-pilot, medical worker, and flight engineer, made the 1,500-mile trip from Rothera in a Twin Otter plane. It is the only type of plane capable of flying in Antarctica’s winter cold. It can operate in temperatures as low as -103℉. The temperature in the South Pole on Tuesday was -73℉. In such conditions, an aircraft’s fuel and even its batteries need to be warmed up before it can take off.The pitch-black sky and the threat of high winds and sudden weather changes make such flights extremely risky and rare. This rescue is only the third time an emergency mission has been made to the research base since 1999. The National Science Foundation, which runs the station, has not said who was rescued, or the medical condition of the person. The names of the crew members who made the daring flight have not been made public either. But according to Peter West, a National Science Foundation spokesman, the mission “went all according to plan”.( )32. What do we know about the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station?A. That was a common scene frequently happening in our first week at college when we were all experiencing “forgot-this-or-that”. I had forgotten to bring snacks for late-night hunger. Some poor girl in the dorm had apparently forgotten bandages. We all felt a little displaced.Several months before, I sat at my high school graduation party admiring my gifts and battling waves of post-high school emotions. The usual and beloved inspirational books were lying in disorder around my feet, silently announcing the wealth of wisdom they wished to share. A small pile of personal checks lay nearby. Laundry items, desk supplies, sewing things—all well-intentioned and well-received. They would demonstrate their givers’ thoughtfulness over and over during my college career. But one gift struck me as strange. I frowned when I opened it. A first-aid kit? Inside it were a small packet of pills, pain-killers, creams, ointments (药膏), an insect sprayer (喷雾), a tape, pads of gauze (纱布)and bandages. Who would give that as a gift? “You’ll need that once you’re at school,” Mum pointed out. “You won’t have to chase down the campus nurse for every cough.” I shrugged at this thought. Not long after, in August, I packed my life into a borrowed lorry and slipped the first-aid kit in with my luggage. I barely thought about it once I reached campus, busy unpacking, book-buying, scheduling and meeting new friends. One day, I was peacefully sitting in my room, absorbed in preparing for my studies. The quiet atmosphere was suddenly broken by a sharp scream, “Anybody have a bandage? Emily got her arm burnt!” The voice echoed through the dormitory hall, instantly throwing residents into a state of confusion and alarm. Paragraph 1:I remembered my little first-aid kit.Paragraph 2:Years later, I received a party invitation from a young friend who was graduating from high school. ( B )1. What does the speaker ask the listeners to bring?A. A list of possible questions.B. A notebook with interview skills.C. An outline of their background.I’m really glad to see so many people signed up for this workshop. With graduation coming up soon, I know that many of you are preparing to enter the workforce for the first time. Job interviews can be an enormously stressful experience, but like most things, interviewing is a skill, not a talent, and a little practice goes a long way.I know many of you feel nervous just at the thought of being interviewed, but you need to remember that you’ve been invited for an interview because your potential employers think you’d be suitable for the job. So, have a little confidence in yourself. The best thing you can do is be prepared and professional, which will help you make a strong first impression. Before an interview, you should always review your résumé and application, which is why I asked you all to bring an outline of your achievements, academic or otherwise, up to now. You’ll be needing that later. Once your résumé is solid, then you can start preparing for possible interview questions. I’m going to hand out a list of those questions now. You need to think about how you’d answer each of them. Don’t bother making notes—you can’t bring notes to an interview. OK, that’s all, does anyone have any questions for me? AEmergencies can happen anytime, so being prepared for a home first-aid kit is important for your family. “Everyone has a basic instinct to help the ones they love,” she said. ( C )24. Doing so could finally save the owner’s life. ( C )28. What do we know about service dogs?A. But according to Peter West, a National Science Foundation spokesman, the mission “went all according to plan”. ( B )32. Following the lecture, students participated in hands-on workshops, practising their skills under the guidance of experts. This initiative not only equipped our students with valuable life-saving skills but also raised awareness of the importance of prompt first aid. The positive feedback from students showed the need for more such practical and informative events on campus. “Anybody have a bandage (绷带)?” a voice echoed down the dorm hallway. Paragraph 1:I remembered my little first-aid kit. Grabbing my package in no time, I stormed into the hall where I saw Emily sitting on the floor, her face contorted in pain, her arm reddened and swollen. Kneeling beside her and gently unwrapping the first-aid kit, I quickly yet carefully cleaned the burned area with antiseptic cream, applied a gauze pad to the burn, and secured it with a bandage. Emily’s eyes were filled with tears, but she still managed a grateful nod. “Thank you,” she whispered, her voice hoarse. “It’s okay,” I reassured her. Soon, many of the other girls heard about my little kit and paid me a visit for various needs. The little gift I had questioned now led me toward new friendships. As it treated diseases, it also broke the ice, allowing me to meet and befriend many in the dorm.Paragraph 2:Years later, I received a party invitation from a young friend who was graduating from high school. Eager as I was to attend her party, I was at a loss for what gift to prepare. Then like a bolt out of the blue, memories of my own party rushed back to me, and I smiled at the opportunity presenting itself. As I drove to the pharmacy, I knew exactly what gift I would give her: a first-aid kit. When I arrived at her party with the very gift for her, her eyes widened in surprise at it, exactly as what I did years ago. I smiled and explained the depth and meaning behind my choice. It was not just a first-aid kit but a chance to be a friend. Knowing the whole story, she took it and winked at me, “Yes, it is bandage for bonds.”
