If you think about World Heritage Sites, you probably think of places connected with ancient art and culture, historical buildings and monuments. And of course, many of these are on the World Heritage List (WHL).But the WHL contains a lot of sites that are not so obvious.Let’s look at a few of them.
Robben Island in South Africa
This island was used through the centuries as a prison, a hospital and a military base. But it’s probably most famous as a maximum security prison for political prisoners in the twentieth century.Nelson Mandela was one of its most famous residents. The WHL says it represents “the victory of democracy (民主) and freedom over oppression and racism (种族主义)”.
The Border Area between France and Spain
This is an area of great natural beauty and the mountains have many interesting geological formations (地质构造).But it is also an area of small farms.People there still use a type of agriculture that used to be common in mountainous areas of Europe but has almost completely disappeared in modern times.
The City of Brasilia, Brazil
Brasilia is a capital city that was created from nothing in 1956.The WHL calls it “a landmark in the history of town planning”.The different areas of the city and the buildings themselves were all designed at the same time carefully.Every part of the city shows the ideas of the planners and architects.
Simien National Park, Ethiopia
Simien National Park was one of the first sites to be listed in 1978.It is one of the highest mountain areas in Africa, and the WHL calls it “one of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world”.It is also important for its wildlife. The population of some rare animals is getting smaller and smaller.

The Liangzhu Museum in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, houses a treasure trove(宝库) of jade, lacquerware (漆器) and numerous artifacts, but what has impressed Emma Chen, a volunteer coming from the United States, the most is its black pottery collection, which shows unique symbols that some scholars think are inscriptions (铭文) from another era.
Her passion for Chinese history happened before she was majoring in Oriental Studies. She learned Chinese during her college days in the US, and the interest ultimately drove her across the Pacific Ocean.Coming to China in early 2015 after graduating, she became a member of the museum’s volunteer team in 2022.Chen said her frequent visits to the museum led to them making an offer. However, being a bilingual volunteer guide is not without its share of challenges.Chen has read numerous books on Chinese history and visited many museums in China to overcome problems.
For Chen, Liangzhu Museum has become “a big family” that gives her a sense of belonging.“What fascinates me even more is that the museum itself is inclusive,” she said.“It opens its arms, welcoming everyone who comes here, regardless of their backgrounds.I hope everyone can walk into museums and get a glimpse of the rich and profound history behind the cultural relics.”
Chen has visited many museums in China, such as the Yinxu Museum in Henan Province and the Sanxingdui Museum in Sichuan Province. But in her eyes, Liangzhu Museum is a valuable treasure that cannot be replaced because she believes every word that is written on a wall in the hall of the museum, “Liangzhu is the most concrete proof of 5,000 years of Chinese civilisation”.In 2019, the Liangzhu ruins made it to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The government in China’s Gansu Province recently completed the building of a 3D database (数据库) to digitally map the Great Wall in order to ensure better protection. The database contains all the information collected through advanced technology and produces 3D images of the part of the Great Wall in Shandan County.
The sections of the Great Wall in Gansu stretch for 3,654 kilometres.Over the past few years, the Gansu provincial cultural heritage bureau has carried out more than 30 protection projects, using digital technology as a new method. The Shandan part stretches for over 200 kilometres, which was mostly built from the Han Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty. The part in Xiakou Village is the main part.“The Great Wall in Xiakou has weathered over a long period of time.It now appears to have cracking and other matters,” said Bai Yuzhang, a member of the Shandan cultural relic protection bureau, adding that other relics, such as ancient street buildings, have also suffered different degrees of damage.

Archaeologists may have found the location of an ancient Greek city, Kane. For more than 400 years, what happened to Kane has confused experts. The city, mentioned in many ancient texts, was on one of a group of three islands in the Aegean Sea. 36 Two of the islands, now known as the Garip Islands, are still there.
However, the third island, an important stopping point on ancient trade routes, no longer appeared on maps made after the 16th century. No one knew why.
Geo-archaeologists have helped solve the mystery. 37 New evidence suggests that this former island is a mainland peninsula (半岛) now. That’s almost completely surrounded by water.
38 At one time, a channel between two areas of land separated (分开) the island and the mainland.“The original channel was blocked out,” said Felix Pirson, the leader of the study. That means the space between the island and the mainland was filled with materials carried by running water. That’s how the peninsula formed.
39 For scientists, this suggests that the land there had formed somewhat recently, perhaps because of the earthquakes.
The scientists are looking forward to doing further testing. 40 They said that this could provide them with more information about the area during ancient times.“The aim is to reconstruct the ancient environment to understand history,” said Felix Pirson.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
  阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
As a child growing up in China, I was always fascinated by Kunqu, a traditional Chinese opera originated in the Ming Dynasty, also listed as the world’s intangible cultural heritage.I would often watch the traditional performances with awe, enchanted by the grace and elegance of the performers on stage.
Though I loved Kunqu, I never thought I could learn it, believing it was something only the most talented and experienced could master. However, one day, my friends invited me to attend a grand Kunqu performance in Suzhou, China, which really made me feel an urge to take on the challenge and learn it.
However, my journey learning Kunqu was not easy.I had to learn the basics of the ancient art form, from the complex techniques used to create the unique vocal style to the complex hand gestures that added a sense of elegance and grace to the movements. It was not just a matter of physical training; I needed to understand the rich history and cultural significance that Kunqu represented.
My first few lessons were rough and I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace of the class.I was disappointed that I couldn’t match the other classmates’ skill level, and I found myself feeling discouraged. However, with countless efforts and dedi-cation, I gradually saw improvements. My voice became stronger and more expressive, and my gestures flowed more naturally.I was fascinated by the subtle differences of the style, and began to develop a deeper appreciation for the beauty of Kunqu.
As I spent more time immersed in the world of Kunqu, I began to appreciate the depth of knowledge that went into each performance.Everything from the beautiful makeup and costumes to the props (道具) and music was carefully chosen to convey a particular mood or theme.I studied the classical texts that formed the basis of the Kunqu opera, from The Song of the Pipa Player to The Peony Pavilion, working hard to understand the distinction of language and meaning within each work.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
Soon, I began to perform in small shows with my fellow classmates. We would gather in a local community centre or theatre, dressing up in our brightly coloured costumes and applying our makeup with care.I loved the feeling of stepping onto the stage in front of an audience.Every time we performed, I felt like my whole world sort of melt away and I was completely immersing myself in such an amazing opera. My voice was delicate and smooth, my movements and gestures elegant and fluent. Finally, my wonderful performances earned myself a reputation as a rising star in the Kunqu community. What a great privilege to show that I was part of a centuries-old tradition that had entertained viewers for generations!
Paragraph 2:
However, as my reputation grew, I desperately desired to share it with more people.I started to look for opportunities to perform in a more public setting, volunteering at local festivals and cultural events.I spoke to audiences about the history of Kunqu and what it meant to me personally, hoping to inspire others to explore the art form for themselves. As I continued to spread the word about Kunqu, I found that my efforts were paying off.More and more people were becoming interested in this traditional Chinese art form, and I began receiving invitations to perform around the world.I travelled to cities in Europe, Asia, and North America, sharing the beauty of Kunqu with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.Unit 1核心素养测评卷

Tai chi can be practised anytime and anywhere without equipment. It is a practical way for one to further balance, motor control and rhythm of movement. However, for many, it is more than just exercise.“Tai chi is not just a sport to make people fit, but also contains Chinese culture and philosophy that can make people peaceful,” Yan Shuangjun, a researcher of tai chi, said.
Marleni Calcina from Peru is an example of the many people who have benefited from tai chi.She has practised tai chi for more than 10 years. For her, it’s a way of life.Tai chi has taught her the value of “going slowly”.She once felt great stress at work and in her life, but that began to change thanks to tai chi, which helped her “gain peace and inner harmony”.She said, “For me now, practising tai chi is like speaking with my soul.”

A.They said that the island didn’t disappear.
B.How did the island turn into a peninsula
C.The ancient city of Kane gave its name to the peninsula.
D.These islands were all located off the coast of modern-day Turkey.
