The Four Most Exotic Black Sand Beaches
in the World
Papenoo Beach: Tahiti, French Polynesia
Popular with surfers, this remote black beach on Tahiti’s northern coast boasts some of the most impressive waves in the world. Here you will discover more breathtaking natural beauty of the island, with its green mountains and picturesque scenery. Not-to-be-missed sights include the spectacular waterfalls: Topatari, Puraha and Vaiharuru Waterfalls.

There is also an abundance of incredible marine and underwater life, so diving is a popular relaxation, but the main draw for beachgoers is spotting the playful bottle-nosed dolphins.
Stokksnes Beach: Iceland
One of Iceland’s most dramatic landscapes is the mountain Vestrahorn on the Stokksnes Peninsula in southeast Iceland. The magical setting here was featured in the Bollywood movie Dilwale. It’s a popular destination for photographers but surprisingly not a big tourist spot; this privately owned land charges a small fee to visit. You can visit the Stokksnes Beach on a group Ring Road tour or a self-driving circuit of the country.
Perissa Beach: Santorini, Greece
Situated in southeastern Santorini, this unique black beach boasts crystal clear waters and the rocky Mesa Vouno Mountain. For more active pursuits beyond sunbathing and swimming, visitors can rent water sports equipment for other fun activities like diving. You can also hike to the top of Mesa Vouno to visit the ancient ruins of the city of Thera.

When emergency workers arrive at an old firehouse in New York City, the way they greet each other is not what you might expect. These first responders say “ni hao!”, which means “hello” in Mandarin Chinese.
First responders are the first emergency workers to arrive at a fire, traffic accident or other emergencies. Some first responders are firefighters, while others can be emergency medical technicians.
In Brooklyn, New York, over 20 first responders are studying Mandarin Chinese for about two hours a week. The class is the first of its kind. It is offered by the New York City Fire Department Foundation.
The U.S. Census Bureau recently reported that some New York neighbourhoods are made up mostly of immigrants. Some people have predicted that the Chinese community is likely to become New York’s largest immigrant group. They think the city will have the largest Chinese community outside of Asia.
The Census Bureau also found that almost 200 languages are spoken in the city. So, knowing different languages is important, especially if you are a first responder.
Lieutenant (中尉) Steve Lee is the president of the Fire Department’s Phoenix Society. He says that first responders must be able to communicate quickly and effectively when an emergency happens. He explains that first responders enter neighbourhoods and communities to assist people regardless of where they are from. Many times first responders do not speak the same language as the people they are called for help. He adds that it is vital, or very important, that first responders are able to communicate with the people calling for help.
“Without help from homeowners and others,” Lee adds, “discovering exactly where a fire is burning can be a real problem. First responders need to ask questions such as ‘What building? What address? What apartment?’And the most important question, ‘Is there anybody left in the building and where?’”
( )24. Who are first responders according to Paragraph 2?
A. People first learning the disaster.
B. People leading the emergency rescue.
C. Rescuers first reaching the disaster.
D. People first finding the disaster.
( )25. Why are the first responders in New York studying the Chinese language?
A. To show respect to Chinese immigrants.
B. To learn about Chinese culture much better.
C. To meet the rapid growth of the Chinese population.
D. To find a better job in the Chinese community.
( )26. What do first responders concern most when a fire occurs?
A. The place where the fire occurs.
B. The people trapped in the fire.
C. The language to communicate.
D. The distance covered to the fire.
( )27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Mandarin Being a Must for Emergency Workers
B. New York’s Emergency Crews Learning Mandarin
C. Language Problem Disturbing First Responders’ Work
D. Importance of Languages Used in Emergency Rescue

In 2013, two years into her doctoral studies on forensic (法医的) jewellery, Maria Maclennan found herself in a hospital in Namibia, helping identify the victims of a plane crash that had killed everyone on board. It was the first time she had put her theoretical skills into practice, examining pieces of jewellery found in the ruins and using her knowledge of designs, materials and the industry to provide investigators with leads.
“Being a forensic jeweller is not really a job that actually exists,” Dr Maclennan, 35, said during a recent interview at her office in Edinburgh. “In some ways, it’s something I’ve made up and am still making up as I go.” Since then she has helped identify the victims of many catastrophes, including building collapses, natural disasters and terrorist attacks. And while the situations can be miserable—sometimes, she said, the jewellery was all but fused (熔合) into human remains—she has approached the job as a professional: “You’re wearing your forensic gloves and it’s all very methodical and detached (不带感情的) from the person, the human being.”
But there is a part of the process that she finds emotionally difficult. “It’s at the end, the returning, when you give the belongings back to the family, which really strikes me,” she said. “You look at the piece as a sort of a representation of the individual. Especially, I think, in the absence of the human body.”
Dr Maclennan now is a member of a disaster victim identification team for Blake Emergency Services, based in Cheshire, England. “Maria is the only one who does what she does,” said Carole Davenport, the archaeology manager at Blake. “She’s at the forefront of a field that she invented. She took the skills she learned as a jeweller and she applied this to the forensics world. Jewellery can be particular to areas, and there are certain unique things about jewellery that can help you almost read the life of a person. That’s what Maria does.”
( )28. What did Maclennan apply her jewellery knowledge to?
A. Furthering her doctoral studies.
B. Designing custom-made jewellery.
C. Recognising the identities of victims.
D. Reforming forensic jewellery industry.
( )29. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. What Maclennan does as a forensic jeweller.
B. When forensic jewelry came into existence.
C. Why Maclennan chose to be a forensic jeweller.
D. How forensic jewellers are viewed by the public.
( )30. How does Maclennan feel while returning victims’ belongings?
A. She is hardly affected as it is a routine for her.
B. She feels sorry for what she has done to the victims.
C. She is relieved that the process brings comfort to the victims’ families.
D. She feels sad as she has deep empathy for the victims’ families.
( )31. How does Davenport describe Maclennan in the last paragraph?
A. Firm and ambitious.
B. Innovative and competent.
C. Intelligent and generous.
D. Sensitive and responsible.

A new initiative by North American and European airports helps reduce stress for travellers with invisible disabilities such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, brain injuries, autism and mild cognitive impairment. Sunflower lanyards (挂绳) are issued to identify travellers with memory or sensory needs. Quiet rooms, noise-cancelling headphones and assistance by airline staff are all part of the programme at some airports.
First introduced at London’s Gatwick Airport in 2016, the discreet lanyards are available for passengers with invisible disabilities to help identify people who may need extra help or additional time to complete a task while travelling. How did it start? The Air Carrier Access Act, which was passed in 1986, specifically addresses airlines’ treatment of people with disabilities. Among the provisions are making it illegal to discriminate against travellers because of a disability and providing assistance with boarding, deplaning and making connecting flights.
Gatwick Airport created the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Programme. The purpose of the programme is to help people with hidden disabilities have confidence to travel independently, knowing that they will receive the support that they may need at every stage of their journey. From the terminal to boarding the flight, on the flight and arriving at their destination.
Since 2016 when the Sunflower was launched at Gatwick, thousands of businesses across a wide range of sectors have joined the global Sunflower network, ranging from retail and travel to tourism. Transport isn’t just limited to airports either, with railway networks, coach and bus services and ferries included. Education (universities, schools and colleges), healthcare, central and local government agencies use the Sunflower, as do football teams, theme parks, theatres and financial institutions.
Only 17 percent of people with a disability were born with it. For many that disability is not visible and develops at some point in their life. It’s the largest minority group in the world, and it’s one that any of us can join at any time. This represents 16 percent of the world’s population, or one in six of us. That figure is increasing due to a growing and ageing population combined with medical advances.
( )32. Who may benefit from the Sunflower Lanyard Programme?
A. Tom in a wheelchair.
B. Jerry suffering from brain damage.
C. David wearing reading glasses.
D. Jason communicating in sign language.
( )33. Why was the Sunflower Lanyard Programme set up?
A. To recognise travellers with invisible disabilities.
B. To relieve boredom for travellers with invisible disabilities.
C. To enhance invisibly disabled travellers’ courage to travel alone.
D. To reduce discrimination against travellers with invisible disabilities.
( )34. What can be concluded from the last two paragraphs?
A. People with disabilities are not a significant part of the world’s population.
B. The influence of the Sunflower lanyard is expanding.
C. An all-round training has been made available to travellers on airlines.
D. Medical advances have completely cured many people with disabilities.
( )35. Which section of a website does the text probably come from?
A. Society.
B. Art.
C. Economy.
D. Technology.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
In the heart of Daventry, five-year-old Oliver always cherishes tender moments with his mother, Codi Pow, who was a dedicated student nurse in the hospital in the town.
Codi has suffered from high blood pressure since a young age, and grapples with persistent health issues, which could easily trigger potential stroke or heart problems. She still remembers in the winter when her son was three years old, she got an unexpected tooth infection, which worsened dramatically, leaving her in hospital for a week. That tooth infection almost brought an end to her life.
As a student nurse, Codi navigates her daily routine with enormous care. She knows clearly that she should attend to herself well, taking pills on time, curbing her emotions, reducing the sodium intake, and so on. Her doctor’s repeated warnings echo in her mind, emphasising the need to avoid infection that could lead to severe complications (并发症).
Oliver lives a life no different from other kids in the neighbourhood, filled with playful activities, joyous singing, and the routine trips to kindergarten. What sets him apart is that he stands out for his unique passion: health and safety. During playtime, he eagerly absorbs himself in a toy first-aid kit and asks his mum about medical things. Oliver has collected a surprising amount of knowledge on health and safety, despite being just five.
One quiet Sunday morning, while preparing breakfast for Oliver, Codi felt it a bit difficult to breathe. She went to the hospital with chest pain, swelling in her neck and a lump in the same area. She had a blood test, chest X-ray and ECG before being sent home and advised to see her doctor later after she got the test reports.
By 1:30 in the afternoon, Codi was doing washing in the kitchen while chatting with Oliver when her condition drastically worsened. She felt a high fever, the sign of a possible infection. All of a sudden, she had a blackout, and her legs gave out. She fell onto the kitchen floor like a sack of sand.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
Witnessing his mother collapse in the kitchen, Oliver was horrified.

Codi was swiftly attended to by the medical professionals.阶段核心素养测评卷(二)

Dear fellow students,
With the winter vacation approaching, the Students’ Union plans to organise a training class on fire safety.
As scheduled, it will be given in the school lecture hall from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on 20 January. At the beginning of the class, a short film will be shown, helping us know more about firefighting knowledge. After that, an expert will give a lecture on how to self-rescue and survive in case of emergency. Then under his professional guidance, we will practise offering first aid to those who get injured.
By attending the class, not only will we master some basic and practical safety skills, but also we will raise our awareness of fire safety.
Whoever interested is welcomed to join us!

Paragraph 1:
Witnessing his mother collapse in the kitchen, Oliver was horrified. But instantly what he learned about health and safety flashed across his mind and contributed to his bravery and quick-thinking. He rushed to his mum’s side and took her phone, using his knowledge to call for help. He managed to dial 999, his young voice resolute and calm, bravely explaining the situation to the emergency responders. His little heart pounded with anxiety as he relayed the necessary details. Oliver also fetched a blanket for his mother. He held the phone steady to guide the paramedics to his mother’s side, displaying immense maturity far beyond his age.
Paragraph 2:
Codi was swiftly attended to by the medical professionals. They addressed the infection in her blood. Oliver’s quick response paved the way for her prompt medical intervention, ensuring that she received the timely care needed to alleviate her condition. Grateful for her son’s exceptional courage, Codi reflected on the importance of teaching children emergency procedures. Oliver’s bravery made her cherish every moment spent together as a family, leaving her immensely proud and reassured about whatever the future might hold. She beamed with pride, commending Oliver as her little hero.
