In order to help them enjoy their time here, the Students’ Union has decided to organise a European music week. It will be held the last week of September. You can sing pop songs and play musical instruments, so don’t forget to bring along your musical instrument if you have any. There will also be an interesting music contest. During the competition, the visiting students will sing the first sentence of a song and you will be required to guess where the song comes from and what’s the name of the song. Please come to the Students’ Union office to sign up before September 15th if you want to take part in any of the activities. The music week will be held in the garden to the left of the library. I hope all of you will have a great time. That’s all!

Carnival: One Day in Rio
Last year I went to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, and it blew my mind. It had been my dream to attend the famous carnival for many years, so I was excited. However, the moment I arrived, I was a little bit nervous because there were so many people on the streets. They say that five or six million people come to Rio during carnival time and about two million of them are on the streets on any given day. Luckily, I had a local guide, my sister’s friend Ronnie. He said he would take care of me and show me all the highlights. He did not let me down.
The carnival is most definitely all about the samba. It’s a style of music and dance which has its roots in Africa. Lots of Africans were forced to work as slave labour by the Portuguese when Brazil was being colonised (沦为殖民地), so this mixed culture of African, Latin and European styles is really strong here. Samba music is usually fast and exciting with a lot of drums and harmonic vocals (和声). It’s the kind of music that you can’t help dancing to. And I was learning that as I followed Ronnie through the crowd, my hips and shoulders were swinging (摇摆) almost in-voluntarily.
Ronnie had got us tickets for the samba parade—the symbol of Brazilian culture—inside the Sambadrome where the top samba schools compete for the championship, but we still had a long way to go through the street parties. He said most people enjoy the carnival by making their own parties in the street. About the samba parade, twelve main teams compete for the championship, and if they win, their performance will be talked about for years to come.
So, you must be wondering how it was. Well, I’m afraid I can’t tell you. Ronnie and I never made it into the Sambadrome. We spent the day moving from one street party to another. There were more snacks, more drinks and lots of dancing. Do I regret missing the main parade Not at all. I experienced the carnival like the locals, and it was truly amazing.

B. Foreign culture.
C. The busy schedule.
D. No local guide.
( D )25. What can we learn about samba from the passage

B. Its music is relaxing and soft.

A. she befriended some local people

C
Chinese New Year used to be a daylong celebration for us. My parents tried really hard to recreate the season for my sisters and me here in America. On New Year’s Day, my family, including all my uncles, aunts, and cousins, dressed in new clothes, gathered at my grandma’s house. Kids were taken out of school, and adults took the day off. The celebration lasted throughout the day and late into the night, with one tradition following another.
Fast-forward to 2019: My grandma has passed away, the adults are elderly, and the kids have grown up and are living their own lives. The Chinese New Year celebration is no longer as elaborate as it used to be. As we melt into American culture, the “olden ways”, as we call them, have fallen away. Life seems to have got busier and much more complex, but I often feel something is missing.
For us first-generation kids, it is often easier to let go of the traditions and customs of our parents. They don’t mean as much to us as they do to them. At the same time, they are still a part of our culture. I realised that the diaspora (流散) of young Asian Americans in the United States is not unique to me. It is an ongoing inner struggle that we all wrestle with. My Asian features and skin colour do not entirely define who I am. I am as much a “hamburger” guy as a “rice” individual. I can’t quite fully claim that I am an American and not fully Asian. There isn’t really a checkbox that I can mark. I am Chinese-Vietnamese-Asian-American.
I now have two little boys. It saddens me to think they will never be able to experience what my sisters and I did as little kids during this holiday. Recently, for the first time, I’ve hung up Chinese New Year decorations around the house and replaced our Christmas wreath (花环) on the front door with decorative firecrackers. In a way, my sons are forcing me to slow down and explore my heritage.
( B )28. What do we learn about the author’s family
A. They lived a very hard life in America.
B. They regarded the Chinese New Year as a very important celebration.
C. They once lost the tradition of honouring Chinese New Year.
D. They paid little attention to children’s education.
( A )29. What does the underlined word “elaborate” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Carefully prepared and organised.
B. Extremely simple and easy.
C. Unbelievable and sacred.
D. Expensive and fascinating.
( B )30. Why does the author mention “hamburger” and “rice” in Paragraph 3
A. To suggest meal choices.
B. To show multiple identities.
C. To admire different customs.
D. To compare personal tastes.
( C )31. What message does the author seem to deliver in the text
A. We should strengthen family bonds.
B. We are what we choose to be.
C. Passing down family traditions matters.
D. Knowing yourself is a lifelong process.
语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者对春节传统在家庭中逐渐淡化的感慨及对传承文化重要性的反思。
28. B 【解析】 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“On New Year’s Day, my family…dressed in new clothes…Kids were taken out of school, and adults took the day off. The celebration lasted throughout the day and late into the night, with one tradition following another.”可知,在春节的时候,作者一家人都会聚集在奶奶家,孩子大人都放假,庆祝活动一直持续到深夜。由此可知,作者的家人们非常重视春节,将其视为一个很重要的节日。
29. A 【解析】 词义猜测题。根据画线词前面的“Fast-forward to 2019: My grandma has passed away, the adults are elderly, and the kids have grown up and are living their own lives.”
根据第三段中的“My Asian features and skin colour do not entirely define who I am.”及“I can’t quite fully claim that I am an American and not fully Asian…I am Chinese-Vietnamese-Asian-American.”
D
The day after Thanksgiving is the start of the holiday shopping season. Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday, so the day after is a Friday. This day has come to be known as Black Friday. It has been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005.
Most stores offer great deals on Black Friday. They open their doors in the small hours of the morning. They try to attract shoppers with big discounts. Some items like TVs are much cheaper than usual. Stores may even lose money on these items. They hope that shoppers will buy gifts for other people while they are in the store.
Black Friday is a great time to get good deals. The problem is that there are not enough low-priced items to go around. Each store may only have a few. These items are in high demand. People stand in long lines to get such great deals. They may line up hours before a store opens. They may be hoping to get a low price for a TV or laptop, but not everyone who wants one will get one. Some people leave disappointed.
The situation can be tense. Some Black Friday events have been violent. Large, eager crowds have trampled workers. Fights have broken out over toys or people cutting in line. People have shot one another over parking spots. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun. Still, if you plan on going, expect large crowds and a bit of pushing and shoving.
So where does the name “Black Friday” come from It was first used in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The police called this day Black Friday because of the heavy traffic it drew. In the 1960s, it spread across the country. It seems that it is here to stay.
Now people all over the country take part in the event known as Black Friday. It is even spreading to other parts of the world. Stores have held Black Friday events in the UK, Australia, and Brazil since 2012. In Costa Rica, Black Friday is known as “Viernes Negro”. And in Mexico, stores offer an annual weekend of discounts, which they call “El Buen Fin”, meaning “the good weekend” in Spanish. I guess the language of savings is universal.
( C )32. Why do stores set prices so low on some items that they may lose money
A. They want people to enjoy the holidays.
B. They are generous at the beginning of the holiday season.
C. They hope people will buy other gifts while they are in the store.
D. They are trying to get rid of old items.
( D )33. Which of the following best con-cludes the main idea of Paragraph 3
A. People stand in long lines on Black Friday.
B. Black Friday is a really disappo-inting time of the year.
C. Black Friday is the best time of the year to get good deals.
D. Black Friday deals are limited and not everyone will get one.
( A )34. Which of the following best describes the overall structure of Paragraph 5
A. Order of time.
B. Problem and solution.
C. Order of importance.
D. Compare and contrast.
( C )35. What’t the best title of the passage
A. Black Friday: Stories from the Parking Lot
B. Black Friday: Why You Should Go This Year
C. Black Friday: The Stuff That You Should Know
D. Black Friday: How to Save Money on the Big Day

Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival at School
Last month, our school organised a series of activities to celebrate the traditional Chinese festival—the Dragon Boat Festival.
The event kicked off with a lecture about the origin of the festival and the relevant traditional stories. Subsequently, students participated in hands-on activities like making traditional rice dumplings (zong zi) and learning the basic skills for rowing a dragon boat. The highlight of the day was a dragon boat race, where students rowed enthusiastically in boats decorated with vivid dragon heads and tails. The competition not only brought joy but also impressed on us the importance of teamwork and perseverance.
The event served as a platform to promote awareness of traditional Chinese culture, enhancing our appreciation of the cultural heritage.
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Pumpkin carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and a sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage—I carried an 85-pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortun-ately, we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mum filming the annual event. I’m unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork (软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realised getting out was going to be less straight-forward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer.Dad was summoned less, it seemed, in expectation of practical help than to make sure he didn’t miss out on the spectacle. I heard him propose calling the fire department. “Stay tuned,” said Mum; she’d mentioned she was going to upload the video online, but it was only then that I realised she’d been filming the whole time. The video cuts before my rescue—Dad got me to push my head farther into the pumpkin so Mum could reach in and undo the rubber band round my ponytail (马尾辫). I emerged with squash-conditioned hair, a sore chin and my nose was plugged with pulp (果肉).
Paragraph 2:
The video was posted the Monday before Halloween.By the end of that day, it had over 1,000 views. People asked Mum to put it online, and by Wednesday morning we were getting 5:00 a.m. calls from TV breakfast shows and then the international media—the video started racking up hundreds of thousands of views. When I went on a youth camp, I was recognised by children I’d never met. The pumpkin also became a minor celebrity. Passersby and trick-or-treaters would knock and ask, “Which is Rachel’s pumpkin ” before taking selfies with it. Unit 1核心素养测评卷

( )28. What do we learn about the author’s family
A. They lived a very hard life in America.
B. They regarded the Chinese New Year as a very important celebration.
C. They once lost the tradition of honouring Chinese New Year.
D. They paid little attention to children’s education.
( )29. What does the underlined word “elaborate” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Carefully prepared and organised.
B. Extremely simple and easy.
C. Unbelievable and sacred.
D. Expensive and fascinating.
( )30. Why does the author mention “hamburger” and “rice” in Paragraph 3
A. To suggest meal choices.
B. To show multiple identities.
C. To admire different customs.
D. To compare personal tastes.
( )31. What message does the author seem to deliver in the text
A. We should strengthen family bonds.
B. We are what we choose to be.
C. Passing down family traditions matters.
D. Knowing yourself is a lifelong process.
( )32. Why do stores set prices so low on some items that they may lose money
A. They want people to enjoy the holidays.
B. They are generous at the beginning of the holiday season.
C. They hope people will buy other gifts while they are in the store.

( )33. Which of the following best con-cludes the main idea of Paragraph 3
