I switched to a flip phone. It vastly improved my life.I felt empty and frustrated at how much time I spent on my smartphone. So I spent the last five years steadily stripping my phone down to the basics.Social media was the first to go, then email, then news apps, and then even Internet browsers.
I long considered switching to a flip phone, but I always found an excuse to stay.Ultimately it was two of my students, 15- and 18-year-old sisters, who pushed me over the edge.Word spread around school that they had bought flip phones. If they were brave enough to take the plunge, I could, too.I spent $9 on a flip phone, plus $120 for a year of unlimited talk and text on a new number. For the last five months, I haven’t carried a smartphone with me, just my flip phone.
This is the charming, romantic side of owning a flip phone: more conversations, more eye contact, more connection. The separation between work and life is much more noticeable.I don’t overthink work emails all day, since I no longer carry my work email in my pocket.I am living more like my creative, curious, phone-free children.
This all sounds wonderful because it is wonderful. And now it’s confession time: I still have my smartphone. As it turns out, our addiction to smartphones is not just on an individual level.Intentionally or not, we have built structures that depend upon smartphone access, making it an essential feature of modern life. While most of the flip phone inconveniences are charming, some of them are so frustrating that they make you want to pull your hair out.
Despite that, I will continue to use a flip phone as my primary phone so I don’t have to carry a smartphone with me.And I will continue to evangelise (传播福音) for it.I hope many others get flip phones. We will all be better for it.If nothing else, it’ll be nice to have more people to talk to in the grocery line.

Being a relatively new technology, VR (虚拟现实) technology is clearly just beginning to take off. There are companies producing their own VR headsets, but they are still not as big as other products that are meant to entertain.Apart from the limited choices, one more thing that is worth noting about the current state of VR is the limited content and applications. Most of the products available on the market today are aimed at gamers and mostly special for high-end buyers because of its expensive price.
Despite being full of potential, however, there are also some challenges that should be dealt with.Among others, one of the most significant would be the need for powerful devices that would complement the headsets. For a most advanced all-in-one headset, for instance, a powerful video card is needed for a computer, something you might not have at home, making the VR technology inapplicable.
In addition, there are also challenges when it comes to beauty.Today’s VR headsets look almost entirely the same—they are huge and heavy, and they look silly.Producers must find a way in order to make the design more beautiful.
Producers will also be challenged to make VR headsets more affordable so that more people will be able to purchase them. Most of the models currently available are just too expensive for average buyers.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the challenge is to find more applications. It is currently being centred on game paste applications.Producers are challenged to come up with creative ways in order to increase the usefulness of such a promising device.
In summary, while it is undeniable that VR is big in today’s time, there’s a lot of room for improvement. There are also some problems that have yet to be solved and more opportunities to be uncovered. It would be safe to say that it is new, still in its infancy, but hopefully it is getting to the top.

This year researchers expect the world to snap 1.35 trillion photographs or about 3.7 billion per day.All those pixels (像素) take up a lot of room if they are stored on personal computers or phones, which is one reason why many people store their images in the cloud. But unlike a hard drive which can be encrypted (加密) to protect its data, cloud storage users have to trust that a tech platform will keep their private pictures safe. Now a team of computer scientists have developed a tool to encrypt images stored on many popular cloud services while allowing authorised users to browse and display their photographs as usual.
Malicious (恶意的) attempts to access or leak cloud-based photographs can expose personal information. In November 2019, for example, a bug in the popular photograph storage app mistakenly shared some users’ private videos with strangers.Security experts also worry about employees at cloud storage companies on purpose accessing users’ images.
So the researchers came up with a system called Easy Secure Photos (ESP), which they presented at a recent conference.“We wanted to see if we could make it possible to encrypt data while using existing services,” says computer scientist Jason Nieh, one of the developers of ESP.“Everyone wants to stay with their photograph storage app and not have to register on a new encrypted-image cloud storage service.”
To overcome this problem, they created a tool that preserves blocks of pixels but moves them around to effectively hide the photograph.First, ESP’s algorithm (算法) divides a photograph into three separate files, each one containing the image’s red, green or blue colour data. Then the system hides the pixel blocks around among these three files (allowing a block from the red file, for instance, to hide out in the green or blue ones). But the programme does nothing within the pixel blocks, where all the image processing happens. As a result, the files remain unchanged images but end up looking like grainy black-and-white ones to anyone who accesses them without the decryption (解密) key.

Four Ways to Make Online Research Easier
36 But all of the choices at your fingertips can seem difficult sometimes.Knowing how to evaluate and choose online resources can help you avoid headaches and wasting time.
Here are four ways to make researching online as easy and effective as possible:
Start at school.Ask your teachers or librarians which resources they’d recommend for your project. 37 In some cases, your school or teacher may have paid subscriptions to online journals or websites. These can give you information you wouldn’t get through a regular Internet search.
Sort fact from fiction. 38 Government sites ending in .gov and educational sites ending in .edu are usually safe.Established news-related sites are OK, too, but be sure that you’re using the original source. If a newspaper article mentions another source, like an organisation or website, go directly to that source to find the information.
Search smart. 39 Although search engines often do a good job of guessing what you need, you can use specific search methods to narrow down your results.Try alternative searches with different words and use advanced search to narrow your results.
40 When you’re ready to check out websites or go to search engines, log off your chat, and email (and turn off your phone). That way, you’re not tempted to get lost in the surf.Just a few clicks can take you far from your topic.
A.Stay focused.
B.Choose the best key words.
C.Finding what you need online is also a skill.
D.This way you can be sure the resources are accurate.
E.Start with an established search engine.
F.Going online to do research when you’re writing papers is easy.
G.Before you begin your research, choose the sites that are best for your topic.

No matter how old we are when they leave us, it can be a heartbreaking experience to lose one of our loved ones. Our memories are all that is left by them and happy reminders of their love turn into our most valuable treasures. That’s how Mara Soriano feels about the teddy bear that she tragically lost in her recent move to a new apartment.
Diagnosed with cancer, Mara Soriano’s mother, Marilyn, gave her daughter the bear as a gift in 2017.After Marilyn’s death in June, the gift became even more special to Mara.“That bear was basically the last reminder of my mum.It was her voice that accompanied me,” she said in an interview.
The plush (长毛绒制成的) toy didn’t cost a lot, but it contained a recording of her mother’s voice telling her that she loved her and was proud of her.The bear, called Mamabear, was in the backpack that contained electronics. When the bag was lost last week during the move, the 28-year-old was heartbroken—not for the gadgets (小装置), but for Mamabear.
Mara posted a photo of her and her Mamabear on social media, explaining the importance of the bear.Millions of people were touched by the story.More and more people were talking about the bear, but there was no good news for Mara.So again and again she posted online about the item and the story behind it, hoping it could catch more viewers’ attention in a big way.
A famous actor was moved by Mara’s story and then posted an appeal (请求) for Mamabear’s safe return.“I think we all need this bear to come home,” he wrote.Along with the message, he also offered a $5,000 reward to the people who found the bear.

A group of researchers and scientists from China and other countries have gathered to work on China’s Yungang Caves.Yungang Caves are located in Datong, Shanxi Province, which are a world cultural heritage site with a history that dates back to more than 1,500 years ago.But the caves are being damaged by climate changes, fires and earthquakes.Among them, climate changes cause the greatest damage. It is for this reason that a protection project has been started.Experts use digital technology to record and collect digital images of the Yungang Caves. Thanks to the digital technology, people in the future will be able to enjoy the caves even if they disappear. What’s more, it will allow the public to “visit” the caves more easily on the Internet, which means that visitors don’t have to travel to Datong to see them.

( A )32.What’s probably the main purpose for people to store images in the cloud
A.To save storage room.
B.To make photos beautiful.
C.To try a new storage way.
D.To keep their privacy safe.
( D )33.Why might employees in cloud storage companies be distrusted by experts
A.They sell users’ passwords.
B.They have invented new tools.
C.They often let out personal information.
D.They may steal a glance at users’ images.
( D )34.What’s the advantage of ESP
A.It can provide clear images.
B.It can decrease the upload time.
C.It can classify images automatically.
D.It can encrypt data on the original platform.
( B )35.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A.Method of decryption.
B.Image processing technique.
C.Separate files of images.
D.Data analysis of colours.

Dear students, the Internet can be a double-edged sword. If you use it correctly, it can do you a world of good. However, if you use it unwisely, it may destroy your life.
To stay safe online, you must know how to protect yourself.First of all, don’t post anything online that you wouldn’t want people in real life to see.Secondly, check your privacy and security settings on social media sites and keep them as private as possible.Make sure you know exactly who can see your posts.Last but not least, don’t ever post personal information like your home address, your ID number, your email address or your phone number on your social media.Always keep in mind that golden saying—better to be safe than sorry.
